That is 7 days before official; nominees announced on January 23rd, 2018) (LIKE MY NOMINATIONS EARLY PREDIX SAVE THIS IF YOU LIKE & ALWAYS WANT VIEWPOINTS) But, just for more fun, I'm really jumping the broom & predicting just what will eventually win *"The Golden Boy?")-(NOTE: Important to first see Jakeem's 2017 page, where I compiled early contenders only?)> BEST PICTURE?: "The Shape of Water" (Fox Searchlight) BEST ACTOR?: Gary 0ldman in "Darkest Hour" BEST ACTRESS?: Frances McDormand in "Three Billboards 0utside Ebbing Missouri" S. 5. This little poll/survey is broken down into two categories, so please bare with me Who & what are your personal all-time favourite motion picture comedians-(top 5 to 10?): (NOTE: I love ever sooo many film genre's, but out & out-(no comedy-dramas though please) is my fav. film genre of 'em all & per usual I'll first submit my own 1st place &*Charles (Spencer) Chaplin-(l889-l977) & was barely 5'5 He even bested *0son by doing everything Starring, decting, writing, producing & even his own scores i.e. "Smile") (TRIVIA: *Chaplin was at first nommed for *Academy awards for 1927/28's "The Circus" But founder & mogul of moguls L./B. Mayer detested comics & withdrew his nomination instead & only awarded him, a special statuette instead. & of all things L.B. wanted future Nazi sympathizer *Emil Jannings the 1st Best Actor *Academy Award, though in *Jannings defense during the 1920's he was widely regarded as worlds greatest actor) For more fun fax *Chaplin loved Switzerland & was later interred there instead. His "Dream Factory" still stands on La Brea. (MY FAV. "MODERN TIMES"/"DUCK SOUP"-(which was always Groucho's fav.) 2nd Buster Keaton-(l895-l966) & was 5'4 A tragic figure to say the least! He was almost as brilliant as *Charlie, some say better. But, sound & MGM did the job on him, plus his ex-wife as well. MGM then oput him in B-films with Durante instead? "Forest Lawn, Cem" in Hollywood Hills WHAT WAS HER NAME SPORETS FANS NATALIE TALMADGE? (MY FAV OF HGIS "THE GENERAL"/"STEAMBOAT BILL, JR.") 3rd fav of mine "The Marx Brothers" (1929-49 together) *Chaplin & Buster don't make me laugh though, just watch in amazement! These guys do the trick BIG-TIME! Ever since I saw them on tv at 14. Groucho Marx-(Julius Henry Marx) (l890-l977), Chico Marx-(Leonard) (l886-l96l), Harpo-(Adolph Arthur Marx)-(l888-l964) Their biggest smash $hit$ by far was 1935's "A Night at the 0pera" (M-G-M) & then '37's "A Day at the Races" (MGM) & Groucho always credited it to *Thalberg-(l899-l936)_& MY FAVS VERY CLOSE BETWEEN "OPERA" & "DUCK SOUP" All the bros chose different locations to be laid to rest though? 4th W.C. Fields-(William Claude Dunkenfield)-(l879-l946)-(liked about his age) All know for his incredible fondness of BOOZE especially GIN, hence the nose & went from cirrhosis & W.C. loathed Christmas & ironically died on that holiday. His "WOF-STAR is directly in frt of a ladies strip club on H. Blvd by the way-(though it was installed posthumously of course) Ed McMahon's all-time idol since childhood asW.C. Fields! He was laid to rest inside the rude to fans "Great Mausoleum" in Glendale MY ESSENTIAL FIELDS: "IT'S A GIFT" & "NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK") 5th "The Three Stooges" (l934-959) but only under contract to what most dubbed "The Meanest Man in Town" Columbia Mogul *Harry Cohn-(l89l-l958) prior to that they were on stage & a couple MGM flix & W/Clark Gable no less At fiurst it was Ted Healy & his 3 Stooges, but they did not get along (TRIVIA/FAX: Healy was later beaten to death in or outside a bar in '37 & rumor now has it that the sometimes beloved *Wally Beery was among the 2 to 3 bullies-(LOOK IT UP IT'S ALL OVER THE PLACE THESEDAYS) Moe Howard-(Moses Harold Horwitz)-(l897-l975), Larry Fine-(Laurence Finberg)-(l902-75), Curly Howard-(Jerome Horwitz)-(l903-52)-(tons of fans visit his humble grave & leave marks of the stooges!), Shemp Howard-(Samuel Horwitz)-(l895-l955)-(my fav.) & then there was the obnoxious & hated Joe Besser-(l907-88)-(the sole stooge present when they finally got a "Walk-of-Fame Star" in '84 & finally the dull Curly Joe DeRita-(l909-93) By then they had become children friendly only though MY FAVS: "MEN IN BLACK" (l934) & with Shemp "A GOOF ON THE ROOF"-(he preferred 1951's "Scrambled Brains" I KNOW THEY WERE LOW BROW, BUT HILARIOUS & GREW UP ON THEM VIA TV. MOST THINK THE EARLY SHOIRTS WERE FILMED FOR TV, NOPE, THEY WERE PT OF A FEATURE FILM & were up for an *Oscar for '34's "Men In Black" (ALSO-RANS): "Laurel and Hardy" started in silent era & even got greater if possible! Stan Laurel-(Arthur Stanley Jefferson)-(l890-l965) & Oliver Hardy_(Norvell Hardy)-(l892-l957) & both are also far away in the afterelife? They even won a rare *AMPAS statue for 1931-32's tremendoiusly hilarious "The Music Box" Many stars have copied them, including *"The Great 0ne: Jackie Gleason":-(his heroes were Ollie & Jack 0akie) & of course Dick Van Dyke does a mean Stanley. ARGUABLY THEE SINGLE GREATEST COMEDY TEAM IN MOTION PICTURE HISTORY, though for "HONEYMOONERS BUFFS" such as myself Ralph Kramden & Ed Norton come very, very, close! HOIPEFULLY LEAVE THE REST TO YOU SMART FANS??? I left out the legendary A & C???
  6. O MY! I found this thee single worst nightmarish production I went to in my 36 years reviewing new releases Only went because of "Marevelous Michelle" & there was very early *Oscar buzz for her for s. actress, not gonna' happen though, not this time! I've never ever walked out of a new release, but was on the verge to me pal LawrenceA It did have some pretty good cinematography, mostly early on though BUT, THE BABY SEQUENCE-(no spoiler alert here) WAS IT FOR ME BUDDY! & a usually good filmmaker "The Wrestler" (2008) ($38m,.) & others I bet you right now this is up for Golden Razzies? It barely squeezed to $18m. In essence I found it disgusting moviemaking & what were they going for? On Pfeiffer's 2017 plus side & this is bizarre considering the type of motion picture it is her "Murder on the 0rient Express" (strong **1/2-out of 4) is now hitting $100m. magic mark? & will certainly earn noms for costumes, etc Did you see that one yet LawrenceA? THANX & YOU GOTTA'; SEE "THREE BILLBOARDS..." Somewhat a throwback to the late 1960's & '70's cinema, unpredictable all the way Next up "DARKEST HOUR"
  7. & By the way, I voted for Bill Clinton twice no less-(only voted republican twice to date in my 53yrs) I'm certain you just adore Bill as well & he was a fine president, however, when it comes to being a sedxual predator he may well take the cake-(even over JFK) his hero by the way I'm not talking about Lewinski, etc but it was almost now proven that he physically raped another intern & right in the Oval 0ffice! So please don't try & get on yoiur high horse next time & these forums are certainly not for these pc nonsense By the way can';t you judge a beautiful actress by just er looks? (FORWARD THIS TO YOUR FRIENDS, PLEASE DO) On my 16yrs on here I never heardcsuch a pc backlash about the ladies ofd the silver-screen By he way MM's IQ was 153 THANK YOU
  8. Lafette, for the record I've been married twice already & have be4en around lots of ladies
  9. What has now this totally asinine political correctness gotten into our very own & mind you, old style, cinema website now??? This absolute nonsense must end, it's over now & not to get political but Trump won & I'm certain you voted for Hillary, am I correct? I didn't vote for either candidate by the way. I've never ever seen such bile over losing a presidential election in this country & I'm 53 now! I despise saying pc things like "Get Over Yourself" & "get a Life" but apparently you are living in the past, as are your pals that logged-in. This marvelous site is not like FB & the rest & not for your pc views. Who would you have liked as the 45th pres Bella Abzug, if she's even still alive? This fun little poll & survey has been conducted by many before myself. I just wanted to update it "TALKING ABOUT WOMEN" is a crime??? Let me tell you something kiddo, this entire fad-(a lot of it is true by the way i.e. Wienstein & some others) will absolutely hurt women nowadays in even getting hired Bosses will be too afraid of the backlash & therefore more of the economy will certainly suffer! IT WILL PASS, JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY ANOITHER FAD This was about the most beautiful ladies & not IQ's Don't know your age, but it sounds like you have mucho to learn
  10. NOITE: I missed hitting button or notifications, someone help, please
  11. Certain this has been already covered, but it may be way buried by now & I wanted this little poll & Survey to be up to date, please Who do you fellow TCM-ITES personally rank as Hollywoods Top Ten All-Time Most Beautiful Ladies/Actresses? Of course I'll start the ball rolling with (*-again will always indicates *Oscar victor) 1st place Natalie Wood-(l938-l98l) & was barely 5'0, but Jack L. Warner wanted in the trades to make her seem like 5'3?-(P.S. I know what many are thinkin' but this is a very, very, personal choice going back to when I was a kid in 1980, a yr before she stunningly went away Just check out Natalia in "Daisy Clover" "Splendor in the Grass") 2. Greta Garbo-(l905-90) 5'7 & most will scoff at this pick, but even "Guinness World Records" once voted "The Goddess" as the most beautiful woman that ever lived & it's huge survey in the 1930's was not limited to cinema either!) 3. *Elizabeth Taylor-(l932-2011) & was 5'4 & 1/2 Looking at *Liz in the likes of "A Place in the Sun" "Giant" "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" she was dazzling & at that time most critics easily cited her as A #1 on this globe!) 4. Michelle Pfeiffer(l958-) & 5'7 though I tend to believe "Marvelous Michelle" is actually 5'6, no matter Absolutely luminescent especially during the 1980's & 1990's HER HIGHNNOTE: 1989's "Fabulous Baker Boys"-(her 2nd of 3 *AMPAS loses to date) 5. *Nicole Kidman (l967-) &* 5'10 & 1/2m many will also so no way with the Australian beauty I never really cared for her until 1995's ":To Die For" & then onward) 6th place for me *Catherine Zeta-Jones-(l970-) 5'6 at best 7th *Grace Kelly-(l929-82) The future "Queen of Monaco"-(hope I spelled it ok?) during the 1980's was my #1 vote) 8th Jane Seymour-(l95l-) Solitaire in Bond's 1973 "Live & Let Die" & at her pinnacle in the ever growing cult flick from 1980 "Somewhere In Time" ALERT: when you can check out Jane-(Joyce Penelope Wilhelmenia Frankenberg) in the tv mini-series from 1980 "East of Eden") 9th Kim Novak-(l933) at her prime in the likes of "Man With the Golden Arm" & "Vertigo") & I have a fondness for Hedy Lamarr-(1913-2000) Plus, to me anyway Keira Knightley is close today WELP, PLEASE VOTE
  12. Didn't catch you was this? Anyway please feel free to join in & submit some of your own, please! Had to leave a few out of course, so again your pix would be greatly appreciated! BY THE WAY WHO HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF SEEING-(or even pt of it) LAST SUNDAYS STUNNINGLY AWFUL (*-BOMB rating) "A Christmas Story-Live?" It virtually had nada to do with the tremendous '83 original & MUSICAL NUMBERS THROWN IN, PLUS OF COURSE PC ALL OVER Sole saving grace maybe M. Broderick, but he looked bored as well?
  13. (*-always will indicate an *Oscar victory) & as cited on heading & hope it's not too late-(THOUGH WE STILL HAVE NEW YRS HUH?) Please cast your own votes for the all-time best Holiday, Christmas Cinema?: Of course mine in the perrinnal-(1st accidentally caught in channel surfing on an old B & W tv in 1979 up in New Jersey & my gut just knew it was different, going from lightness to darknesss) #1. "It's A Wonderful Life" (l946 RKO Radio)-(was a flop at first though & though earning 5 nods it lost to the timely *"Best Yrs of 0ur Lives"-(7) & without pause both *Jimmy & *Capra not only insist it was their finest, but even over "Kane!") #2. "Miracle 34th Street" (l947-Fox)_ (*Oscar victor Edmund Gwenn of course took home s. actor gold, but he is the lead? & on a personal note 8 yr old NATALIE!)-(FOOTNOTE: Remade in 1994 with *R. Attenborough & Fox promised if you didn't enjoy this follow-up they would refund your $ticket$ only hit $17m. though) & a fairly nice fantasy (**1/2) #4th "Little Women" (l933-Selzinck/RKO) (most purists vote for this perfect version & especially *"THE GREAT KATE!" Matter of fact she always thought she deserved her very 1st of all 4 leading *Oscars for this as "Jo" & not "Morning Glory") & OOPs, of al;l people/ladies I cannot leave out tiny Winona Ryder's almost as exceptional 1994 version It even hit $50m.) & she snagged her 2nd *Oscar shot to date, plus the beautiful score by Thomas Newman also nommed!) #3rd place "A Christmas Story" (l983) (I know it's also been beaten to death, but it doesn't have 1 weal scene iot it, huh? & THAT LEG LAMP, THE TURKEYS, CHANGING THE TIRE, & THAT ABSULUTELY CHARMING & BEAUTIFUL FINALE!!! I lived at the time only 5 blocks from my local theatre & didn't go, reason director Bob Clark had just done "Porky's" Think it barely made $11m. & if there were any *Academy justice, who agrees this was *Oscar material all the way??? (****-stars!) #5th. *"Going My Way" (l944 Paramount) (but I ask you is this a c'mas story, you decide) Though just across a crack in the ground-(same lot) was RKO & they shot *Bing's "Bell's pf St Mary's" next door & it's more c'mas of course, but not as marvelous! #6th "Meet Me in St. Louis" (l944 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) (many historians cite this work as Judy's finest hr of acting, do you? & if ONLY MGM was still like this again, huh fans THANK YOU KIRK KIKORIAN!!! #7th "A Christmas Carol" (l95l-British) (Most buffs agree this U.K. version is simply without peer! & Alistair Sim was robbed of a Best Actor nomination-(P.S. Among my library I have an older book ("AMC's Great Christmas Movies"-(before it changed to the other AMC network?) & it totally ignored the above brit version??? They only include the 1938 MGM version (***), "Scrooge" (l970)-(musical) & many tv movies, best of all 1984's with *George C. Scottt (***), Marlo Thomas, Henry Winkler #8th "The Bishop's Wife" (l947-Goldwyn) (Cary Grant as a perfect angel & the biggest $hit$ of that year. Won an *Academy award for it special effects too) Plus there was a 1996 follow-up with 2 time winner *Denzel Washington & Whitney Houston It barely grossed $46m. but was ok at best (**1/2) (Also-Rans): 1994's "Muppet Christmas Carol" with 2 time *Oscar winner *Michael Caine ($34m.) (***) & I like "Elf" ($174m.) (***) & don't 4-get these 2 massive $hits$ "The Santa Claus" (l994) ($145m.) (**1/2) With Tim Allen & warrented a sequel that made even more at $147m.) (**) & of course by far thee single biggest $financial$ smash of them all, but I'm no fan (barely **) "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000) (actually sold over $261m. in tickets?) Dig this one, not only *Ron Howard's biggest hit, but Jim Carrey's as well Manage to win an *Oscar though for Make-Up. I;m certain it looked great on paper though FINAL NOTE & TO THOSE THAT CAN EVER GET THIS TAPE, AUDIO, CASSETTE,etc TRUST ME FRIENDS!!! There was a talk radio host from Tampa Bay, Fl-(now deceased) & one c';mas eve he brought in his own copy of *LIONEL BARRYMORE'S final & annual radio broadcast from 1938/39 of "Scrooge!" IT IS WITHOUT PEER PLEASSE CHIME-IN thanx & MERRY CHRISTMAS
  14. Sorry to damper this to his mammoth legion of fans & it's obviously Alfred Hitchcock-(l899-l980) is quite possibly our all-0time runner-up finest filmmaker Thing is he rteally had a BIG PROBLEM with his leadiong ladies, most notably *Oscar winner Grace Kelly-(l929-l982) not that he got cute with the future Princess Grace, but it's widely known he was truly "In Love" with her rest of his life! As for the nightmare Tippi Hedren-(l931-) went through with him first on the terrificly scary 1963 "The Birds" (***1/2) & then, certified it with 1964's good (***) "Marnie He once delivered a giuft package to her door wanting her for the latter & Melanie Griffith opened iot up first & it was her mother dressed in same outfit & pecked a lot from "The Birds" & in a little coffin no less!?
  15. Above is a couple of fun things Firstly try & outguess what the nearly now almost (9,000)-(went up 3.000 in 3trs) You know yhat it's like & of Ebert & Siskel, Joel Siegel, EW magazine, & an 9inmcteasaiung amount of online contest & unfortunate, they are getting larger) & most really **** shows that they loved it?) , Of course I'll throw me old "Oscar-0racle" hand the the race again & the nominees for Best Picture WILL BE?-(NOTE" Again, the almost now 9,000 voting block memberts that AMPAS-(went up almost 3,000 in just 3 short yrs)>-(again, not my perticurluly favs)>-(+*as usual denote possible leader to ("walk Down-the-Aisle) y self emposed deadline for final forecasting is 1 week before official noms are abounced on Tuesdayanuary, 23rd, 2018 & STILL SUBJECT FORE REVISION)? Call Me By Your Name (A-24) The Darkest Hour Dunkirk (Universal) (U.S. gross $200m.) Get 0ut (Universal) (*1/2-out of 4 stars) ($175m.) *LadyBird (A 24) Mudbound (Nextflix) The Phantom Thread *The Shape of Water_(I already currently project this leading the field with at least 10-11 noms) (Fox Searchlight) & *Three Billboards 0utsaide Ebbing Missouri- ($22m.td (4 stars!) & if there are 10 again?: "The Florida Project" Best Actor?: Timothy Chalamet in "Call Me By Your Name" Daniel Day-Lewis, "Phantom Thread" James Franco, "The Artist" Tom Hanks, "The Post": & *Gary 0ldman in "Darkest Hour" S. Actor?: *Willem Dafoe in "The Florida Project" Woody Harrelson, "Three Billboards..." Richard Jenkins, "The Shape Of Water" & Michael Sthublarg, "Call Me Tor Name" Best Suppotimng SAvctressDirector?:L
  16. Anyway, the somewhat always tragic co-star of hers Alan "SHANE" Ladd-(l913-l964) apparently beat her to the punch. Many at this late date still simply won't believe me that Alan actually shot himself; around 1961-62, he said it was an accident to the cops & immediately did a B-picture-(4-get it's title, you TCM-ITES can easily locate it) & to cover his awful limp in this (**) film, they made it seem as he was mugged & disabled instead? Sadly, he knew his hgt dilemma & especially when meeting all the ladies that had crush's on him & even more! *Shirley MacLaine comes to mind & finally got to meet her true love, at a Tinsel-Town bar somewhere & she was taken back & he could obviously tell-(HURTING) Now *Shirley was then at best 5'6 & Ladd was 5'5 to 5'6 but always wore lifts-(P.S. an article I once posted on here few yrs back by the way, on Hollywood Heavyweights & them Heighting) Some refused like *CAGNEY of whom was actually 5'7 "Angels With Dirty Faces" he loathed anything phony) CHECK OUT ALAN'S BY FAR ULTIMATE ROLE IN "SHANE" AS AN EXAMPLE! Bottom line he eventually killed himself in his rm with sleeping pills
  17. Tears back she was a topic ina marvelous movie bookI had a sub to "Films of the Golden Age"-(TO ALL, IS IT STILL AROUND?) It stated she was then a fry cook of waitresss?
  18. Saw a recent before & after shot of V & she really aged & quickly, considering she was only 22-24 in her best flix? MY FAV & MOST OHERS I'M CERTAIN ONE OF THE TOP TEN ALL-TIME OUTRIGHT COMEDIES 1942 "Preston Sturges" (Paramount)-(TRIVIA: Of course the *Coen Bros. used LOTS for their own marvelous 2000 "0h, Brother Where Art Though?" ($45m.) (****-stars!) I have a rather morbid, but necessary movie book in my ever growing collection & it lists what she went from, but can't recall right now WHAT WAS IT & THAT YOUNG
  19. Longtime character actor & stuntman, Harry Carey, Jr. on a brief tcm homage firmly said he though *JW outright deserved Best Actor *Oscar for "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"_9& not the 1 he was up for the yr in "Sands of Iwo Jima") instead-(TRIVIA: *"Duke" turned down the future *Academy award winning role *B. Crawford took hoime for 1949's *"All the King's Men") & then even turned down TV's longest running scripted tv series "Gunsmoke?" & it ran from 1955-75 However, longest running ovrall tv program to date is ":Meet the Press" Anyhow, Carey went on to outright & this always bugs me BIG-TIME! When people make blanket statements about whom shoulda' taken home *"The Golden Boy" without even knowing what officially won, or was even nommed!? Carey says he deserved it for "The Searchers"-(official contenders that yr of 1956 were>*Brynner, "King & I'-(REAL EGOMANIAC THOUGH!), James Dean in "Giant"-(posthumously of course) Rock Hudson, "Giant" Olivier in "Richard III"-(ranks among the finest works by an actor I've seen though!) & K. Douglas, "Lust forLife" (YOU VOTE & DECIDE?) & Carey, Jr. also firmly believed *"DUKE" deserved it for his grande finale & I agree meself 1976's "The Shootist" My rational only being is that the utterly magnificent work by *Finch in "Network" was more a s. actor role, where is *Holden was it's anchor THANX
  20. Red River must easily be rated among Hollywoods All-Time Top Ten Greatest Westerns!!! As Maltin says it's basically a take-off of sorts of *"Mutiny on the Bounty" (l935 MGM) When *&John "Pappy" Ford saw it he told his protegee *Duke": Hell, I never knew you could act" unquote Sepiatone, I've written about this very &important topic since 1st hitting cyberspace around 2000-2001 & along with the legendary likes of *"THE WOOMAN" & *SCORSESE & many others, do you recall when they testified before congress over this matter of computer colorization of original B & W classics? Apparently *Woody & the rest lost though, sadly. However,m in recent yrs it's fading, thank god! Don't know if you love "KANE' but can u imagine? Larry King wrote for USA Today in late '80's & firmly insisted 1 movie they would never colorize was his fav of all 1954's *"0n the Waterfront" THANK YOU & FINE TOPIC!
  21. they Hawks, altered the very grande finale, due to him thinkin' moviefans would never want to see *"DUKE WAYNE" killed! & despite as Maltin says it's one of the great movies ever & cites it *"Mutiny on the Bounty" on the high seas He spoke of this finale & quite a few truisits were upset about it's pat ending
  22. WHAT IS THE BLUE EYED WORLDES THIS MAVE TO DO WITH *"THE DUKE'S" LEGHEDARY WESTERNTHOUGH???
  23. Fairly good topic & rackingmy mick brain I can-(right now though) think of any of his films that even were remotely to do with CHRISTMAS?
