Somehow women still make up less than a third of speaking characters in top U.S. movies: http://slate.me/2fhGTD3

Among sole releases I kind of regret not going to, just fed-up w/comics, sequels, remakes. Did go to the almost lousy at times & massively $expensive$ "Batman vs. Superman" ($330m.) (**) last year though. & speaking of it, it was well-known in Tinsel-Town & elsewhere that *Ben Affleck really juiced up w/steroids for that role. It was obvious, there were shots of him already twice his normal size leaving places. & you don't get that big that fast from just lifting weights either! It's main debit was Jesse Eisemnberg as Lex Luther. Usually a pretty talented actor, but waaay over the top here. *Hackman was easily the finest in that role.

I could have told you that Detroit wouldn't be #1 for the weekend, and it wasn't because of any political reasons, either. It wasn't distributed widely enough. No movie that doesn't come to my local theater ever hits #1. And while we got The Dark Tower and Kidnap this weekend, we did not get Detroit.
It's also got very premature *Oscar buzz?

Emoji Movie, with a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, made $12 million last weekend.
The Girl Without Hands, with 100% rating, made $1,246.

Also go by (metacriutic.com) & of course (imdb.com)

& said to be yet another "asinine" concept in this era.

Arguably the worlds greatest "living" actor & achieved what even *Tracy didn't-(though should have for "0ld Man & the Sea" or even same yrs "Last Hurrah" (l958)-(critics actually preferred the later)
In taking home a staggering all (3) Leading actor *Academy Awards, & I must admit, another fellow Irish *Daniel Day-Lewis-(l957-) may now be awarded AFI's-(American Film Institute)
& not only because he claimed recently he was quitting, but those 3 *Oscars help
I personally thought Jerry Lewis-(maybe too low-brow for them or something?) But *Mel Brooks was awarded it. *Hopkins & *Duvall deserved to be next, before it's too-late if you know what I mean?
-
OOPS, BUT WHERE IS ALL-TIME *OSCAR NOMINEE (20 td) *"MARVELOUS MERYL STREEP?"-(Jakeem, whats her next project?)
& I know many hate her, "I LOVE 'ER!" A limited actress, but for those that just know of her from her videos all these (34yrs) any detractors must check her out in concert!!! 3 to 3 & 1/2 hour epics & plays almost every instrument too! & know of her personal problems, behavior, etc But, MADONNA (Louise) CICCONE was helming an adapted work on "Greta Wells?" (TRIVIA: Don't know how she achieved this, but I'm pretty certain Back in 2007 she had her massive lit up image at night on the side of "THE HOLLYWOOD ROOSEVELT HOTEL" But strangely she doesn't want a "Walk-of-Fame" "Star?")
-
Last thing I want to do is step on my buddy (Jakeem's) toes, by not posting these in his own & superb post-(don't like the word thread)
& I'm positive knowing him he already knows of a lot of these coming soon 2017 major movies
(In no special order) & to him, please immediately not only let me know what you think of these, but add them to your own post if you like>
Some seem like certain *Academy (AMPAS) Award bait & of course others don'-(P.S. They already released Brian Cox' version of "Churchill" in very limited release though. Think it grossed $1m. to date)
(FALL & EVEN SOME END OF THE YEAR NEW MOTION PICTURES) & don't yet have nation wide release dates. I'm certain (jakeem) may have them 1st though
"Wonder Wheel" (think it's *"The Woodman'S' 47th or 48th behind the camera? Last yrs "Café, Society" was 47 I think. Personally I love 'em better when he's also in his flix myself. *Kate Winslet & jakeem would know who else stars?)

"Blade Runner: 2049" (October)-(proud of myself after seeing this as a kid & just had a gut feeling the 1982 version was something special & only sold $33m. in tickets back then)
"Call Me By Your Name' (Sundance)
"Beatrice at Dinner" (Salma Hayek)
"Breathe" (Andrew Garfield & the amazingly talented Andy Serkis makes his directorial debut here)
"Detroit" (*Kathryn Bigalow helms & is sole female to win the BD Gold yet)
"Lady Bird" (Saoirse ("Brooklyn") Ronan)
"Mudbound" (Carey Mulligan in another Sundance fav.)
"Downsizing" (*M. Damon stars in writer & *Oscar winner *A. Payne's pic.)
"The Papers" (*Spielberg is BACK!)
"Film Stars Don't Die" (4 time *Oscar loser A. Bening stars here)
"The Wife" (6 time *Oscar loser Glenn Close is back on "The Silver-Screen!")
"Battle of the Sexes" (very strong early buzz about the tennis rivalry between Billie Jean King & Bobby Riggs, stars recent *Oscar winner *Emma Stone & Steve Carell)
"Mother" (Jennifer ("America's Current Sweetheart") Lawrence again!)

"Stronger" (Jake Gylklenhaal stars as a Bostoin Bombing Survivor/victim)
"The Current War" (*Oscar nominee Benedict Cumbermatch stars in a huge & pivotal role as Thomas (Alva) Edison. Of course comparisons will be there between him & *"The Great: Tracy" in his very strong (***1/2) (1940-MGM) "Edison, the Man" (P.S. Though very early but just imagine of this yrs Best Actor race has the 2 Churchill bio's & this historical bio too)
"Hostiles" *Christian Bale)
"Last Flag Flying" (Bryan ("Breaking Bad") Cranston)
"John Gotti (no clips yet on this highly anticipated bio of Mafioso Gottti, played by John Travolta this time out. Armand Assante already took on the role in a tv movie)
"Our Finest Hour" (it already looks as though the only 1 time contender Gary 0ldman just may go all the way & "Walk Down-the-Aisle' as Winston Churchill)
"Victoria & Abdul" (this would mark *Dame Judi Dench's #8th nomination! Only winning so far for '98's sweeping *"Shakespear in Love" (s. actress & holds record for shortest per to ever win) BFI-(British Film Institute) once voted her #1 all-time U.K. actress!)
"Murder on the 0rient Express"-(Nov. 10th I think our own jakeem said) & I hope K. Branagh has a better role here then in "Dunkirk" Also co-stars one of my favs alive "Marvelous Michelle Pfeiffer!") The fellow "Irishmen's" *AMPAS contender even rivals *0livier's "Henry V" (l946) WHO SAW IT?)
"Logan Lucky" (*Steven Soderbergh again & Tinsel-Town loves him)
"Mudbound"
"United: Kingdom"
"Mary Poppins"-(live-action version of what was my very first movie being taken to, by my mother in a re-issue) & I still say it's better then that yrs big 8 time sweeping musical *"My Fair Lady"
"Star Wars 8"-(what else needs to be said about this one? (TREIVIA: The last installment is currently the highest grossing film ever produced at over $936m. domestically.)
& though no masterpiece, who knows what ever happened to Tim Burton, WINONA RYDER & Michael Keaton's long in the talks "BEETLEJUICE II" (l988) ($71 million)???
& just a tiny sample of 2018 at the movies>
*Tarentino's probably, no certain, gory version of the Tate/Manson saga Sharon's sister said there is no way she''' go to this movie!
"Indiana Jones 5" (Ford is amazing & at almost age 76!)
"The Irishman" (*Scorsese & *Joe Pesci reunite! & *Pesci said he was retiring back on 07.)

& of course more & of course tons more sequels, comic books, rehashes the works
THANK YOU

Most people can't remember past Harry Potter.
AGREED UPON & IT'S PATHETIC!!! I absolutely hate when younger so called moviebuffs, etc Just say "O, that was before my time"
That's called "HISTORY" you idiots
When I first fell "IN LOVE" with cionema, I immediately wanted to see what the likes of TV's Mike Douglas, Griffin, Snyder, etc were talking about, first & foremost & did. Then I started going to & studying the new jazz also
-
I wouldn't go so far as to say the "greatest", but will concede to his being MORE "actor" than other silent performers of the time.

AGREED! Although most historians in books & elsewhere, cite *Emil Jannings

, Possible Spoiler Alerts!
I took a break from these message boards for at least a couple of weeks, I can't remember, maybe it's been three weeks. I was getting exhausted coming here every day and so little new content or different content being generated. So, I thought if I left for a while, maybe that would fix that.
I saw Dunkirk, and while I thought overall it was pretty good, I would like to say there's something a little ... off about it. And I will try to elaborate why.
Christopher Nolan wants to have his cake and eat it too, and he's been successful enough that he's one of the very few directors who gets the opportunity to so anymore, in a franchise world where the auteur theory is dead and producers are way more important than directors (witness Kathleen Kennedy firing the Lord brothers from the Han Solo movie because they were actually attempting to impose a personal vision upon it, something the Star Wars franchise will never allow any director to do ever. She replaced them with competent if a little boring Ron Howard, who will do exactly she wants).
Nolan wants to work in super-mainstream genres: super-heroes, war, science fiction. But he wants his product also to be very self-consciously and in-your-face artsy-fartsy. He sets up little rules for each movie and he plays by them, and it's up to the viewers to figure them out.
There are three main storylines in Dunkirk, and each one unspools over a different frame of time, a very artsy-fartsy decision by Nolan. So, the Harry Styles storyline covers one week of time. The Mark Rylance storyline covers one day. And the Tom Hardy storyline covers only one hour! This information is provided to us at the beginning of the movie, but I gotta say, I was too dumb to get what the movie was trying to tell me! We see a title card that reads "1. The Mole: One Week". This is supposed to tell us that this particular storyline in the movie is going to cover one week. But I spent 15 seconds thinking, "One week? What does that mean?" before there was so much shooting I got caught up in the action on-screen and didn't think about the title card for the rest of the movie.
It was not until I read a review the next day that I was enlightened as to Nolan's intent. And folks, I am a movie veteran. I've seen (Nolan's) Memento. I've seen Pulp Fiction. I've seen Last Year at Marienbad. I am accustomed to movies effing around with time concepts. But I didn't get that this movie was screwing around with time for the entirety of the time that I watched it. I was like, man, Tom Hardy has been in that plane for a really unrealistic amount of time!
Now, you can either say I'm just stupid, and I'm guessing Nolan would probably say I am, but I'm arrogant enough to think that if I didn't get the time tricks, and I think I'm a smarter, more observant viewer of movies than 99 per cent of the population (most of us on here probably feel that way about ourselves), then I'm guessing 99 per cent of the viewers of Dunkirk didn't get, or didn't even notice, all this jumping around in time. Doesn't really distract from one's enjoyment of the movie, unless you stop to think about Tom Hardy still being in that plane ...
Other extremely self-consciously artsy-fartsy Nolan choices: no German soldier's face is ever seen clearly in the entire movie. Also, the violence is very self-consciously bloodless and sanitary. Nolan has said he wanted the movie to be about rescue and heroism; not war and violence.
There's also a ticking stopwatch motif playing on the soundtrack virtually the entire movie. Nolan's call or Hans Zimmer's, I don't know. But like three-quarters of the way in, I almost yelled at the screen, "Oh my God, I GET IT ALREADY! Time is running out! Stop playing that ticking stopwatch!" The stopwatch features very prominently in the trailers. I didn't know it was also going to run for the duration of the movie, as well.
It had noi characterdeleopment????

& to add to the above 2017 upcoming releases I already posted on here, I thought it only polite to post these on (Jakeem's running post & not a new one)
EW-(Entertainment Weekly) just released a lot of upcoming & they say *Oscar contenders for the fall of 2017 & most are>
Best Picture:
"Call Me By Your Name" (Sundance biggie)
"Breathe" (Andrew ("Hacksaw Ridge") Garfield stars & the amazingly talented Andy Serkis makes his directorial debut)
"Lady Bird" (Saoirse Ronan already a contender for "Brooklyn")
"Mudbound" (Sundance) & stars Carey Mulligan. This one already has huge buzz
"Downsizing" (D-Alexander Payne who has already taken home 2 *Oscars for his writing)
"The Papers" (Spielberg is back!)
Best Actor according to EW:
Steve Carell in "Battle of the Sexes" as Bobby Riggs
Jake Gyllenhaal in "Stronger" as a Boston Bombing victim
Benedict Cumbermatch in & as Albert Einstein in "The Current War"-(NOTE: Imagine if he's up for leading actor vs. 0ldman & Brian Cox for the 2 Churchill bio's)
Christian Bale in "Hostiles"
Bryan Cranston in "Last Flag Flying"
Matt Damon in "Downsizing"
& Actress:
Annette Bening in "Film Stars Don't Die"-(would mark her 5th try)
Emma Stone in "Battle of the Sexes" as Billie Jean King
Glenn Close in "The Wife"-(she already has 6 nods. to date)
Judi Dench in "Victoria & Abdul"-(you know how they love costume/period pieces)
Jennifer Lawrence in "Mother"
Quite a number are left out of course, but that's that for now
JAKEEM, please send your thoughts

To Lawrence & others on the topic of "DUNKIRK" You know where Time & others are putting out & poublishing those tremendous collectors edition magazine's in most stores
Well, they now have 1 of "DUNKIRK"

Although the movie is still well-made I've scanned through the book & it's better
-
Maybe they should have worn helmets with their names on them.

That is pt of the problem
-
I do recognize the guy pictured on the left. He's Harry Styles of the British music group One Direction. I suppose Christopher Nolan realized it didn't hurt "The Longest Day" to cast teen idols Fabian, Paul Anka and Tommy Sands as American soldiers.

Fabian
"LONGEST DAY": IS A TREMENDOUS EPIC ON EVERY LEVEL! But up against *"Lawrence..." & "To Kill a Mockingbird" it only won for it's special effects that year

posted this due to the network airing silent flix of Lon Chaney, Sr.-(l883-l930) right now
& there are a few on FB-(one is a make-up artist & his father was also one) who literally idolizes
"The Man of a Thousand Faces" & I'm certain most would be inclined to agree that he (*Cagney) was "robbed" of another Best Actor shot for that bio. Only it's script was remembered?
I mean what more does 1 have to do?
& wanted the most intelligent online fans viewpoint on this, who would rate him as A No. 1 finest thespian?
His sole debit was he didn't really conquer comedy though
As all are aware they really did not have the *Academy (AMPAS) Awards yet, not when he made his masterpieces "Hunchback of Notre Dame" (l923-MGM) & "Phantom of the 0pera" (l925-M-G-M) Perhaps they should have given him an honorary statue
But come to think of it, we all know how the *AMPAS is somewhat not fond of horror
Most literature says that prior to *Spencer Tracy, *Emil Jannings (l884=-l950) the very first Best Actor winner, was widely regarded as the worlds greatest
One thing is certain *Cagney was outrageously snubbed for his magnificent work as Chaney in '57's "Man of a Thousand Faces" (U-I)
As they say, adding to his mystique Chaney was interred-(cremated) in an unmarked niche inside "The Great Maus." Glendale's, "Forest Lawn"
THANK YOU

Many here may not yet be familiar with mostly character actor & *Oscar nominee ("The Revenant") Tom Hardy
This guy is an amazinly talented & versatile actor!
He transforms such as *De Niro used to * Penn still does
Other roles to date are> "Dark Knight: Rises" Most recent "Mad Max" adventure/science-fiction,
"Warrior" "Dunkirk"-(though you'd never know it was him, until towards the finale), "Legend" (a nasty, ultra-violent gangster film about The Krays in the '60's underworld, where he portrays both brothers & was snubbed by the *Academy of at least a nomination for it)
& a few others
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not as much into James Bond as I once was. Last one I went to was "GoldenEye" (l995) Pierce Brosnan & Dalton were as dull as dishwater. Hasn't Daniel Craig done (5) to date? Just saw where he committed to one more.
There was even talk of Idris Elba in the role, but did Fleming ever write about a black actor portraying James Bond?
I'm not alone in Hardy though & please reply & I thank you
-
I know several on here rate it higher then myself, but in retrospect I'd give it (***-out of four) instead of 3 & 1/2
Just my opinion of course A few critics are even more dissapointed & give it a (**1/2)
Tom Hardy's role looks like t was definately edited down

Went to "American Graffiti" three times when it came out. It was my senior year in high school.
A PHENOMENAL PICTURE!!!
Sadly you should see Candy Clark-(only 1 to be remembered come *Oscar nominee day) on one of the "Law & Order" shows & Le Mat sure didn't hit the highnote, huh& who would have ever think it that Harrison Ford would become a legend
Matter of fact in 1994 (NATO)-National association of theatre 0wners voted Ford as the #1 all-time Box-0ffice Champion

I was heavily into Westerns as a kid mostly watched them on TV there were quite a few on in those days, but occasionally I'd see one at the theater, I remember seeing The Alamo at the local Lowes Triborough theater It must have been a road show cause I remember getting a souvenir booklet. I remember going to Nevada Smith and then not too long after that to see For A Few Dollars More in 1966 at the Astoria Theater.
I went to school in Manhattan on 54th street between 5th and 6th Ave so I was two blocks from Times Square. At some time late in the year either November or December some of the Times Square theaters began showing a double bill of A Fistfull Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More so it was a short walk for me to spend about four hours after school watching Sergio Leone's films. At the end of December The Good The Bad and The Ugly had its US premier. I went to that multiple times. Then the Times Square theaters started stringing all three of them together so you had a triple bill that you could spend almost 6 hours at.
The Leone Westerns must have did pretty good business cause the theaters would bring them back in triple bills up to 1968 when they added Hang 'em High to the three Leone Westerns with Eastwood being the connection to all four, so now you could spend 8 hours at the theater and of course I did.

Apparently it's your favorite *Mel flick right? Ebert & Siskel couldn't rave enough about "The Produycers" (l968) That later version was a wash-out starring: Nathan Lane & M. Broderick Looks like I was about only person the go & see it, it barely hit $20m. Wasn't bad though & Uma looked gorgeous!
(TRIVIA: This is not idle gossip, but well known in Hollywood history The legendary Marilyn Monroe had a massive crush on both Zero Mostel and Albert Einstein)

SEPIATONE, I agree 100% on prices & where is it going? I get 1/2 off at local theaters myself though, reckon' because I;m such a regular.
It's the concession stand that does it. Up until '96-(from 1982) I only got some ice water
Ever see 2000's "Fantasia: 2000?"
& I'll never forget, technically I shgouldn't have been admitted though. But seeing *"The Godfather" & had to go to the bathroom & someguy was heaving BIG-TIME at horse's head sequence

To Jakeem, did you or someone edit down these releases I posted on here yesterday? Because there was a lot more I submitted?
Looking ahead in the distant future, *Dench is the a-typical type they would want to vote a 2nd *Academy award & for a typical period pc costume drama. I'll never forget the late Gene Siskel was adamant about her winning for '97's "Mrs. Brown"
Stating she should win by "proclamation" Unless of course they finally want to honor Bening?
& though incredibally early, 0ldman seems the frontrunner already. Jakeem, ever see him in ":Sid & Nancy" "State of Grace" =(my pick as his finest work to date!)"Dracula"-(many pick on that thriller, but I agree w/Maltin in rating it a 3 & 1/2. It had everything going for it, music, performances, costumes, art-direction, sound, visuals. It's score was not in the race though> & did take home Best Make-Up, Sound Effects & Costume Design & made $83m. Not so much scary-(I rarely if ever get scared at a movie) but amazing to look at! & as you & others may be aware I'm very prejudiced when it comes to little WINONA! Others he did I wonder if you've seen yet>"True Romance"(AMAZING SUPPORTING WORK!), "The Professional" "The Contender"-(but Jeff Bridges got the nod.), But I've yet to see his sole *Oscar bid td "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?"
I know I got the same EW info & typically the magazine didn't even bother to include it???
