Who are the "they" you refer to that keep showing clips of Mel Gibson's PASSION OF THE CHRIST?  I've never seen clips of it anywhere since my only view of it 15 years ago.

Personally, I thought Gibson went over the top with how the Romans behaved while carrying out the whipping segments.  I never recalled any mention in both confirmation Bible studies or world History classes that indicated that was the way that punishment was carried out.   But, this isn't a thread about critiquing that movie, so.....

Because it was the first movie of it's kind I ever saw, I still have more of a fondness for the  Jeffery Hunter/ Nicholas Ray version of KING OF KINGS ('61) .

And too, of course, the  '77 TV mini-series JESUS OF NAZARETH.  THEN comes THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD('65).  But, that's just the religious fare....

Sadly, THE EASTER PARADE('48) is the only NON religious Easter movie I can think of, so I went to WIKI to see if a list of what they have could jog my memory.  And SURPRISE!

It's as oddball as Christmas movies, as they list COOL HAND LUKE('67) among their "drama" Easter movies!  :o   The rest were just animated flicks that I never saw....

As I replied constantly on Fox News, but it's to get people to $pay$ for it on it's sister station

I would watch anything not having to do with the Bible.  Easter Parade is my pick for Easter. I'll probably watch the Charlie Brown Easter cartoon. According to Wikipedia, Kiss Me Deadly and Rebel Without a Cause are set around Easter, those seem like fine options to me. I don't recall Easter mentioned in either of those films, but I'll go with it.

Are you serious about Wikipedia listing those 2 as Easter flix or even close to it?

I always remember JD saying Happy Easter to his parents in the police station

That weeper of a soap opera Steel Magnolias has a plethora of holidays from which to choose, including Easter, which closes out the film.

saw it when released & somewhat recall that ending, somewhat

I'm almost inclined to agree with Jake 😄  Nevertheless, while not specifically Easter, the Song of Bernadette (!943)  is both religious and inspirational.  Maybe this also belongs over on the SOUNDTRACKS thread, but is submitted for consideration  -   Alfred Newman the composer did win an Oscar for it.

a very good one still (***1/2) & was expected back then to sweep the Oscars-(obviously CASABLANCA upset it though) The very first G. globes for that yr went to BERNADETTE instead

There are a few people that make me laugh, but who needs the headache of listing them here ON A CLASSIC MOVIE WEBSITE MESSAGE BOARD. I’m not in the mood to be vilified just because I find certain people funny. BTW, the only modern movies I watch regularly are comedies.

Okay, I’ll list one. Melissa McCarthy

like her a lot uh   she's now on forbe's annual highest pd actresses list, no 1 this past year thought was scarlett Johansson and was up for a s. actress Oscar for bridesmaids

Fox News is constant for over a week, but you have to pay extra for their Fox News Channel or something like that   I know it's never aired

Not just it's controversy-(despite making so much $$$) but a releasing agency called New Market first handled it & maybe still does?

ever see his powerhouse on every level APOCALYTO? They spoke in a language now long gone

I didn't and never heard of him until this film. 😂 The next thing I know, you'll be telling me George Sanders and Tom Conway were brothers!

On Seinfeld my favorite episode was the one with TIERNEY & for anyone that's seen RESERVOIR DIGS (l992) they may recall how Tim Roth's character escribed him THE THING from the comic book

Reason he was never in another Seinfeld according to Jerry is LAWRENCE was constantly stealing things

  9. As I had previously asked folks on here does anyone have tcm on demand-(spectrum)? Anyhow, the vastly always underrated 1959 ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW (***1/2) is on it again

First saw it in the late '80's late a night, now it seems to be catching on a bit thesedays

This type of thing comes up in here often, and the overall feeling is....

Like movies in general, music, and comedy, it's all subjective.   Personally( as it is with all others) I never thought he was "great"(another subjective thing) but he did have a good comic timing and delivery, and is(and was) beloved by more than one generation,

    thanks

  11. In my very first movie book in l980 LIFE GOES TO THE MOVIES there is a lg page shot of him in this classic stating "Spencer Tracy Gives an Epic Performance All by Himself" unquote & if you read old reviews in books critics actually thought his work in FORD'S IRISH politico THE LAST HURRAH was greater & would win him that 3rd Best Actor Academy Award, It's close for me but must vote for SANTIAGO

big hemingway fan ...  seen and read the book ... more than once …

as you probably already know HEMGWAY truly said he disliked the final version? Stating it was the work of a fat, rich, lazy, hollywood actor-(his ideal was COOPER) but a true story to, he goaded a then on the wagon TRACY into getting drunk while still in Cuba, so they obviously did, so much so they burned down a bar!

He liked FOR WHOM THEBELL TOLLS best of all his adaptations, as all did in that movie-(I. BERGMAN was shocked she got more fame for CASABLANCA & not that one)

(QUESTION> Ever see the l990 version of OLD MAN... made for tv?)

gods and generals is maxwell's  presenting the South's point of view of history more so than gettysburg ....  but as is said ... history is written by the victors ... sheen came across as a goofball to me ... duball much better ...

thanks again, which epic do you rate better by the way?

Personally DUVALL in my opinion is still among the top 3 greatest actors alive   My mom got to meet and escort him once when she was security at the long gone PLAYBOY CASINO/HOTEL in ATLANTIC CITY in l980

though we split on sheen vs duvall in this role

You'd be surprised at DUVALL'S own opinion's of his films He only thinks NETWORK ok as 1 example & he wasn't as awestruck by BRANDO as the others were because THE GREAT TRACY & CHAPLIN are his idols, plus he'd already worked with MARLON in THE CHASE (l966)

Maybe you know his favorite role? It's LONESOME DOVE

  14. I'm not religious at all, but still celebrate things   & they are constantly showing the clips of MEL GIBSON'S epic & arguably the most violent film I have yet to see 2004's PASSION OF THE CHRIST ($374m. in this country alone) I still think it fantastic filmmaking, no matter how awful the violence its, technically The ACADEMY obviously didn't want to touch it that yr earning not 1 single nomination though It's never on tv in these 15/16yrs but Fox special channel-(you have to pay extra$) will be airing it & don't think it had to do with MAD MEL as the media dubbed him, because his very good (***1/2) HACKSAW RIDGE won a couple & they nommed him his 2nd time for BD Gold

PASSION reminded me of when SCORSESE'S then ultra controversial l988 LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST ($8m.) (***1/2) opened.

    MEL'S a obviously a far better director then actor, look at BRAVEHEART (l995) ($71m.) & it's 5 victories

& did yet another very, very powerful film nobody seemed to see APOCALYPTO?

& his debut was fine (***) THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE (l993) ($55m.)

Anybody have a viewpoint on this or other Easter flix?   Guess the network will be reairing the flat (**) GODSPELL

    THANK YOU

  15. I know people love it watching from home, not me though, will always prefer GOING TO THE THEATRE!

Scorsese had more Oscars & $Box-0ffice$ backfire on him with his gangster epic THE IRISHMAN It went 0 for 10 & made nada at the $B.O.$

& when it was first released many were hailing it among the greatest ever made & by anyone

    THE TWO=-POPES was another example

But, unfortunately we don't have that choice, huh

Last release I went to, was in no hurry & tried to go to several others first because given it's $B.O.$ knew it would stay around was SW 9 (**1/2) & my gut told me even on that day they were gonna start closing the theaters

    Before that went to l9l7
