For some reason, your original post no longer has this video embedded, cigarjoe. So, I'm quoting it and refreshing.

WOW, so someone else caught this ultra off-the-wall as usual David Lynch movie, huh

Though his show "Twin Peaks" (l9909l) had far greater music & songs then the new series he's still making

  2. F it's legendary for Garbo first uttering "I Want to Be Alone" unquote.

However, as much as I admire her, it was *Joan Crawford that was MVP

(TRIVIA: TOP TCM FANS, THEY ARE FAIRLY SIMILAR, BUT WHICH MOVIE DO YOU LIKE MORE *"GRAND HOTEL" (l932) (MGM) or "DINNER AT EIGHT" (l933) (Selznick/M-G-M)-(the latter didn't snag 1 single nomination???)

Personally I've always compared the two myself

I thought some might get a kick out of seeing this clip of an old fashioned "hold back the crowds" Hollywood film premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, with a good chunk (certainly MGM chunk) of 1932 Hollywood showing up for the event.

Among the many celebrities you get to see Jean Harlow, with husband Paul Bern beside her (Bern would be dead two years later under still mysterious circumstances). Brief as it is, I suspect this may be one of the few film clips in existence that has the two of them together.

& *"GRAND HOTEL"  (M-G-M) only won 1 *Academy award but it was for "The Biggie" Best picture that year, in pt to give *Thalberg an *Oscar   Still a grand picture though!

  4. SAGEBRUSH, first of all sent you a couple neat movie related items, buit they bounced back buddy-(lease clarify)

& as they say HOLLYWOOD never does it up like that anymore

Nowadays & mostly on current tv shows, they first must explain who the person is???

Where are the current likes of *Nicholson, *Streep, *Sandy & many others on these gossip shows?

Now they warn fans to not even visit Hollywood, Blvd at night?

*"The King of Hollywood: Gable" would be so proud of what these ani9mals have done to his town hye was voted "King" of once

    (SAGEBRUSH, DID YOU MEET *SHEARER?)

& DROP ME ALINE AGAIN AS YOU USED TO (jeffshannon50@gmail.com)

    THANK YOU

  6. EVER SOOO MANY TRUE MOVIEBUFFS & SUCH  NOW VOTE/CITE BARBARA (Ruby Stevens) STANYWYCK-(l907-90) EITHER AS A #1 OR EASILY AMONG THEM!

Of course she never "Walked Down-the-Aisle" with an *Oscar (0 for 4) & OBVIOUSLY SHOULD HAVE, TWICE IN MY VIEW

Though was at l;east honored with AFI's 1987 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award & was ranked at #11th all-time actresses in it 1999 poll.

By the way, she chose to be cremated & ashes scattered over Lone Pine, CALIF.

Great minds sometimes think alike.  I like Olivia, too, but I don't know where I would rate her but I will say that Olivia in THE HEIRESS is one of the truly great performances of all time, in my opinion.

Re I REMEMBER MAMA.  I didn't know if I would like it as I've kinda gotten out of that sort of sentimental movie as I've gotten older but when I finally saw it, I really liked it and that was largely due to Irene.

Irene in THE AWFUL TRUTH and THEODORA GOES WILD - she is so perfect and has such wonderful chemistry with her male co-stars.  Time for TCM to show THEODORA again.

THEDORA GOES WILD is such a great film. So funny. She and Melvyn Douglas worked very well together, and it's a shame they didn't team up again.

To Top, as you know that was her debut shot at an *Academy Award.   Larry King-0(l933-) back when he used to have his great talk radio show-(l980's) had producer that was her nephew

When I rate performers, they have to be able to do comedy, drama and music for me to consider them exceptional. Irene Dunne could do all three with considerable skill and was a triple threat. It boggles the mind she had so many Oscar nominations and not one "win."

Her performance in THEODORA GOES WILD is timeless. It just sparkles. She really captivates the audience and radiates something special in the film.

I also love her performance in LIFE WITH FATHER. She's the perfect foil for William Powell. On paper, it doesn't seem like it would work-- nobody thinks of Irene Dunne when they think of William Powell, and vice-versa-- but they are truly memorable battling and loving each other in that film. She had to be the most versatile actress of her generation to do so well with such an incredible variety of costars.

Another thing so great about her is that she never comes across as a product of any single studio. She seems to have an innate knowledge of studio product and adapts herself well. Not long ago I watched the Paramount boxing drama she did with Fred MacMurray called INVITATION TO HAPPINESS, made the same year as RKO's LOVE AFFAIR. She's so different, packaged so differently by those two studios-- except for her face and voice you wouldn't even know it was the same actress. She just acts and seems so different. It's like they found specific ways to use her talents and she adjusted to what each studio wanted. She was a chameleon.

    Screen shot 2017-11-18 at 4.23.18 PM.png

MacMurray as a fighter???  I thought I know virtually all boxing motion pix, never even heard of this one though? & I alwayts almost 4-0get, Dunne was fine in the marevelous 1947 "Life With Father" It's just that *Oscar contender William Powell really overshadowed here this time!  (TRIVIA: Although he lost Best Actor to *Colman in "A Double Life" that year, he did win the NYFCC Award

  10. somewhat like Irene Dunne-(l898-l990) she went (0 for 4 wiuth *Oscar though) mostly in 1948's beautifully made "I Remember Mama:" (***1/2)   However, there's another nasty side to *"The Great: Spencer Tracy" & it was while they were shooting 1944's "A Guy Named Joe" M-G=-M   He was on the wagon & his *Kate was gone right then, so he took all out on Dunne & BIG-TIME!    Not only being nasty to the actress, but constantly calling her "Needle Nose" throughout the production. She was in tears & both were called to what was then called "The Iron Lung"-(because it was kept so cold for several) L.B. Mayer's office in *"The Thalberg bldg."  Like kids in high school, though admittedly later by him, it was his doing.  Anyway, things got straightened out ok, but notice they never worked together again

The PGA=-(Producers Guild of America) has in recent yrs become a far better barometer of what the now (8,476 AMPAS voters) may vote for for Best Picture.

Globes are sadly now basically a joke for us pundits & the DGA has now slit (8) years with BD *Oscar winner!

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981) -- viewed on CinemaxMPW-42739

I had always heard that this remake of the 1946 classic film noir did not add up to much, that it added graphic sex scenes, but was just a pale imitation of the original. Well, now, as of today's showing on Cinemax, I can say that this statement is unfounded in reality. True, the 1946 classic is still the better film with its taut pacing, moody black-and-white photography and career-best work from John Garfield and Lana Turner. But this 1981 version is a more than satisfying film.

Indeed, while the much ballyhooed sex scenes just seem excessive, the ending leaves out the ironic twist that gave the story its title, and a scene with Anjelica Huston as a lion trainer seems out of place this is still a sturdy textbook example of a worthy early-80s film, treated badly at the time, that appears much stronger and finely wrought today, daring and fascinating in a time where too many new blockbusters seem pallid.  Jack Nicholson turns in fine work as the drifter drawn into an affair first and murder later. As the femme fatale, Jessica Lange is even better and has remarkable control in what was only her fourth film. It remains some of her best work in her prestigious career.  John Colicos also makes a strong impression as Lange's husband. the 1934 period detail is meticulously well-done and Sven Nykvist's luscious cinematography is ideal. And this  story still has its punch. It is about time for this film to be reappraised.

    AGREED! I think it's ok (**1/2) & with a look. & it really showed *Lange's first time acting-wise!

This thread is intended for people to share their thoughts on films that they recently saw.  I also made a counter thread "A Waste of Space on the DVR" for those films that were total duds.  This is not limited to films seen on TCM.

I just watched a few films:

Wabash Avenue.  I just saw this film with Betty Grable and Victor Mature.  I remember last summer, Dargo tried to get me to like Mature more.  While I did like him in I Wake Up Screaming, I can never see him as the supposed heartthrob that he was supposed to be.  Mature does absolutely nothing for me--lookswise.  I do like him as smarmy characters.  He seems to do smarmy well.  Betty Grable was beautiful as always and wore many costumes to show off her great legs.  This film was entertaining when I watched it, but is ultimately forgettable.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  This was a great film.  While it was heavy on the CGI, it was a fun film with an interesting plot.   James Spader was great as the voice of the villain, Ultron.  The Avengers themselves were also fun, and I thought it was interesting how the filmmakers worked around Scarlett Johanssen's pregnancy (stunt doubles & CGI).  I also like that the group seems to be evolving and making room for two new Avengers: The Scarlet Witch (played very well by The Olsen Twins' sister, Elizabeth Olsen) and Falcon.  I look forward to the next film and the next superhero film in the Marvel franchise-- Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.  I recorded this film for Jean Arthur.  I'll have to admit right here that I've seen three Capra films: It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Arsenic and Old Lace.  My opinion of star Gary Cooper unfortunately is not that high.  He was awful in Love in the Afternoon.  I found him very dull and in Love in the Afternoon, director Billy Wilder would have been better off hiring a mannequin for Cooper's part.  In Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Cooper wasn't that bad, but I can't figure out WHY he was such a big star.  Maybe he was better in silent films.  Cooper just seems to have no pizzazz.  Perhaps if they had cast James Stewart or maybe even Cary Grant, it might have been more interesting.  I wanted to say Errol Flynn, but he might have had too much flair for the part of Longfellow Deeds.  I hate to say it, but I liked Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder's remake better! But I did love Jean Arthur in this film.  She never gives a bad performance in my opinion.

Think *Capra's 1936 "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (Columbia) a masterpiece though & on almost every level! I like Arthur a lot too. It won the 2nd NYFCC-(New York Film Critics Circle Award0-(est: 1935-) for Best Film * due to it winning BD *Oscar, that generally means that particular film was the runner-up to take the Best Picture *Academy Award. All-along *Capra meant for his even greater 1939 masterpiece "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (Columbia) to be a follow=up-up & again w/*Coop. "Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington"  For trivia buffs: Jean Arthur's one & only shot at an *Oscar was fore '43's "More the Merrier" Dietrich really looked down on her during shooting of 1948's "A Foreign Affair" though & was insulting

  15. & A few on here may have already wrote about this, just in case though. It appears that Sylvester Stallone-(l946-) is now also going to make a follow-up top 2015's very good (***1/2-out of 4 stars) ($110m.) film "Creed"   His 2015 *Oscar shot-(only other for acting shot since the great 1976 *"ROCKY") for s. actor that year and was easily considered another huge upset that year-=(*Mark Rylance, "Bridge of Spies") took it instead. Thing is, this is kind of the reason the *AMPAS possibly didn't go all the way & vote Sly the *Golden Boy?"  They take lots into account & w/all his sequels & such, it may have went against him?

  16.  Pretty good article on the now virtually forgotten Marion Davis-(l897-l96l)-(Marion Duvras) I just happened by her grave-(actually more like a small maus.) "Hollywood Forever, cem./" (Arthur Lake also inside) & one can't really mention her without William Randolph Hearst-(l863-l95l)   Anyone ever see the images of San Simeon by the way Xanadu in "Kane" & located down here in FL   Hearst stifled her career & she was best at comedic roles, but he wanted her in pts like GARBO,etc instead. as much as I admire "The Genius"/"Boy Wonder" *Orson Welles-(l9l5-=95) he really played dirty pool about them in reality though. Invited to San Simeon he tried top find out & virtually did everything he could.   The most outrageous thing I can't discuss in these forums though. Only thing I can say is it had to do with the legendary "ROSEBUD"  Hearst was ultra-jealous about her & *Chaplin as many know & that leads to another controversial story involving all of them & an ill-fated trip on the Hearst yacht & Thomas Ince. (SEE: "RKO 281" & "Cat's Meow")

    THANK YOU

Okay then, and if you insist slayton, how about Inherit the Wind ???

    LOL

(...sorry, couldn't resist...okay okay, and NOW back to movies about CHARLIE...and we AIN'T talkin' 'bout the one starring Cliff Robertson here, folks...and besides, THAT one is spelled differently) ;)

WHAT IN THE... IS THIS ABOUT THE MAGNIFICENT & ALL-TIMER COURTROOM DRAMA "INHERIT THE WIND" (UA_)-(though shot at Universal Studios)???

(TRIVIA: only a couple yrs back *Shirley MacLaine-(l934-) was a guest again on Larry King-(l933-) & I think-(didn't hear it all) she pointed to it, *"Lawrence of Arabia" & 1 or 2 more pictures as her ultimate motion pictures!!!

  18. I saw that well-made '76 tv movie (***-out of 4 stars) a few times over the years. & like I mentioned, Railsback was perfecto in the infamous role, but given his appearance, etc it's obvious why he has always had trouble getting top roles

He even played "Ed Gein" in a rarely known or seen film about what he did in the 1950's

BUT, WHOP ELSE SAW THE GREAT (4 styars!) 1980 "THE STUNTMAN?"

  19.    Going over a ton of 2017 litrerature-(online & mags & elsewhere) "The Shape of Water" just me be the feel good film to upset the current project winner "Dunkirk" for the coveted Best Picture *Academy Award & also, it may lead the field come January 23rd, nominee day with (10 to 12?)  I'm serious too. Just note the categories it can figure into & you'll see what I mean & as always noted, Hollywood has always preferred drunks, handicapped roles & such & sally Hawkins portrays a mute here!?     People like & respected "Dunkirk" but never heard a sole say it was great or they loved it   Though still early of course

  20.  I previously wrote to a pal o'mine on here about knowing the nationwide release date of *"The Woodman's"-(a phrase I picked up once from Bill Murray on SNL when predicting the 1977 *Oscars)  Who will turn 82 in Dec.

Latest release "Wonder Wheel?"  It marks his 47th as director. Last year he had the ok (**1/2) "Café, Society"  By the way 2016 had a handful of flix that were tributes to Tinsel-Town>"La La Land" ($155m.) "Hail, Caesar!" ($30m.) (**1/2) & *Beatty's biggest $flop$ of his career, only raking in $4m. I thought it was pretty good though, but far from accurate i.e. "The Aviator" & a 1980's tv movie starring *Tommy Lee Jones, "The Amazing Howard Hughes" (***)

I like 'em better when he's in them myself

Please contact me on it's release-(says Dec. 1st but limited, meaning LA, NY & Chicago) His flix "Scoop" "Celebrity" & a couple others never got a wide release, so I'm wondering?)

He already holds record for most writing nods with (18 to date)

*Kate Winslet stars in this one.

    "Essential *Woody"

*"Annie Hall" "Manhattan" "Hannah and Her Sisters" & "Crimes and Misdemeanors"-(equal & it's his choice as his finest), "Broadway Danny Rose" & "The Purple Rose of Cairo"  But his funniest & he once challenged Ebert & Siskel to watch his 1971 "Bananas" again & see if they didn't bust a gut laughing, they did & he won & his 1972 performance in "Play It Again, Sam?" deserved a Best Actor shot)

    His Worst: "Anything Else" (2005) ($5m.) (*)

    & his biggest $hit$ "Midnight in Paris" ($71m.) (***)

(P.S. A kinda' funny & true story according not only to Mia, but others. Back when he had that sex scandal-(1994) Mia's ex *FRANCIS (Albert) SINATRA virtually nagged Farrow if he could have *Allen's legs broken, she declined)

Again,  it isn't the scenes, per se, but the pacing.   Yea,  the death of Winninger is handled in a lighthearted manner (so yea, good point) but right after this Jimmy goes and puts on his guns.   The music stresses that something has changed in Jimmy.  That NOW he is going to get serious.  The fun is over,  pardner!

This tension continues with the men getting their guns for a shootout.   But the tension is released too early (IMO),  by having the ladies join the action.

Yea,  I really love this film (and Jimmy does get Frenchie,  off screen so I'm sure he loved making the film),  and it is a good film,  but I just would have changed the ending slightly if I was the director.

Ever had the opportunity to see the documentary by *Maximilian Schell "Marlene" (l984)?

& for any *James Stewart fans out there & there are lots of course. Try & find online-(I still have it somewhere on video) A marvelous special *"James Stewart: A Wonderful Life" where he walks around the Universal backlot-("Harvey" is just one he shot there & as of this 1987 special, the house was still-standing) he just talks & walks with host: Johnny Carson-(l925-2005) & lots of clips, think it's 90 minutes & maybe on youtube   Since he was a young buy Johnny's movie idol was *Jimmy & Jack Benny-(l894-l974) overall & his fav. pic was *"Casablanca"

THANX  & let me know if you saw it already, or find it

  22. For those that don't hate her out there, it's now become "the In Thing" to pick on her, mainly because she's older a bit now, but *Streisand is 75 & *Cher, 71

(MADONNA (Louise Veronica) CICCONE-(l958-) all-time & most of her life, is Dietrich & Marilyn Monroe  HENCE: Her famed, but I found out it was fake "Beauty Mark" she had for yrs, though it's now been gone for yrs unfortunately & on the subject of her & movies>"To Kill a Mockingbird" "*English Patient" & "A Place in the Sun" her fav. films.
