Now you fols gotta' give a comparison shot to a few other Hollywood Gangsters, such as "Little Ceasar" vs' "The Public Enemy" & others! AKA: Enrico Bandillo Rizzo vs. Tom Powers (P.S. Someone awhile ago posted a string pc about *Muni's-(said to be a jerk though!) Hawks & Hughes 1932 masterpiece "SCARFACE: SHAME OF A NATION" & once again as V. Mayo often said about them during that that era never given a major *Oscar to a gangster picture! It was so hated then not even a screenplay shot was garnered? (EXANPLE: try & name the 1st leading actor or even actress to score for that typ[e of role???) & it's 100% accurate that Al "Scarface" Capone=-(l899-l947) himself even owned a coipy of "Scarface...," something said to not be legal back then, but they neverstopped him of course dd it? _

Why TCM Runs The Same Films Over And Over?
spence replied to film archivist's topic in General Discussions
Simply because they are running out of ideas! How many spins can they do on the same classics, no master how all-timer they are? -

Thios incredibal TCM-ITE! May have alrerady given up on being in that seemingly superb fans club "TCK BACKLOT" I'm not wealhty & it costs $87 per year to even be involved in their club It's mgr at first was adamant it was $87 per month though? Though unlike todays current era he firmly did apologize for that big error! But it's TCM Backlot is rather vague & even more-so online in the in betweens So rush over to it'sown TCM section for more details Did still get a complimentary box containing lots of cool jazz though! & you'd think by now 2 items that the network has still dropped the ball on is it's own regular site POSTER!? After all is (20187) 24yrs late in doing one? 2ndly & unlike almost every single other movie related website TCM has styli-(STRAHGELY@!) mt even conducted a "NO BRAUINER" & had our fns overall poll & survey of all-timers in THE MOVIES"??? Was barely able to go to the local Winn-Dixie a few hrs ago & upon waiting for my mahd, I had to call a taxi as usual thesedays-(lost our car around 2012) & some lady I never even knew just started jawing with me about the dvd'sthe store has up frt at the counter & I mentioned-(due to upcoming *&Oscars I reckon;) 1985's 7 time *Academy Aard Sweeping: *"OUT OF AFRICA" ($87m.) & I always rated it a strong (***1/2 stars) (FOR THOSE THAT MAY NOT BE AWARE IT WON BP & 6 MORE OVER THE LIKES OF "The Color Purple"-(which went 0 for 11), "Prizzi;'s Honor" "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" & "Witness")-(but my personal top five favs for '85 were> "Shoah" "Ran" "Purole Rose of Cairo" "Runaway Train" & *"Out of Africa") Back to the very nice pt of this woman of whom I'll probably never see again either She just blurted out "Hell, I'll Buy it For Ya' unquote & did!

No matter how long this moviebuff lives, I will always find it truly despicable that Baskett was only given a special statue vs him being up for s. actor instead??? Another bit of hypocrisy is that HOLLYWOOD still feel it ok to vote "Song of the South"(l947)- A strong**1/2) Best song though GO FIGURE? Now even the all-time & legendary likes of what is officially thee highest grossing motion picture ever made 1939's *"GWTW" is starting top suffer the same fate? Even the glorious ""Tampa Theatre" down here publicly commented it now refuses to EVER book *Selznick's epic!? Topper is they & many of us our actually listening to college punks (NOTE: above $$$ & *"GWTW" figure is first due to the list adjusted for inflation) & the PC left to begin with, who haven't even lived, or I dare say haven't even seen these heavyweights 1at saw the *:GONE WUTH THE WIND" item a cxopuple weeks ago & now "Farenheit 451" is also on the ever growing listy? NEXT BURNING BOOKS!

Overall star rating (***1/2out of 4) & it's song was snubbed of an AMPAS nominaton all the way! Winner that yr "Talk to the Animals" from "Dr. Dolittle" Plus, he was vioted hby NATO as the no. 1 annual $Box-0ffice Champion for 1968 WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO HIM THOUGH? I KNOW HE'S WAY UP THERE AT AGE 91, BUT SO IOS HARRY BELAONTE? "Essential *Poitier"(only 4 allowed like tcm "Guest Programmers") 1st choice "In the Heat of the Night" (l967) swept 5Academy Aards him was not or leading actor that year, or for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" & *Steiger handedly won 2nd "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (NOTE: in the superb 1986/87 *"Spencer Tracy: Legacy" he was amonmg a myriad of interviews & said *Sencewas very ill, but when he did show up, he was ion force as an actor unquote 3rd pick "The Defiant 0nes" (l958-UA) (many insist that both he & Curtis delivered the performances of their lives in this classic) & 4th GP selection would be "Raisin' In the Sun" (l96l-UA) (as Maltin saysrguably his finest performance!) (ALSO-RAN:1958's ultra tough by Budd Schulberg'_(*"0n the Waterfront" & more) account & on the docks again. Heavy drama betweenhe close friendship of him & Cassavettes. But it's Jack warden whom steals the show as the heavy) & I've always liked his 1963 *Oscar winning "Liies of the Field" (***-UA), but it was more quaint, then many of his others? He actually upset *Newman in & as "Hud" for that "Golen Boy" that *Oscar year THANK YOU

Several yrs back during TCM's "Summer Under the Stars" & esewhere, all listed Flynn as being 6'3 easily (P.S. a pal o'mine since 1982 & more than a huge movioebuff, always vited for the crazy Errol as his favorite actor of all-time! His runners-up Tyrone Power & that jerk ^ also quite hammy *Heston & yp fill out Frank's fasv resume *"Ben-Hur": *"Lawrence..." "Adventures of Robin Hood" Maginificent Seven" & "The Big Country" his top films! Sadly, that man may know have already went away though A lifelong diabetic, which turned into Alzheimers He'd now only be age 72! Frankie' Boy, collected sooo many vhs tapes & lived with his madre, he had to actually kept all in a storage bin??? & ;ike myself he often got to see what was left on HOLLYWOOD, but always full of jealousy, said I had a far superior location very near PARAMOUNT/RKO THANK YOU (P.S. Flynn, a limited actor, deserved a s. actor shot at least once for Hemingway's '57 "Sun Also Rises" and was able to finally see & phograph his verym, very modest final resting place VEEERY TOP of Glendale's "F. Lawn" in late & earlier in same year. Ironically, his grave-(he was so busted his fan club "THE ZACCA" finally installed it yrs later!) But, the irony being is Flynn's is along very same wall &only about 45ft from my own A #1 *"The Great: Spencer Tracy's" family garden grave. If ever visit, ask for Washington statue & both are nearby. BUT, if you smartly=-(vs my debut trip where I forged all the way up the mountainous 418 acres, like Major Rodgers or his "Stanley & LIvingstone" or something) take either your rental car-(couldn't $afford% such a thing me self though) or a cab, watch for your ears to POP! Due to altitude -

Your Choice For 1961 Best Supporting Actor Oscar
spence replied to Det Jim McLeod's topic in General Discussions
To sewhiute2000, have you ever seen the real "Minnesotta Fats" playing pool? Welp, "The Great 0ne: Jackie Gleason's" take on it was a 180. Calm, cool & as a book says massively deceptive in that role. & unlike *Paul it's true did his own shots. (NOTE: For Ralph Kramden fans a stunningly bad (*1/2 at best) from '68 he made was "Skidoo" Even having Groucho as a little angel or something running awround him in it! & he truly deserved a 2nd s. actor shot for the still rarely heard of 1986 "Nothing In Common" ($16m.) (***1/2) opposite *Tom Hanks. Plus, among our fav TCM-ITE ladies *Eva Marie Saint, now 94 also on hand. Garry Marshall helmed that nice but sad comedy-drama WATCH FOR IT! (P.S. Who remembers pool championships being on ABC Sports "Wide World of Sports" mostly in the 1970's? & Willie Mosconi would always defeat Fats too! -
Your Choice For 1961 Best Supporting Actor Oscar
spence replied to Det Jim McLeod's topic in General Discussions
AGREED 100% Clift was more than brilliant in "Nuremberg" however, how much was his true self vs that torn character? I've heard messages on the phone between him & his brother the next yr & Monty was more then excited that he would not only earn what woulda' been his 5th shot, but even "Walk Down-the-Aisle" for *Huston;s very strong (***1/2) bio "Freud" Neither happened though In retrospect nowadays it's amazing "THE MISFITS" even got finished to begin with, what with MM being incredibally late each and every day Many insist *"The King" tried to kill time waiting for her by playing rough house with those Horses-(he also was so happy about doping this pic he went from 237 to 195lbs & FAST! & of course both he, Clift & *Huston got loaded much of the time, having then nada to do with Marilyn though this time out. She hated this role though & Arthur Miller-(l9l5-2005) for scripting her such a role as another misfit. It was just after, I think they divorced & DiMaggio was her true hero in the end. Eli Wallach seemed to just stay the coarse though.(TRIVCIAL this utterly depressing, yet powerful film was a first on many accounts for *Clark. His biggest salary at over $750.000 & he truly thought he would win Best actor again, but was robbed of a 4th nomination though woulda' been (posthumously) of course. & Marilyn always admired him since being a little girl & when she had more than an awful childhood, she'd like to dream & pretend he was her real father! His untimely death also destroyed her, not only her,but the media claimed she killed *"The King of Hollywood" by him having to wait ever so long until she finally arrived on the set daily. I never believed this, *Gable lived a hard life & knew it. & along with certain sections of MGM's 1957's "Raintree County" (M-G-M) (***) was the 2st time vewers can easily see Monty's face disfigured from that '56 car accident in Bel-Air Malti says on either it's indoor sequences or outdoor one's, you can see how the filmmakers desperately tried to hide 1 profile. His very last was the flat/mediocre (**) 1966 "The Defector" (P.S. YOU BE THE JUDGE HERE THE OFFICIAL BEST ACTOR OSCAR NOIMINEES FOR 19861 & DID *GABLE BELONG? *Maximlian Schell in "Judgment at Nuremberg" (won), Spencer Tracy in "Nuremberg"-& unlike *Schell, was it's anchor though, Charles Boyer in "Fanny" Paul Newman in :"The Hustler" & Stuart Whitman, "The Mark" & remember also that yr was *Cagney's stunningly comedic work in "0ne, Two, Three") -
May have written this pt before, just in case when on the Warner Bros. VIP tour-=(it's just a fancy handle & your not treated as any VIP though) However, my 1 trip to the Burbank Studio-(again, finest tour left in all of Tinsel-Town) but it helps if you are a classic cinema fan. My pal Ron, now 57 is not very much into that era so did not love it as much as this fan did. (TRIVIA: Original Warners used to be located in mid Hollywood, now for yrs KTLA TV. Many classics were still filmed at that fmr locale though, including "P. Enemy" Then they moved up to Burbank where the vast majority of studios are located.) & as I've noted many times it's museum is to me woirth price of admission. back then it was different though (November 1999) in which it's focus was memorabilia, costumes-NATALIE'S clothes from "Rebel..." "Great Race" "Gypsy" were on display, among many other jazz in this museum Even had miniature submarine & more from her "GR"BUT, now when I look it up it's about 85 to 90% "DK" cars & memorabilia? Among items most stood out was a very, very elderly guard that worked there since the 1930;'s & there are great monitors everywhere in this place, showing footage of *"Casablanca" "Public Enemy" "M. Falcon" "Treasure Sierra Madre" "Key Largo" "Splendor in the Grass" & many more & I told my pal *Cagney himself in most interviews said they used actual bullets during the earliest days. Welp, this old guard butted in & said they used "Scribbs" instead. But before the museum 2nd floor, another somewhat older gent said he knew Edward G. & others & kibda' liked him, see besides Edward G., really being a milqtoast he was also widely known as being rather snobby. I had to keep up with fans opn our tour cart, but wanted to ask if he ever met NATALIE, *CAGNEY & maybe even *BOGFEY-(though he died many yrs prior) They did have *"Casablana's" legendary piano though. Much other things were under glass, of course "The Falcon" like Dorothy's Ruby Slippers turns up all over the world though? FOMNASL NOTE: Kida sadly there was a huge rm in museum dedicated to TV's David Wolper, not 1 sole even went inside) Like Debbie Reynolds literally nagged scum Kirk Kirkorian about saving all 200 acres of M-G-M & typically,. he was nmo moviefan & said NO to her, she did purchase lots from his Metro-Goldwyn-Matyer auction in 1969/71 Trying to tell this....MGM could be another "Disneyland" Sadly, after taking her auction things to her Vegas show it & she BOMBED though THANK YOU

(*-0indicates AMPAS winner) & Margaret Wycherly was hust 13yrs his senior. Once a Golden Boy contender for Hawks & *Coop's classic WW1 drama "Sergeant York" (WB) (3 & 1/2) The legendary & heroic *Gary Cooper's 1st Best Actor win (TRIVIA: "The Master" *John Ford for 1941 Oscars, wanted his name & pic *"How Green Was My Valley" (Fox) removed from competition because he strongly felt "York" was the far greater film. But I disagree with the all-time *Oscar champ as BD-(4 wins & 2 more for his WW2 docu's) *Jack "Pappy" Ford probably rated *Coop's bio stroinger due to it being more Americana & his absolutely magnificent Wales epic *"Valley" isn''t among my top 5 biggest *Oscar snubs over "KANE" My reason, *0rson's #1 greatest motion picture yet produced did at least lose to another masterpiece that year!!! (TRIVIA: while majority of filmmakers & without pause almost always vote for "Kane"-(though more recently Hitch's '58 masterpiece "VERTIGO" upset it as A #1 ever in Sight and Sound Survey-(2012) the legendary 4 time *AMPAS victor *Eastwood has always chose *Ford's *"Valley" as his all-timer! Back to Cody's ma' though, she was also robbed of a s. actress shot for "WH" It's sole nod & co written by a female was it's script??? *Jim-(hated *Jimmy) made Codsy insane because to him it was just another hackjack job & his pat answer on playing hoodlums "No Strain" unquote TRIVIA: "HE IS THE BLOOD OF MY HEART" unquote
