  1. As coted McQueen/ali MacGraw & Peckinpah's huge $B.O.4 smash from 1972 "The Getaway" (***1/2) was on TCM again, question is, has anyone ever caught the scene for scene 1994 rehash-(same title as well) it barely made $20m.) & I went to it & it's not bad, it's justthat Alec Baldwin certainly is no McQUEEN! His then wife & future *Oscar winner *Kim Basinger took on the Ali MacGraw role & Michael Madsen & Jennifer Tilly took on the secondary roles WHJO'S EVER SEEN IT?
  2. This should go withoyut saying, that the network is long overdue among it's whine collections, to not yet have either *Frank Sinatra & or Dean Martin's among them? Anyway, whenever I've asked others on here if they have gotten any-(& our fav. Eddie Muller of course hosts the commercial) But, nobody by that stage of the game had even bought any of them???
  3. & I'm not positive, but I think that *Marlon was also Clift's concept of ideal motion piture actor, though he was 4yrs older? I do know a well-known yet sad accurate story By the time Clift stared shooting the superb1961 "Judgment at Nuremberg" He was already at age 41 shattered by drugs & booze, so much so that his role as a mentally disabled fmr Nazi prisoner (POW camps) of all people if was *Spencer Tracy that literally coaxed him throughout that role As for "the Genius" *Marlon himself- a word I've long felt was thrown around far too much, especially in cinema) he was typically hard to pigeonhole & on anything for that matter. When Larry King-(l933-) conducted that instantly & ridiculously controversial interview around '95 with him-(people came away saying he was a "Jew-Hater" because he frankly said & it's true, Jews run "Tinsel-Town". A compliment if anything & look at it's history, almost every "Movie-Mogul' was Jewish. L/B/ Mayer, *Irving G. Thalberg, *Samuel Goldwyn, *Jack Warner & his brothers, *Harry Cohn, *Adolph Zukor, Carl Laemmle & so on. Anyway, he also asked him where his 2 *Academy Awards were & *Marlon apparently couldn't recall. He said he gave 1 to a friend, etc? & of approx. 40 plus pictures he made, the only one he said he liked was 1968's "Burn!" & like I said, he never really had his own hero, etc Wally Cox & him were great friends since growing up together in 0maha, but if he was honest, his acting teacher Stella Adler would likely be his hero.
  4. "IM" certainly went by the way side, huh. But even Leonard Maltin agrees that his worst work yet is 05's awful (*) "Anything Else" ($5m. (TRIVIA FOR YA: Wht is *"The Woodman's" highest$grosser$ to date?) A hint, when pressed he rates it his finest work along with the often brilliant-(especially Martin Landau) 1989 "Crimes and Misdemeanors" ($18 million gross) For years he always had a pat answer & it was 1980's "Stardust Memories" he claimed because it made the least $money$ up[ to that point ( MORE FUN TRIVIA/FAX: In what film did he cast MADONNA & didn't even know who she was at the time? It was after all 1992 too?)
  5. Timberlake's not a bad actor & per usual likes she's now done with sooo many performers younger then her58yrs MADONNA also gave Justin a kickstart with the immensely popular song & mostly video "4 Minutes" He did a movie that was an unpleasant yet true mess (*1/2) "Alpha Dog" with Willis & S. Stone too. She did the same with a supposed yet ultra-public fake feud between her & Lady GaGa They even went on SNL & had a big physical brawl they are great pals though. Not so between her & Elton John though-(longer story) & of course she & a then unknown B. Spears had an alledged battle, until Britney broke out on her own
  6. THANK YOU FOR YOUR "LIKE" & 1987's grandly entertaining crime-drama-(but by no means accurate, just fantastic moviemaking!) "The Untouchables" (l987) ($76m. gross) seems to sadly not be remembered by many already? (EXAMPLE: Frank Nitti didn't go until around '46 & by his own hand) & some "Untouchables' fun-fax you may enjoy Originally Paramount & DePalma cast Bob Hoskins-(also already gone?) as Capone, mainly due to *Bobby D saying he was in the middle of another project. but soon as he got free they all of course wanted him to play Al Capone. so Hoskins actually did well $financially$ they pd him off & he didn't even have to do 1 sequence! On that note, that is yet another'87 *Oscar snub in *De Niro also not being up for s. actor vs. co-star *Sean Connery! Best Supporting Actors that yr were> *Connery-(of course he won) Albert Brooks in "Broadcast News" Morgan Freeman in "Street Smart"-(swept critics awards & marked the inception of his 2nd career) Vincent Gardenia in "Moonstruck" & Denzel Washington, "Cry Freedom" & what a year, also that year were both> Lee Ermey & Vincent D'0nfrio in "Full Metal Jacket"-(another film that is somewhat now finally getting it's due. Unfairly compared to *"Platoon" at the time, which I think is a heavyweight movie as well!!!) (TRIVIA: next time you guys watch "Full Metal..." in it's 2nd half, which Kubrick filmed in England. You can easily see everybody's breath from the cold & dampness) It truly was robbed of more *Oscar attention that year Only garnering nods for (*Connery-he deservedly scored & stil lhis 1& only nomination? i.e. "THE HILL" (l965)), Art-direction, Costumes & yet another dynamic score by *Morricone-(he lost to *"The Last Emperor's music score) & *Ennio shoulda' walked away with his 2nd consecutive win, 1986's "The Mission" was incredibally scored! THANK YOU & KEEPTHOSE 4 STAR IMAGES COMING? (P.S. Do you have when NATALIE was "STOTM" & there's a shot of her on "NP" for her month from "DAISY CLOVER?" It's sooo unfortunate, but due to this thing we love-(THE NET) we are also losing ever soi much & I predicted ":NP Guide" wpould go bye, bye about a year back. & I firmly see it coming to "EW magazine"-(been a subscriber to since 199) Prior to that the superior "Premiere" (l987-2002) "Classic Images" "Films of the Golden Age" are also on par, unless their gone already? As *"the great: Spencer Tracy" told the working girls in 1957's "Desk Set" (***1/2) his massive computer was there to help them & not take their jobs away I STILL & ALWAYS WILL JUST LOVE THE SMEL OF A BOOKSTORE!
  7. I recall many yrs ago when NATALIE WOOD stunningly went-(November 29th, 1981) I actually would call the tiny-(by comparison to others) 3 & 1/2 acre ":Westwood, cem" where she chose & they said in '58 *Colman had a brief ceremony there, but chose a park in Santa Barbara I'm not sure of this though? Superb speaking voice though & there was a fellow TCM-ITE (Mongo/Joe Buonocore) who I think is still somewhere on these boards? But, in his own "Alternate *Oscars" he voted/chose 1936's tremendous MGM epic "A Tale of Two Cities" as his BP winner that year & I had yet to see it, since have & he was correct, it's a grand picture!
  8. I do know that are dearly departed Robert O. loved 1942 "Random Harvest" (M-G-M) (BIG -TIME!)
  9. On my 2nd vacation to whats left of an empire called HOLLYWOOD-(November of '99) I got to go on what turned out to easily be the mt . summit of all the studio tours-(now of course that Kirk Kirkorian sold-off most of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 200 acres, now barely 40 & Sony) The Warner Bros. VIP tour was absolutely tremendous!!! & to me it's start was the best pt of it, the museum. Though I look nowadays at it & it's virtually all "Batman'/."Dark Knight" memorablelia & the little cart took us all past & stopped for over an hour at it's well-known "Town Sq.' Where "Music Man" & tons more were filmed Don't know about now as much, but it then still had instat "Dead End Kids/"Angels With Dirty Faces'/"Hells Kitchen" areas & the more upper crust areas where *Bette Davis worked so much. & the in betweens as well Even 2 elderly gents that worked there-(in the museum) so long & for decades 1 knew Edward G. Robinson a wee-bit. I always regret not inquiring about NATALIE WOOD though!? & the massive mountain you see in the background a lot ( "Daisy Clover") was used on the opposite side as the mountains for TV's "M*A*S*H" "Little House on the Prairie" & others & got to go past what was still the worlds largest sound stage-(4-get it's # right now) & my friend told me, after the driver said George Clooney & crew were filming 2000's "A Perfect Storm" inside. He said look for a basketball hoop & there it was (TRIVIA: After attempting to film 1958's magnificent epic "The 0ld Man and the Sea" off the coast of Cuba, etc *Tracy-(loathed location shoots) & fought a lot w/original director *F. Zinnemann. so WB's changed the director to J. Sturges & they eventually shot the rest in that very same s. stage)
  10. Good point! & I always pondered how *Cagney felt, when the real George M. Cohan-(l878-l942) was famous for saying-(after like *Ford, watching him repeatedly on stage in "The Last Mile" *"Spencer Tracy, Your The Best Damn Actor I've Ever seen" unquote Another unique thing about that era of performers-(what's lately been dubbed as "The Hemingway Generation") Is that most of them started on the stage first
  11. Obviously 1 I also 4-got Good goin pal I'll always recall when the scene of "the White House" being blown up the audience cheered it's obvious it won Best Visual effects that year over "Twister" for that sequence alone
  12. I neglected toi include a couple others already did & one that instantly gained cinematic infamy in 1985's hugely expensive Revolutionary War epic w/*Al Pacino-(in what he calls his first career, his 2nd started in '89 w/"Sea of Grass" & then of course "Dick Tracy" (l990-9s. actor nod.) It is Hugh Hudson's awful mess of an epic "Revolution" (*)
  13. PROBABLY& BY FAR THEE SINGLE GREATEST SHOT OF *BANCROFT! & I've written about this previously, but shortly before his demise on a tremendous "Pvt. Screenings" hosted this time by A. Baldwin, w/Mr. 0sborneas the guest. He said Gene Tierney-(l9l0-l99l) was his all-time favourite actress! A strange choice, given the fact 2 time *AMP{AS winner *0livia de Havilland-(l9l6-) was such a close pal of his?
  14. Sadly & typically today, most people that even dubb themselves as moviebuffs, have no idea who *Oscar victor *Ronald Colman-(l89l-l958) was??? But of course they are very well into the likes of Kim Kardashian???
  15. I believe your right in regard to Flynn/Barrymore. He even portrayed his by then long deceased pal in "Too Much Too soon" (l958)-(never saw it myself yet though) GOOD SCOOP ON *COOP & *COLMAN!!! (TRIVIA/FACT: A famed but true by all accounts story that involved Flynn & the just deceased Jack Barrymore. also involved Gene Fowler & W.C. Fields. supposedly they were sitting with the corpse of JB, having just stolen his body from the morgue. Wanting of course to have a final drink w/their great pal & Errol Flynn walked in & there was JB sitting up as if still alive And this story was shown in full blown & funny fashion in Blake Edwards 1981 "S.O.B." (**1/2) But it was *Holden, Robert Preston, Robert Webber & Richard Mulligan in this famed Hollywood story & reported all took place at Flynn's near legendary Mulholland palace-(Ricky Nelson own it when he was suddenly killed in an airplane crash in 1985) Sadly, "The Tree People" had somehow taken over the place when my tour bus-(5 & 1/2 hour tour!) had to just drove by in 2005)
  16. Just about 4-got. Sooo many young actors were hitting town during that era & so many wanted to be the next *Brando. Including-(though *Spence was his idol though. Even TCM still often airs a marvelous tribute to *Tracy narrated by Burt & to the all-time beautiful music of "Claire de lune") was Burt Reynolds & he & *Brando almost got into it one evening at one of the nightclubs. Burt simply bent over to his table, where others were also seated with him & reached out to shake his hand & according to Burt *Brando's only reply was to not only shake his hand, but said "So, Whats the Problem' Reynolds-(always a violent temper) said he drove up to his Mulholland residence & waited outside there for hrs hoping he'd come home & said he wanted to punch the *Oscar winning actor so hard he'd kill his whole family, but *Marlon never returned home that night
  17. JD even became a pain to *Brando, showing up everywhere he thought he may appear & shoving his way into photos, etc But never yet heard about James Whitmore? I do know he's known as yet another *"Tracy-Deciple' though, plus the fact he looked so much like him) Dean also admired Montgomery Clift-(l920-66) obviously due to the fact that along w/*Marlon they were said to be the first of the Stanilavsky method school of acting. However, most forget that John Garfield-(l9l3-l952) was the very first to hit Tinsel-Town from that school THANK YOU
  18. He may have bee, Raft also chose the other "F. Lawn" in the Hollywood Hills/Burbank same as Keaton as final resting place (TRIVIA: George Raft-(l895-l980) according to *Cagney was the real toughest guy in town & was thee sole person at pal Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel's funeral in 1947 at "Hollywood Forever, par"-(ptefer that term to graveyard or cemetary, less morbid) (NOTE: By the way for true moviebuffs, there is a very good website, with music & narration that covers every cem. in the HOLLYWOOD area-(they even get everywhere inside the famously off-putting & basically known to be rude to fans "Forest Lawn in GLENDALE) (think the name is graveyardstours.com & there is a website I've always saved in favs it covers everything Hollywood related (seeingstars.com) To all, let me know if you have luck finding those two?
  19. WOW, I really thought much more would have some input here, good or negatively?
  20. (*-Indicates the Academy (AMPAS) Award winner) & (A WORK IN PROGRESS) Something also I've long collected from my files & also from my movie books-(THOUGH BY NO MEANS FINSHED & HOPEFULLY JUSTFOR FUN & HOPEFULLY WILL BE OF INTEREST TO FELLOW MOVIEBUFFS OUT THERE?) Performers, filmmakers, critics, writers & cinephiles like us & our personal cinematic heroes/idols/roile models & for some top inspirations>-(in no special order & of course submit anything you want, etc)> *Spencer Tracy & his own idol was *Lionel Barrymore-(& made 4 together)/ *Frank Sinatra's, *Humphrey Bogart-(for those that know to watch, it's easy to see the same mannerisms) & loved Tony Bennett closely over (*(Bing) in music/ Johnny Carson's Jack Benny was by far his lifelong idol & as far as in the movies it was *Jimmy Stewart/ *Barbra Streisand's Fanny Brice/ Bette Midler's Sophie Tucker/ Jackie Gleason's Oliver Hardy &*Jack 0akie/ *Art Carney *James Cagney/ Robert 0sborne's was *William Holden/ Bill Murray also *Holden/ Bill Murray's *Holden & also Alec Baldwin cites *Bill Holden as his hero) Carol Burnett's, *James Stewart & Lucille Ball/ David Letterman, Johnny Carson/ Natalie Wood's *Vivien Leigh-(she even kept a portrait in her living room) *Woody Allen has (4) heroes Bob Hope, *Bogie, *Chaplin & Groucho Marx/ Winona Ryder's *Kate Winslet & Barbara Stanwyck/ *Martin Scorsese's, John Cassavettes & Michael Powell/ Mickey Rooney's idol *Tracy/ Elvis Presley's, Tony Curtis/ *Christopher Walken's, Gene Kelly/ Roger Ebert's Robert Mitchum/ Gene Siskel's *Cagney/ Leonard Maltin *Chaplin/ *Jamie Foxx, Ray Charles/ Harry Connick, Jr., *Sinatra/ Chris Isaak's *Sinatra/ *Shirley MacLaine's heroine Rita Hayworth/ *Ernest Borgnine, *Wallace Beery/ *Jessica Lange, *V. Leigh & *Katharine Hepburn/ *Susan Sarandon's, *Bette Davis/ Lauren Bacall, *Bette Davis/ James Dean's were said to be *Marlon Brando/ Burt Reynolds, *Tracy/ Robert (RJ) Wagner *Spencer Tracy/ Hugh Hefner, *Bogie-(& "The Playboy Mansion" not far from his fmr residence) *Cate Blanchett, *K. Hepburn/ Meg Ryan, Natalie Wood/ Tom Snyder, *Tracy/ Mike Douglas-(tv host), *Spencer Tracy/ *Rod Steiger's, *Paul Muni/ *Jack Nicholson's, *John Huston & *Bogart/ *MorganFreeman';s, *Clint Eastwood/ *Clint Eastwood's idols are *James Stewart, *Gary Cooper & *Cagney/ John Belushi's, *Marlon Brando/ *Meryl Streep's, *Bette Davis/ Glenn Close, *K. Hepburn/ *0rson Welles, *John Ford/ Dick Van Dyke's was as many know Stan Laurel & he calls the rare honor of meeting his idol among his 92yrs greatest times/ *Sean Penn *Robert De Niro/ Madonna's idols & or heroines are still both Marlene Dietrich & Marilyn Monroe/ *Robert Duvall's *Tracy/ Melanie Griffith's Jean Harlow/ Ellen Barkin's is actually *Brando/ Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin was & still is/ Peter Boyle's *Brando-(there is an absolute tremendous bit on SBNL-(l975-80) during it's heyday, called "Dueling Brando's" Boyle vs. Belushi)/ Ernest Hemingway, but don't believe he was his hero, just his concept of the ideal actor in *Gary Cooper/ Richard Gere's *Henry Fonda/ John Carradine when asked, with out question said *H. Fonda was the best ever)/ *Steven Spielberg, *Frank Capra/ *Ron Howard's *Capra/ *Tom Hanks is *James Stewart/ Tony Curtis was Cary Grant & he always claimed he not only joined the Navy during "The War" because of Cary's 1943 "Destination Tokyo' but became an actor because of him too)/ *John Ford's, Harrty Carey, Sr.,/ *John Wayne's, *Ford/ *Anthony Hopkins, *Tracy & his mentor *Laurence 0livier)/ Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly/ Raquel Welch, *K. Hepburn, Jean Arthur & alsoBacall were her heroines/ *Jane & Peter Fonda, *Henry/ Angela Lansbury *Spencer Tracy/ *Charlton Heston's was *Olivier/ *Gregory Peck also chose *Tracy/ *Robert De Niro *Brando/ Jame Caan, *Brando/ Carol Kane, *Brando/ *Goldie Hawn's, *William Holden and Judy Garland/ *Julianne Moore's, Lauren Bacall & *Bette Davis/ *Liza Minnelli's, Judy & Marilyn/ Maureen 0'Sullivan, Greta Garbo-(P.S. Though she mostly & only truly thought *Tracy was thee A #1, *Kate Hepburn also admired Garbo of the ladies)/ / Don Rickles literally worshipped *Sinatra!/ Ed McMahon, W.C. Fields/ Liz Smith, *Ginger Rogers/ Brian De Palma, Hitchcock/ Walter Hill's, his mentor Sam Peckinpah/ & AS I WROTE "A WORK IN PROGRESS" from the files-(established at first in 1982-) because I'm always finding stars who mostly admired certain stars & or gave them their original motivation, etc Ben Mankiewicz always says he wanted to be Steve McQueen, same as I did from about the age of 10 to 15. He also looks up to *Lee Marvin/ William Conrad' s *Tracy/ Charles Durning, *Cagney-(anybody recall the brief in between TCM segment "Paing By Light?" Durning of course painted his 1 & only hero & inspiration to even becom4e an actor *Jimmy Cagney, even stating he copied his acting style at first// *Sissy Spacek's on it was *Gregory "Atticus Finch" P{eck & Ving Rhames said *Bogart was always his hero/ *George Clooney, *Spencer Tracy/ Laura Dern, Carole Lombard/ *Geena Davis chooses 2 as her idols>Lombard & James (Maitland) Stewart/ *Michael Caine always also chooses two as his heroes, idols & role models>*Tracy & Cary Grant/ Sharon Stone's, *Davis, Bow & Ava/ Jim Carrey, Buster Keaton/ Billy Crystal, B. Keaton & Edward G./ *Tarentino's, Cary Grant/ Liam Neeson, *"The King of Hollywood: Clark Gable"-(even did a nice TCM docu on him from his fmr Encin Ranch/ Larry King, *Frank Sinatra/ 0prah's, Harpo Marx-(which she idolized so much since childhood, her name is hers just spelled backwards Don't think he ever got t meet him though, very unlikely given he died in 1964)/ Will Smith's *Sidney Poitier/ *Robin Williams had many heroes but Jonathan Winters was his main man/ *Richard Dreyfuss, *Tracy & among chief reasons he wanted to do *Spielberg's remake of his 1944 "A Guy Named Joe" in l989 "Always"/ *Shirley MacLaine always said her mom named her Shirley in honor of Shirley Temple/ Same goes for Joan Collins & *Joan Crawford/ MikeTyson's is still Judy Garland, of all choices for the fmr heavyweight boxing champ!? He says he just worships her/ *Faye Dunaway, *Joan Crawford/ James Agee-(arguably the all-time finest film critic & was also a scripter "A. Queen" & "Night of the Hunter" he just thought *Charlie Chaplin was a god!)/ Think already hit on this one, but Steve McQueen didn't really seem to have a hero in the biz, but always felt a massive competition vs. anything *Paul Newman did/ *John Huston his *Oscar winning dad *Walter Huston/ Pat 0'Brien, *Spencer/ & Michel Keaton, Travolta & Michael J. Fox all easily cite *Cagney as their idol, matter of fact around 1996 or before, TCM aired a special on *Jim, hosted & at WB's by Michael J. & he flat out said when other kids of his generation wanted to be JD, he wanted to be *James (Francis) Cagney)/ & though *MacLaine was named after her mother's fav. Temple, her own movie idol is Rita Hayworth)/ *BillyWilder's, Garbo & Lubitsch/ *CHER's, *Ginger Rogers/ *Reese Witherspoon's, has (3) role models>*Holly Hunter, *MacLaine & Debra Winger)/ Chazz Palmenteri even got to do 1 of those TCM tributes to his lifelong idol: Edward G./ James Bacon, *Tracy/ Stanley Kramer also *Tracy/ & I 4-got to include McQueen's all-time hero is *John Wayne! He used to tell kids what a pro is, look at *"The Duke"/ Carl Reiner's, Sid Caesar & *Mel Brooks/ Eddie Murphy's, *Chaplin-(matter of fact he used to have a large painting of him in his living room1 & Richard Pryor)/ Jennifer Jason-Leigh's, *Brando and Stanwyck/ Lawrence Kasdan, McQueen/ Nick Nolte's idol was always *Brando/ & STEVE MARTIN???-(for now)/ Dan Aykroyd, Jack webb/ Jerry Seinfeld's, "Abbott & Costello"-(always saying his inspriration for his already legendary tv series-(l990-98) was the duo's rarely recalled & often hilarious own tv show-(l952-54)/ Wayne Newton, *Sinatra/ Vic Damone's, *Sinatra-(on L. King's tribute show when he died in May of '98, Damone was among his guests & said in the beginning all he wanted to be was *Frank Sinatra, but soon realized he couldn't be & did his own thing)/ James Coburn, Bruce Lee who was also along w/both McQueen & James Garner, students of Lee_)/ & Cary grant when asked always without pause said "The Mick" Mickey Rooney was the most talented in Hollywood)/ & how can anybody forget the tragic Andy Kaufman. His obvious hero was Elvis, as was Kurt Russell's & may even *Cage?)
  21. I'm well aware there are several motion pictures that either celebrate & or have something to do with (THE 4th of JULY) Most notably of course is> 1942' tremendous "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (Warner Bros.) 1972's "1776"-(unfortunately some genius got the idea when we were only about age 10 or so to take us to see this musical as a "Field Day thing?" Many were snoring throughout. It may be well-made, but us kids were too young to appreciate uit & for me I was yet to become a bona-fide moviebuff-(l979) & all I then cared about in the movies was "The King of Movie Cool: Steve McQueen"-(l930-l980) "Drums Along the Mohawk" (l939) is obviously another "The Patriot" (2000) ($113m.) (***) "Born on the 4th of July" (l989) ($81m.) (***1/2)-(deservedly won *O. Stone his 2nd BD *Oscar) & I'm certain I've neglected to list many, so please do?
  22. Man, man, o, man, he certainly was a popular guy, huh One of the few debits I can think of in regard to our late & beloved TCM Host-(I fear, how our network is changing & not for the better either) Mr. 0sborne may have been the beginning of the end of Turner Classic Movies??? But, Lucille Ball-(l9ll-l989) is well known to really give him a boost & somewhat discover Robert. 1 thing she was way off on-(& I KNOW MANY WILL BE UPSET ABOUT THIS) But, I've seen all of his performances & more then once too & unfortunately Robert was no *Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant, at least in that dept THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME! (P.S. This is somewhat important as well. Does anyone know or know of MR. GEORGE BURDELL?> He owned a companion pc website to this one (classicmovieguide.com) & we used to correspond a bit-(2006/07 or so was last I heard of the guy?) He even wrote a story on his visit to the station in GA-(Atlanta) described Robert & how they had to break for such & such while filming George didn't get to go on the air, he was just a lucky visitor one day
  23. Just glanced over a topic-(think it was indiwire.com) where they rated the worst to be best releases td of Christopher Nolan.
