  1. Over the weekend, I visited a friend who has ALS.  My friend is in the 25% of cases that begin with voice/swallowing problems. His motor problems came later. He's at the two-year point. He can still move about a little.  His hands still function, which enables him to speak by typing into an iPad, which has a voice. Email/computer is a blessing as well, but he is weaker with every passing day. There are a lot of really good people and support groups available -- the ALS Association is amazing -- but still, it's awful.

WOW, you did your homework BIG-TIME!   Wonder what they called Lou Gehrig's disease, before Lou Gehrig though, if the had a technical title as yet?   Teri Garr has somekind of a similar disease, sadly!

  2. This is sad news.    Just the other day I mentioned her in a thread related to another version of the Fitzgerald story,   The Last Tycoon.      May she rest in peace.

The still barely known 1976 "Last Tycoon" (***1/2-out of 4) still is virtually an in unknown gem & I love anything about Tinsel-Town.

  3.

Still so sad about death of the exceptional Jeanne Moreau. Here are my memories of times spent together.

    http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-jeanne-moreau-remembrance-20170731-story.html

    quote-i-shall-die-very-young-maybe-seven

All droned on about 2016 & celebrity deaths, but as I said to many the changing of the calender is not gonna' alter this sad fact & obviously hasn't   On the heels of *Oscar contender Sam Shephard too!

& yet *Olivia De Havilland, 101/  K. Douglas, 100-(WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO KARMA WITH THIS MAN, HUH?),/ Jerry Lewis, 91/ *Mel Brooks also 91/ Tony Bennett, 91/ *Eva Marie Saint, 93/ Doris Day, 93/ Lloyd Nolan is 104 I believe/ Carl Reiner is 95/ Betty White also 95 & a few others.

  4.   (*-always indicates an *Academy (AMPAS) Award Winner)

A topic I've always loved, long before going on the internet too.

Please post your personal pix for movies that you loved sooo much-(or hated & were just fun to go & see over & over)  that you $paid$ to go see again & only counts of they were in a theatre now please?

As usual I'll start the ball w/some of mine in my almost (53) years on this planet  (In no special order either)

"Towering Inferno" (l974)-(as listed below McQueen was my idol ages 9 to 15, as was Evel Knievel-(l938-2007)-(went about 3 times) & typically of kids we used to act out the scenes

"Jaws" (l975)-(my best pal & I would go to it almost every day that summer where it was only a $buck)

"Apocalypse Now" (l979)-(I was officially too young at age 15 to be able to see it, but that didn't stop me. & that year of '79 means a lot to me personally, because I first fell in love with cinema-(a lot had to do with tv talk shows such as Mike Douglas-(l925-2006) who was a bona-fide cinephile & always spoke of Hollywoods Golden Age & *"The Great: Tracy" especially, his idol. Somewhat Merv Griffin-(l925-2007) but not as much. Johnny Carson-(l925-2005) is of course the "Mt. Summit" of them all, but rarely spoke of his own favorite's, except Jack Benny was his main idol & *Jimmy Stewart on "The Silver-Screen"-(NOTE: Go check out on youtube a NBC special he did with *Jimmy just walking around Universal) & when pressed Carson would choose *"Casablanca" & Tom Snyder-(l936-2006) was just marvelous & on every topic, movies being 1 He always siunce childhood thought *Tracy was "The Man" *I. Bergman of the ladies & *"Rebecca" his fav. film.  Even used to go through Rona Barrett's-(l936-) movie mags looking for photos of my 1st hero & "King of Movie Cool: Steve McQueen"-(l930-80)  I know she was all gossip though. I hate when most young & younger so called fans say they love cinema, but always say something only 2-25yrs is before their time & aren't interested. I always preferred classics. & went to "Apocalypse" about (30 times It really put the hook in me.

*"Platoon" (l986)-(3 times)-(some movies when over you can hear a pin drop, this was one)

    "Saving Pvt. Ryan" (l998) (twice)

    *"The Deer Hunter" (l978) (twice)

    "GodFellas" (l990) (3)

    "Pulp Fiction" (l986) (3)

"Courage Under Fire" (l996) (3 but only because I had a crush on Meg Ryan at the time)

    *"Titanic" (l997) (3 times)

I'd love to be in a major market NY, LA,etc-(not Chicago though by any means!!!), where us fans can go & see such legendary heavyweights sev. times as>"Captains Courageous"-(my fav. of his 74), "Splendor in the Grass"-(was also Natalie's own fav.),  "Some Came Running"-(fav. of *"The Chairman's") *Chaplin's masterpieces & more of course. Even *"Uncle Walt's glorious era>"Dumbo" "Pinocchio" "Fantasia"-I did go to see 2000's "Fantasia: 2000"  "The Searchers"  And despite living

ng down here in the bottom-of-the barrel state of FL I was lucky enough to go & see "Kane" *"Casablanca" "It's a Wonderful Life" "Rear Window" "Vertigo" "Teasure Sierra Madre"-(the theatre chopped scenes out!)

    "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"

But my "WISH-LIST" is>  *"The Godfather" "Godfather, Part 11" "C. Courageous" "Inherit the Wind" "Some Came Running" "Splendor in the Grass" "Daisy Clover" "A Night at the 0pera" either "City Lights" or "Modern Times" & a couple more

& I've gone back to see numerous releases twice, but not many three times

    SO, WHAT ARE YOURS?

  5.    Thought I'd post this in light of going to see "Dunkirk" in a couple of hours

Just wanted to see others reactions & pix on Hollywoods-(& foreign films) all-time

finest sub movies & of course during war,etc

& yep, you can include 1959's huge hit$$$ "Operation Petticoat" (***1/2) (TRIVIA: Tony Curtis was elated to star opposite his idol Cary Grant here & always claimed he not only joined the navy after going to see him in the terrific 1943 "Destination Tokyo" (WB'S) (***1/2) but then went further & rushed to HOLLYWOOD to become an actor. Most know he got to impersonate his idol in "Some Like It Hot" (l959-UA)  I'm not particularly a fan on his, but he lived his dream didn't he. Curtis always called himself "A Product of the MOVIES"

But can you name most of the rest?-(now, no looking it up anywhere, just off the top of your head. That's what counts the most!)

To name a few off the top of my Irish head are>-(In no special order except "DB")

"Das Boot" (l982)-(the "Kane" of the genre)

    "Hunt for Red 0ctober" (l990) ($122m.)

"Crimson Tide" (l995) ($91m.)-(man, *Hackman was dynamic, again!)

"K19: The Widowmaker" ($36m. is all this well-made film made & a true story. *K. Bigalow, sole female yet to win a BD *Oscar was at the helm. But she won her statue for 2009's superb war-film *"The Hurt Locker")

    "0n the Beach" (l959-UA)-(more of a science-fiction)

"Run Silent, Run Deep" (l958-Columbia) ("The Great: Don Rickles"-one of the few guys that can make me laugh anyway. Always told of when he was 1st on the set & first heard *"The King: Clark Gable" yelling "Dive, Dive, Dive" over the loudspeaker & almost messed himself! He'd never as yet met the iconic star)

    "U571" ($77m.)

    "The Enemy Below" (l957)

    & please help & I thank you

  6.     Jakeem, TopBilled & others may have already posted this one  I only just saw it hrs back

That *Oscar contender for s. actor Sam Shephard-(l942-2017) passed away, I think from an ongoing heart condition.

To me he'll always be remembered for 1983's tremendous "The Right Stuff" (only made $23 million at the time though)

& of it's huge cast>Ed Harris-(also superb that year in "Under Fire"), Dennis Quaid, Scott Glenn, Fred Ward, Barbara Hershey, Lance Henriksen, Kim Stanley, Jeff Goldblum & Chuck Yeagar himself had a cameo.  Sam was the sole performance recognized by the *AMPAS for it.

He & *Jessica Lange-(l949-) were together for decades & I think mainly resided in the Minnesota area.

He appeared & directed other flix, but this is the one he'll by far be most remembered for

His Yeagar was "THE COOLEST" of 'em all.

& just for fun sake the nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were

*Jack Nicholson in "Terms of Endearment" (won)

Charles Durning, "To Be or Not to Be"

John Lithgow, "Terms of Endearment"-(though far more deserving for his segment of "The Twilight Zone")

     Sam Shephard, "Right Stuff"

    & Rip  Torn, "Cross Creek"

    THANK YOU :(

  7.   And though he was never a "GP" Mr. Geoirge Burdell is another huge tcm fan & had a companion pc website

EVER HEAR OF HIM?  He covered his visit to the network one day & w/Osborne,etc

Just lost touch with him as well & corresponded with Mr. Burdell dating back to 2002

  8. EXCELLENT WORK!   But where is WINONA RYDER?

& I've know JOE BUONOCORE many yrs & even off of these foirums  He had to handle of (MONGO)

& we also compiled our own versions of "ALTERENATE OSCARS"  & snail-mailed them to each other.

It was fun & we not only picked our winners for the top 6 majors, but including original-score choices

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?  HE LIVED OR LIVES IN DELTONA FL & THINK HE WENT TO WORK WITH "HELPING ANGELS?"

TopBilled, I was just inquiring a few days ago about just this & have virtually all my "NP Guides" but they are buried in lg boxes   DO YOU KNOW OF A LIST OF MOST OF THEM, DATING BACK TO EVEN 20yrs AGO, OR EVEN LESS?

  11.    I just now caught the new trailer for 2 time *Oscar contender ("People vs. Larry Flynt" & "The Messenger") Woody Harrelson in another political bio-(i.e. the 2 "Churchill's soon coming out)

As fmr U.S. president: Lyndon (Baines) Johnson-(l908-=l973)

Being an *Oscar oddsmaker since 1982, I've learned that about 80% of the time to check out who is the director of the picture & Rob Reiner helms this bio!

Strangely Rob has yet to be up for BD though, despite so many popular flix    I know his 1984 great "Spinal Tap" was always up on Mr. 0sborne's favs ^ & it's my own fav. of Reiner's myself

"A Few Good Men" "When Harry Met Sally..."-(my 2nd)  "Misery" "Princess Bride" & more

    Jennifer Jason-Leigh co-stars :D

  12. The main thing off putting at first is the Polish filming locations, quite different, especially when The Inland Empire was the area surrounding Spokane Washington, so I was expecting (since he grew up around there) something along Twin Peaks lines but no it's completely different, I think I've only watched it twice I'll have to give it a go again like you said to get the jigsaw puzzle together.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFU:L COUNTRY UP THERE TOO!~   Unfortunately I've been stiuck downm here in FL almost 36yrs now, from New Jersey

  13. First season of the original Twin Peaks was great, the second not up to the first. Fire Walk With Me I liked a lot.  I don't have Showtime so will have to wait for it's second coming.

As far as the rest of Lynch's films I like them all to varying degrees so far with exception of Inland Empire which I haven't quite gotten into yet, I've watched it maybe twice.

Although I & many think "Fire Walk With Me" was a bit of a mess-(I'll never forget it's packed audience, though it eventually flopped with ticket sales) cheered when Agent Cooper finally first appeared & then, he was gone?

At any rate it's instantly classic & mezmerizing score by Badalamenti still deserved to be remembered come *Oscar time

  14. All horror, all the time.  Yuck!

    Lydecker

To Lydecker, obviously your a fan of Webb & probably the Hollywood stories that go with him, so I thought I'd throw a couple things at you in case you didn't yet know them, or they will just wet your appetite more on Mr. Webb

I'm certain you heard of the famed paranormal stories that involve the actor    His house is-(or was) still standing in Hollywood/La area

He was pushy Said his house was already haunted by Grace Moore of whom was killed in an airplane crash. -(she was an *AMPAS nominee for 1934's "0ne Night of Love") Then actor Gene Lockhart claimed his was haunted, along with his wife there. So Webb & his mother purchased it & I then-(may not recall exact order) *Victor Fleming bought & also lived in same house & claimed of hauntings.

Once they say it was finally raised, the hauntings at "Hollywood Forever Park" started there & even inside "Abbey of the Psalms" mausoleum where both Webb & *Fleming chose to be interred.  At any rate, it's become one of Tinsel-Town's biggest paranormal rumors.   Even the tour guides at that cem. try & scare fans when Clifton's wall niche will not close all the way & a number is all that

They generally have this Webb, *Fleming, Moore thing in almost all literature for HOLLYWOOD

  15.   Certain you already know of these & they are likely 2018 productions  *Streisand is remaking "Gypsy"

& Lady Gaga is in "A Star is Born" rehash

& as you've already written about *Tarentino takes on Tate/Manson murders

I can see that one already & the controversy coming

& doesn't Bette Midler have a big project?

  16.   To Lawrence & others on the topic of "DUNKIRK" You know where Time & others are putting out & poublishing those tremendous collectors edition magazine's in most stores

Well, they now have 1 of "DUNKIRK" :D

  17. JAKEEM., is this from you or Mr. Sam Adams in regard to going to the WW2 epic in all 3 formats?   I hope & plan to check it out on Tuesday. AS IT STANDS NOW, THOUSE AS MOST ARE AWARE IT'S PREMATRE. IT IS THEE CLEAR FRONT RUNNER FOR "THE BIGGIE" BEST FILM, BEST DIRECTOR-(Nolan)-(Tinsel-Town has long wanted to award him )

Also to Sam, how good or great is it?   Last rely strong WW2 film-(they don't make many those anymore) was *Mel's "Hacksaw Ridge" ($65m.) (***1/2) & Hollywood forgave him in nominating *Mel the 2nd time for BD Gold.

But many actually complained about it's gory & violence?

However, *Mel was still "robbed" & ignored by his peers for the massive $B.O.$ smash from 04 "Passion of the Christ" ($374m.)

    & a powerful pic. he helmed after 2007's "Apocalypto" ($17m.) (***1/2)

    Either received not 1 nomination???

& though expertely exceutred-(no pun intended)   "Passion" is also my pick as the most violent ever yet produced

    Runners-up: "300" (2007) ($218m.) & "Kill Bill, volume 1" (04) ($67m.)

(P.S. HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN "APOCALYPTO?" NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE)

  18.     The Judge Judy as a monthly "GP' "Guest Proigrammer" is a bit of a joke on this topic, though I'm still interested in it please?

Main item being asked is does anybody here have link & or ionfo on most of TCM's past monthly "Guest Programmers?"

I have tons of files on past "GP's" among them my personal-(& I know she's an acquired taste to many, especially after her recent SAG appearance) but I'm loyal & know what Winona Ryder-(l97l-) chose to be aired. Then she even got to host when Mr. 0sborne was out.  Believe me it was a huge deal for her!

& many, many, more  hut those papers are put away not & deep down.  So, given fans such as (Jakeem, Lawrence) & others I'm positive you guys would have somekind of links/answers to be found.

with "Pvt. Screenings"  which it looks like with the departure of Robert, there may not be anymore?)

(P.S. Just for kicks & this is a topic I started a couple of months ago, sadly & strangely no many chimed-in though?

IF I WERE A TCM "GP"-(limited to just 4 movies)> "Kane" (l941-RKO), "Captains Courageous" (l937-MGM), "Some Came Running" (l958-M-G-M)  and  * "Splendor in the Grass" (l96l)

(P.S. My 1st choice would be *"GFI" & *"GFII" strangely this network still cannot get the rights though, same goes for *Walt's animated classics?)

    :D  :D

  19.     I don't know how many on here really go to new movies, let alone these in it's own franchise?   This being the 3rd & said to be the last in the "Planet of the Apes-trilogy"

Not to be confused with Tim Burton's somewhat of a letdown 2001 "Planet of the Apes" ($l80m,.) (**1/2-out of four stars)  Which was strangely very heavy & dramatic considering Mr. Burton.

Although & each time I happen to catch any of it, Tim Roth delivers a towering performance as the villainous lead ape & the *Academy shoulda' been ashamed in not nominating the actor for a 2nd time.  (NOTE: *Heston even has a cameo & as an Ape in what turned out to be his swan-song.

Matter of fact it was shut-out entirely that *Oscar year.

But this will probably again be in the race for it's visual effects :D

These were better on the whole & this is more of an epic overall. & nobody mentions Woody Harrelson in another top notch role here. Amazing visuals & again & I always continue to push this, ANDY SERKIS is a marvel!  Most recall his Gollum in "the lord of the Rings-Trilogy"-(2001-2003) & then he fully portrayed "Kong" in *Peter Jackson 05 remake. Certainly something to behold vs. DeLaurentiis epic 1976 *Oscar winning version, where literally costume designer *Rick Baker walked around in a monkey suit?  & of course to your purists' out there, of which I'm one. Nothing matches the 1933 *Selznick/RKO version! (TRIVIA/FAX: The actual model Willis 0'Brien used was 3ft tall & was filmed at RKO radio Studios & it's then companion pc lot "Culver Studios"   Matter of fact next time you happen to catch *"GWTW" watch the legendary burning of Atlanta & that's the wall being burned that was previous used for "Kong"  "Little Lord Flauntleroy" & his 1936 "Last of the Mohicans" *Selznick threw in everything but the kitchen sink for it)

Each one of these seems to grow a bit stronger & the 1st made $176m. then the 2nd $208.  & I thought both were well made. & I'm one that is fed up with CGI, comics, sequels, remakes, etc

I grew up with the now also legendary late 1960's early '70's "Apes" pix.   ala 1968's famed "Planet of the Apes" (***1/2) w/*Charlton Heston & company. Matter of fact as a kid my mom & friends took me & my pals to a drive-in "Planet of the Apes" marathon   SUCH FUN IT WAS!!!

ANYONE REMEMBER THE RATHER SILLY "PLANET OF THE APES" TV-SERIES AS WELL?

Overall star rating (***1/2-out of 4)

    Next: "DUNKIRK"-(calling *Oscar)

    THANX
