  1. I keep thinking she's been an *Oscar nominee for something?
  2. Was just watching & rewatching trailers of upcoming releases & as many already know there are 2 big bio's of Winston Churchill-(l874-l965) coming up in theaters 1 is with Brian Cox, the original Hannibal Lechter in Michael Mann's powerful crime-drama from 1986 "Manhunter" (strong ***-out of 4) It's title is just "Churchill" & he looks extaordinary in the role 2ndly is *Oscar nominee ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") Gary 0ldman's stunning to just look at work in "0ur Finest Hour"-(it cites it as a November release) At this very early stage of my annual favorite game "Predicting, oddsmaking *Oscars"-(though I rarely agree with their outcome I still love it BIG-TIME!) (EXAMPLE: Only (3) of my all-time favorite films have won Best Picture) But I'm gonna' go out on a very early limb & judging from the trailer, I can already see Oldman taking home the Best Actor statue, though it's a toss-up between these 2 performances I always say when it comes to handicapping *Oscar I often go by the director of a certain picture, but I never heard of either filmmaker of these 2 biographies Oldman may have the edge due to also being a veteran of so many excellent roles ("Sid & Nancy" "State of Grace" "True Romance" "Bram Stoker's Dracula" "The Professional" "The Contender" personally I don't really include his work in the "DK-franchise" because he's pretty boring in them though & others) see for yourself & check out these trailers (rotten tomatoes.com/ imdb.com)
  3. I know someone else already posted a thread on "Dunkirk" within these forums & it is excellently done! But, I just wanted to give my 2 cents on the much heralded WW11 motion picture, which I just saw last evening. For me, a huge history buff & that includes WW2, it was a little disappointing-(hope I spelled that ok, very tired) Technically it's perfecto filmmaking, editing, cinematography, sound & music score by *Oscar winning composer *Hans Zimmer. The problem is it's lack of character development here & I'll always remember what Howard Hawks told Robert Mitchum about doing 1967's Western "El Dorado" Mitchum asked whats it about & Hawks just replied "No Story, Just Character" unquote There's nobody to care about or even root for in this epic. Even Kenneth Branagh-(coming up again in the rehash of "Murder on the 0rient Express") just stands around making facial gestures & the ever talented Tom Hardy has a throw away role. I was really looking forward to this true story. Don't think it's yet been touched on by Hollywood either, except very briefly in the 1942 *Oscar sweeping *"Mrs. Miniver" Movie critics & fans alike have literally been nagging the *Academy to nominate director Christopher Nolan ("DK" "Interstellar" & more) & in all likelihood he will be in the race for this, as will the film. Though it's still early yet of course, but this type of epic just bleeds *Oscars. The older audience I attended it with applauded at the finale. It'll be very interesting though if it is up for *Academy Awards, due to 2 bio's of Winston Churchill coming too. Not one of the great WW2 films, but still certainly worth a look & surprisingly it's already soared past the $100 million mark with ticket buyers (barely ***1/2-out of four) THANK YOU
  4. I agree on that point , it's like they are already programmed to like or dislike something because the masses say something. Like peer pressure right
  5. AGREED 100% Though you can't discount all WW2 flix released within the last 20 to 25 years I agree all the way that Hollywood had the market cornered on just about everything, but the likes of "Pvt. Ryan" "The Thin Red Line" & of course the all-time great 1993 *Oscar sweeping *"Schindler's List" to name a few
  6. Epics such as this must be seen on "The Silver-Screen"
  7. & along with "PC" all the rest of this increasing garbage I loath when young folks just say something was "Before Their Time" That's what history is
  8. TO JAKEHOLMAN, wonder just vhow many so called cinephiles know who that(handle) is? Do you ever get feedback about it? I certainly do, my childhood hero McQueen's one & only shot at an *Oscar from '66's great "The Sand Pebbles"
  9. To hamradio, you saw it as "PC?" I didn't catch that in it myself
  10. A fan of *Clint-(by the way he has yet another coming up & at almost age 88!) But not so much with his "Hang 'Em High" (TRIVIA: Leone desperately wanted him for Harmonica in the magnificent "0nce Upon a Time in the West" (l969) but for some reason *eastwood didn't want to do it? So of course Charles Bronson inherited the pivotal role instead. *Clint always talks about Sergio not speaking to him the rest of his life too, passing away in 1989 at only age 60
  11. Can you believe I've never seen "A Hard Day's Night" Which is your favorite *Bogie picture & also *Bette Davis'?
  12. I also got to go to a Lowes theatre back in the summer of 1979 to see "Rockly II" Of course it's probably gone by now "The Alamo" (l960) gets a bad rap, but is well made in my view (***1/2) Not so with *"The Duke's" 2nd & final directorial effort in 1968's mess "The Green Berets" But you can obviously see for those looking for it, *Ford's influence on him with "The Alamo" It was up for BP but not him for BD. & the 2004 remake was also well-made with *Billy Bob Thornton *"The Duke" looked like he was still fighting WW11 style in it But it was a huge $hit$ Talking about "GB" Who's ever seen the semi rare photos of not only *Ford, but Ward Bond visiting him on the set of "The Alamo?" Bond died just after at only 57
  13. Speaking of Hawkins, have you-(or anyone else) seen "The Theory of Everything" (2014) *Eddie Redmayne was astonishing in the role & won Best Actor for it
  14. 2 more great lines "Spam in a can" & "You got any Beamen's, I'll pay you back later"
  15. Good ICON/AVATAR with Peter 0'Toole=-(l932-2013) He holds all-time *Academy (AMPAS) record for most nominations without ever winning with (8) Stunningly "robbed" for his larger than life role in '68's "Lion in Winter" *Cliff Robertson in "Charly" took the statuette instead? I'd also cite his towering role in *"Lawrence..." but *Peck as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" was also superb (NOTE: "Premiere magazine" once voted 0'Toole as *"Lawrence..." as the overall greatest performance by anyone ever!) His son was on talk radio-(George Noory) the other night by the way. Obviously Irish, 0'Toole was always known to wear "Green Socks"
  16. Wonder how *Jessica Lange-(l949-) is holding up?
  17. You got me, never as yet saw 'em buddy What other roles can you recall he did?
  18. However, all things list him as being born in 1942
  19. & A LONG SEQUENCE TOO PAL!!! I also love the heavyweight scene where they are all watching Sally Rand-=(I think it is) to "CLAIRE DE LUNE"-(do you have that clip too?) It's among my all-time top (3) fasvorite musical numbers
  20. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL SEQUENCES!!! A great line is when he crashed & the also already gone Levon Helm-("The Band") & other men are searching for Yeagar in all the smoke & they ask Helm "Is that a Man" & he replies "It Sure as Hell Is" unquote Yeah Jakeem, I wroite about tis fact of him being the sole cast member to be remembered come *Oscar nominee time that year. But the way Ebert & Siskel went on, they thought Ed (John Glenn) Harris was the standout,, especially because of his 180 role in "Under Fire" also in '83. Many critics call Harris the finest actor yet to win an *Academy Award. He's been up to bat (4) times to date for> "Apollo 13" (l995) ($172m.) (s. actor), "Truman Show" (l998) ($126m.) (s. actor nod.), "****" (2000) (his only leading shot td) & "The Hours" (2002) ($45m.) (also support)
  21. Swithin, which is that shot of?
  22. Yeah, he had a small role as *Streep's husband Then there was 1978's "Days of Heaven" (3 & 1/2) & 1980's "Resurrection" I think-(correct me if I;m wrong) his sole on-screen teaming with his lady *Jessica Lange was in 1984's "Country" (**1/2) That was the movie year dubbed "SAVE THE FARM" "Places in the Heart" & "The River" Unfortunately he helmed a lousy film with *Lange called "Far North" (*1/2) & I was incorrect & how could I forget the 2 in 1982's "Frances" (**1/2) In which *Jessica gave a devastating & *Oscar nommed performance! He had other big screen roles, but preferred the stage
  23. Anyone see 1984's "Fool for Love?" It was ok (**1/2) at best, but future *Oscar winner *Kim Basinger delivered her finest work yet in it.
