I found Dunkirk boring, so I would disagree with EW.  I haven't read any of those so-called entertainment magazines for years.  I may read the front of the magazines in the checkout line at the grocery store, but that's it.  Like Lawrence, I was turned off by the tabloid nature of these publications.  I don't need updates about the Jenner/Kardashian "klan" constantly.  Random people that are on The Bachelor, Real Housewives of Wherever, Dance Moms, Survivor... whatever other "reality" shows that are out there that exist that I don't watch, are not stars.  I don't need updates on where they ate lunch or whose baby they're having or anything else of that ilk.

The only thing that EW does that I like are their annual reunion photoshoots.  Those are fun.  Other than that, I have no use for them. I get all the tabloid "news" I need reading the fronts of the National Enqurier, Star, The Globe and National Examiner.  The one tabloid whose "news" I really miss is The Weekly World News.  As a kid, those headlines were hilarious and always worth the trip to the grocery store with my parents.

But be certain it & "Shape of Water" d the field with the most overall nominations come Tuesday January 23rd., 2018

& even if "Dunkirk" doesn't take home the biggie for Best Film, it's already a lock to win for Best Sound Mixing, Sound Effects, Film Editing & maybe it's score by past winner *Hans Zimmer & Hollywood is dying to recognize for the first time to date Christopher Nolan

If I were among the approx 8,467 voters I'd easily cast my ballot for "Three Billboards..." however I am still seeing "Darkest Hour" "The Post" & maybe "Shape of Water"   It was the first new releasew I'd give 4 stars to in a year with "La La Land" ($155m.)

    THANK YOU!

I canceled my subscription to EW many years ago when it became a trashy, tabloid-y clone of People and US Weekly, and they fired everyone on their staff who was over 30.

AGREED 100%   But back then it was the only game in town & L. Maltin as you know started on tv there as well  although at first I didn't like the way he graded flix on the 0 to 10 system

TMZ is sooo obnoxious!  Not the TMZ Live show, but the asinine one whjere all think they are so funny?

Uh, EW isn't a "so-called" tabloid.  It's not what it gloriously was in the 90's, but whatever happened to it, it's still probably THE best default movie/TV/culture magazine out there for focusing on hit-culture, while every other "celebrity" magazine (including the late lamented TV Guide :( ) is more interested in stocking cult-of-personality to keep agents happy and binge audiences strung out and exploitable.

When I see "Summer Preview" or "Fall Preview" at the stands, that's not just an event, it's a reference guide.  Now shaddup and quit shouting at clouds.

as I wrote many times, I only think "Dunkirk" a good at best release (***-out of 4 stars)

Do you remember the tremendous "Premiere magazine?"   Despite it going under in 2002 I still saved quite a number of those issues.   Something I rarely do with my EW mags,. except the special issues & recall "Films of the Golden Age"/"Classic Images?" I still; saved some of them.

EW also-(like TCM) to conduct another in depth suvey of readers all-timers

LawrenceA, do you have an idea as to why our favorite website & network TCM seems to refuse to conduct a fans favorite's p[oll???

  3. To date "Star wars: The Last Jedi" (**1/2) has domestically sold $446m. in tickets, but it looks as though it will not get close to the better (***1/2) "Force Awakens"   though it will positively make it into the all-time top ten

1st place "SW: Force Awakens" ($936 million)

      2nd "Avatar" ($760m.)

3rd *"Titanic" ($670m.)-(NOTE: Even more to it's credit, they couldn't show the long epic as much)

4th "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" ($653m.)

      5th place "Avengers" ($623m.)

      6th "he Dark Knight" ($535m.)

      7th "Rogue 0ne: A Star Wars Story" ($535m.)

      8th "Beauty and the Beast" (2017) ($502m.)

      9th "Finding, Dory" ($486m.)

& 10th place td "Star Wars" ($461 million)

BUT, adjusted for inflation the legendary *GWTW" has sold over $1.6 billion in tickets!  It cost 23 cents back then in '39

First I"m very surprised to see James Stewart or James Cagney listed (and trust me I love those named James!).

I'll give my wife's picks;  Gary Grant,  Tyrone Power,  Errol Flynn,  Gregory Peck,   Robert Taylor.

Since our friend James-(with one of the best avatar's by the way!) also cited his wife's pix, I'll include my ex-wife's  Antonio Banderas & my mother too-(*Kevin Costner, but of all-time she just loved ELVIS the most)

  5. & for those like a pal o'mine, Jakeem covers all the years awards & such   Here is Entertainment Weekly's other 9

    favourite releases

2nd "Call Me By Your Name"

    3rd "The Shape of Water"

    4th "Get 0ut"

5th fav of it's editors "Foxtrot"

    6th "Hostiles"

    7th "LadyBird"

    8th "Molly's Game"

    9th "Faces Places"

    & 10th "Wonder Woman"

NO "Three Billboards..,." "Darkest Hour" "Phantom Thread" & others???

  6.  Personally I think "Dunkirk" is a fine war-picture (***-out of 4 stars) & has strangely,. considering no big stars, made $200m. domestically alone!   It's certainly no "Pvt. Ryan" or "Thin Red Line" though & I think last yrs *Oscar victor for editing & Sound *Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge" was a bit better myself   But, as the 101yr old *0livia de Havilland's movie says "To Each His 0wn" I reckon' so

Like most things unfortunately in our current era EW is also now very PC    I miss "Premiere"

    YOWZA!!!

EXCELLENT SHOT PAL     THANKS!   & how many beautiful actresses in that era would shoot entire sequences in her undies?

They talk about child actors not succeeding into the adult cinema, but she obviously made it   Dean at first didn't want her in "Rebel...," neither did Nicholas Ray because they still thought her a child star

WB's publicity always tried to say she was 5'3 when in reality she was barely 5'0

  8. Marvelous images!  *"The Duke" was not only his fav. actor, but his idol!    Too bad they never worked together though.   TO YOU FELLOW TCM-ITES, JUST FOR FUN, WHAT FILM COULD THEY HAVE DONE TOGETHER BY THE WAY?

Steve was 5'9 at best & *JW 6'4 & 1/2, but sadly for him, his tiny feet (5 & 1/2) made him 4-F for WW2

One of Hollywood's best looking leading men, THE KING HIMSELF!

    f6abb2d215c736c21b6b953cd2f71a10.jpg

    Clark Gable.

Oops, guess I could have picked a better photo to prove my point.

    Clark_Gable_1938.jpg?fit=529,671&resize=

    Ah, there we go!

He was "The King" of an empire called Hollywood & was even officially voted that title by over 20 million moviefans in a 1938 poll!

His first wife had his teeth fixed though   A truck driver before Hollywood

Though many leading ladies-=(i.e. *Vivien Leigh) complained of his bad breath, his teeth were always a nightmare for him

Many books say *Gable was Valentino in Jack Dempsey's body

(P.S. Hollywood & the *Academy should still be ashamed of themselves for not even nominating him a 4th time for his greatest work as an actor in "The Misfits"-(posthumously of course)

Well it's "soytenly" a better shot of Bugs than the previous one anyway!

    ;)

Possibly my all-time favorite WB's cartoon short & otherwise is the one with all the heavyweight stars of the Studio-System   I forget it's name right now, have it online somewhere & used to video tape it constantly?

Some of the top attractive actors today are Brad Pitt, Leonardo DeCaprio, Ben Affleck, Steve McQueen.

Classic actors would be Clark Gable, James Stewart, Robert Taylor, Gary Cooper.

"The King of Movie Cool: Steve McQueen"-(l930-80) was my very first hero/idol as a wee-lad of about agers 9 to 15!  Plus, if course during the early to mid 1970's Evel Knievel

Matter of fact back then they had few & far between movie mags except Rona Barrett-(YUK!) But I would always search for shots of McQueen

Neat how you devided era's up

1 mistake Steve is a classic actor

  12. OOPS, I neglected to include Frank Morgan-(l890-l949) he'd be my 4th fav character player

& many may not know he was one of the legendary Hollywoods Irish Mafia

*Tracy, *Cagney, Pat 0'Brien, Frank McHugh, Robert Armstrong, Lynn 0vermann-(I think?) Ralph Bellamy, Morgan & for some reason Boris Karloff

They used to gather every Tuesday

There is the great Donald Crisp who worked among many fantastic actors including Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few. He always made a movie worth watching just being there.

Alan Hale always lent excellent support in every movie he was in.

And I can't think of John Wayne without thinking about Ward Bond who was his frequent co-star in many of his movies.

Claude Rains is another excellent character actor who always brighten any movie he was in.

Upon my first trip to whats left of Tinsel-Town & I was at the veeery top of 318 acres in Glendale's "Forest Lawn, park" & while trying to get a long shot of *"The Great: Tracy's" garden grave & a huge George Washington statue near it, I fell down a large hill & there it was, I was alongside the very modest grave of DONALD CRISP!

On that note, Maureen 0'Hara once spoke of him & called him a typical "Scot" & would take all to dinner & then make them pay
