Your Choice For 1961 Best Supporting Actor Oscar
spence replied to Det Jim McLeod's topic in General Discussions
Sadly, due to drugs & booze, Clift was such a total mess during that film, that of al; people *Tracy helped him remember his lines & gave him constant pep talks through out & then during it's Berlin premiere, all was going way-(except *Tracy almost died on the plan ride over there) Then during the screening Monty busted in & was yelling, shooting his fingers at invisible Indians, etc & then proceeded to jump on his back riding him like a cowboy, further injuring his kidneys A story I wrote about yrs back on here, but has been verified *Liz Taylor always really lived up on Bel-Air rd/drive,etc & was having a big party. But Clift went up stairs for awhile, at least! He got into her very powerful pain pills & proceeded to take the entire bottle-(only weighed about 135lbs too) eventually she pondered where he was & went up into her bedroom finding him not only completely passed out, but his cigarette had burned his finger down to the bone! Then there was that infamous auto accident while driving down from her mansion-(MOST KNOW THE REST) but all insist she saved his life During "The Misfits" MM told him he was the 1 person more.....up then she was -

For this viewer I would have voted for leading actor winner *Schell for support though. he was brilliant, but *Tracy was it's anchor & by far it's lead ^ though off these topic, *"The King of Hollywood: Gable"-=(l90l-60) was truly ROBBED of a 4th & posthumous nomination in "The Misfits" -
Robert 0sborne's own "The Osbos"-(2003) choices

AOW! I am totally surprised at these TCM-ITES on here & not one reply given about Robert's own *Academy Award winners??? Very bizarre (P.S. not that anyone will probably read or comment on this topic, but does anyone also have that book "Alternate Oscars?" It desperately needs an update though, ending with the '91 cinema) I guy named Larry Gelkbert also has a similar book, but small & calls his awards "Gelbert's Armchair Awards" -
Wagner now a "person of interest" in Natalie Wood's death

At least RJ did the right thing & more, he refused the press to even take a shot of her in death!!! & had Noguchi fired On that note, arguably the most disgusting & despicable photos I;ve ever as yet seen on the net is several shots of Sharon Tate & dead BIG TIME! -

In *Cagney's auto book he noted that they really picked on *Bogey, but when they even tried that jazz with him, he immediately slapped them down -

Leo Gorcey-(l9l5-69) was a well-known drunk & even Maltin mentioned he seemed very loaded in one of "BOWERY BOYS" efforts & Billy Halop was at first the leader i.e. 1937's "Dead End" (***1/2) but obviously he went elsewhere or something else Anyone else notice how fast Halop aged? -
I'll always remember when *Tracy was king of nommed actors, back when I first really fell "In Love" with THE MOVIES & then, it's history, because I really did not start going to lots of new releases until 1981/82.-(went to 53 for '82, not including going back to any either) a lot of my admiration & interest in *Tracy started on those grat 1970's tv talk shows Mike Douglas-(l925-206), Merv Griffin-(l925-2007) & more. & in particular Douglas-(*Spence was his lifelong idol) & it was even more of a rarity back then for Glendale's, "Forest Lawn" to allow people filming inside, but when they finally approached his garden grave (very top 318 acres) Mike said "Now, this is the one I most waited for" unquote But something else always ingrigued me, when he talked about Hollywoods Golden Age Heavyweight Legends, he would AWAYS say *Clark Gable, *Humphrey Bogart, *Gary Cooper and *"The Great: Spencer Tracy" or phrase them in another fashion, ALWAYS citing him last & with that nickname (P.S. & ironically 3 of those also chose GLENDALE) (P.,S. *"Marvelous Meryl Streep"-(l949-) obviously is poised to shatter all *Oscar records eventually)

Tried posting this last night, but the site deleted & or cut it off? (*-always denotes an Academy Award-(AMPAS) winner) Back in March of 2003 our dearly departed friend & TCM Host & Author: Robert 0sborne-(l932-2017) write of his own thing during the annual "31 Days of Oscar" & called them "The Osbos" meaning nommed films, etc that he thought deserved to win, as opposed to what Hollywood chose. Here they are 1. "Miracle of Morgan's Creek" (l944-Paramount) (should have won Best 0.Screenplay in his opinion) 2. "Cabin in the Sky" (l943) (deserved Best Song) 3. "Green Dolphin Street" (l947-MGM) (should have taken Best Scoring of a Dramatic Picture) 4. "A Star is Born" (l954-WB's) (Judy was robbed)-(MATCHED!) 5. "Royal Wedding" (l95l-M-G-M) (Best Song "Too Late Now") 6. "Blood and Sand" (l941-Fox)( (he thought it deserved C-Art-Direction Gold) 7. "Dodsworth" (l936-Goldwyn) ("Osbos" would have voted for this as BP) 8. "Random Harvest" (l942-MGM) (this was always among his favs & thought it shoulda' taken home Best Film) 9. "Camille" (l9347-Metro-Goldwyn-Mayter) (Garbo not winning of course & I agree 100%) 10th "Osbo" "The Human Comedy" (l943-MGM) (perfect WW2 Americana & he woulda' voted for "The Mick" Mickey Rooney) & 11th "Four Daughters" (l938-Warner Bros.) (always strongly felt John Garfield deserved that s. actor victory for this one)-(A MATCH WITH THIS FAN) FOR OFFICIAL WINNERS VS. HIS CHOICES GO CHECK 'EM OUT & POST IF YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE, PLEASE! Only wish he did the same each year afterward though? Pulled these from my files & hope to sometime post "THE OSBOS" VS. "THE ORACLES" yep, to quote legendary actor *Cooper. The latter ones are my own, title was won 2nd consecutive yrs back when Variety conducted annual predict the winners contests However, like "Alternate Oscars Book" by Danny Peary, my own choices didn't have to have been officially nominated that year THANK YOU!
-
welp, my friends the network/suite did it once again I had almost finished a pc lifted from my files dubbed R. Osborne's "OSBOS" During March 03's "31 Days of Oscar" but I got cut off, again? it was similiar to Danny Peary's book & my own "Alternate Oscars" Only difference being Robert's had to have been official contenders for that year & was pretty certain most on here would find his choices of great interest BUT, NOOOO IS THERE ANY WHERE TO STILL LOCATE THE ALMOST FINISHED POIECE?: I already complained, but that won't help THASNK1 YOU * BY THE WAY HE JKUST COVERED AN ENTIRE DAY ONHIS DESERVED PICKS & ABOUT #15 CATEGORIES, BUT FUIN JAZZ WHAT A DRAG!

But it did garner (8) nods Very last flm: 1984 tv movie as fmr boxer Joe Moran"Terrible Joe Moran"(***) co-staring pal & *Oscar victor *Art Carney-(won an EMMY foir it too!) & Ellen Barkin & fav. release: "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (l942-WB;s) & as all know his 1 & only Best Actor Academy Award (AMPAS) winner! Fred Astaire was always slated for this role first by WB's though? This was the type *Him loved the most & not playing gangsters, calling them "NO STRAIN!" His only (3) AMPAS nominations> 1938's superb WB's gangster fikm "Angels With Dirty Faces"-(won the NYFCC, but great friend *Tracy took home the Oscar istead for "Boys Town" MGM) AKA:"THE ORIGINAL ROCKY HERE TO!") 1942 *"Yahkee Doodole Dandy" during "The War" wnners were only given placques due to the WW11effort, but got regular statuette just afterward Same also went for (Jimmy Stewart, *Ginger Rogers, *Bing & *Barry Fitzgerald, etc & 155's "Love Me or Leave Me" (M-G-M) (3 & 1/2 stars!) he was upo foir Best Actr again, but Doris Day fans were truly mad whenshe was left out He portrayed Marty "The Gimp" Snyder A ga;lvanishing pc of workl by him, but lost thast yrarv for *"MARTY" &*E. Like so many shows, etc they played a ton more in the NYFC, NJ area Same went for both tv's "THE HONEYMOONERS"-(though for fellow fanatics easy to locate on youtube) But still "The Lost Episodfes" are hard to find I have 36 on video of "The Classic 39" & a ton of the others & TV's "The 0dd Couple" (l970-75) -

I'm fairly certain the studio Monogram is still-standing & with Raleigh is rumored to be most haunted -
Is this one about Curly Joe DeRita?
-
Saw this early *AMPAS sweeper several time-(anybody see the late 1970's tv movie remake with *Borgnine?) it s well-made (***) but nowhere on that superb level. & I've always felt King Vidor & M-G-M's 1925 WW1 epic silent was almost on same level, anyone agree? My "Alternate *OSCAR" winner for that year (1929/30)_ though is same

You know this, but it was *George C's, very first of only (4) nods that he desperately wanted to be removed/declined fort his s.actor turn in "Anatomy of a Murder" (l959-UI) Many yrs laterr * shortly before his 1999 demise, he said he was foolish for trying these though *Bogey always said the true & most asccurate fashion in which someone deserves to win is if they all played same role For the record *Hugh Griffith won over *Scott that yr for *"Ben-Hur" (***1/2) & of all it's victories to me *heston';s was among it's least deserving, TOO HAMMY! -

Skimpole, sorry to ask this buddy, but what exactly have you either been drinking or smoking;'? "Judgment..." is a superb courtroom epic & it's sole debit-(though always love him) is *Burt in that role written specifically for *0livier!? *Scofield woulda also been a finer choice. &Monty was a shell of his -(for real) fmr self,. likely adding to his incredible characterization! But for some rational that has always boggled pundits, historians *Chakiris defeated him that year??? Likely straight ticket voting & ironically, it was the fine Widmark that got the weakest notices for it though? -
Also 'Quick Millions" (l931-Fox)-(never ever shown on this station?), "A Man's Castle" (l933-Columbia)-(though not really a gangster in the powerful depression era drama) (***1/2) "Whipsaw" (l935-MGM) (***)

Roger Ebert-(l942-2013) & Gee Siskel-(l946-99) would always secstars from "The Golden Age" were ever so different, confident & better at their game & often mentioned just how the likes of both *CAGNEY & *TRACY would do entire sequences with their own back to the camera! Something we rarely,m if ever will see today with the current crop of so called heavyweight performers THANX AGAIN & WIULL SOIME SMART TCM-ITE PLEASE CITE *TRACY'S GANGSTER ROLES??? It's an easy one & only about 4 to 5 at most? OK, one hint & it wasn't in friont of the cameras, but should have easily been in the 19390 film version instead of dullard Preston Foster? "THE LAST MILE" on the NYC stage first & foremost & *Ford attended almost weekly & immediately signed him to Fox Studios & the rest was history & "TheMick" Mickey Rooney portrayed Killer Mears in the ok (**1/2) version of same name(l959) NOW,. what re the others???
-
Still think it's a good (***) at best crime-drama though. Apparently she disliked *Tracy & was always later quoted as saying "Apparently *Spencer Tracy thinks he has a license to feel" unquote &they never worked together again He grew out of that 1930's ladies thing though, maybe his ever decreasing health had a lot to do with it, pkus he was incredibally manic depressive & his polo-playing buddies *Disney, Leslie Howard & Will Rogers all went in plane crashes, except of course *"Uncle Walt" (P.S. & I have gotten ever so fed-up with idiots out there-(same nitwits that speak of John Dillinger's you know what?_) & that *Walter (Elias) Disney-(l90l-66) was chrogenically frozen. His ashes-(along with a myriad of his family) are just on opposite side of "Freedom Maus." Veeery top of Glendale's "F. Lawn" (318 acres & the VIEW!!!) Fansare more than welcome inside this 1/2 the size as "Great Maus." inside though. & ironically, *Tracy's garden grave is just on opposiute suide & under huge statue of George Washingtyon!
-
Often wandered if *Cagney was at all hurt, when the real George M. Cohan-(l878-l942) said this of *"TheGreat: Tracy" *Spencer Tracy, Your the Best Damn actor I ever Saw" unquote & YHOUGH A BIT OFF THE TOPIC, (on Dick Cavett-(SURE HOPE THEY WOUILD COME TO THEIR SENSES & HIURE CAVETT AS A HOST!) *Kate immediatelly mentioned this faxct)THINK I ASSKED THIS OF YOU FELLAS & GALS BEFORE *TRACY ALKSO STARTED OUT PLASYING GANGSTERS, WHAT WERE THEY???
