The 1950's was truly special & to me THE HONEYMOONERS-CLASSIC 39) (1955-56) (CBS) & THE LOST EPISODES OF THE HONEYMOONERS (l952-57) (CBS)
Though tv movies/mini-series starting in the '70's are tremendous ala LONESOME DOVE,etc
-
By far Tinsel-Town has covered THE WAR (WW11) the most of course
I already cited my ranking just in my overall opinion of top ten war-cinema, below are my picks on WW2
*Schindler's List
Saving Pvt. Ryan
*From Here to Eternity
The Great Escape
& The Longest Day
& a ton more

Depends whether or not you consider a "war picture" to be contained TO a particular war instead of the periods BEFORE the war, DURING the war and AFTER.
And PATTON('70) won best picture, but is listed as a "biography", but IMHO, since it only covers George Patton's life during WWII and not his entire life, I never thought of it as a biography, but a damned fine war movie.
Sepiatone
To Sepiatone, that's exactly the point I tried to make with *GWTW Schindler & The Great Escape itself doesn't contain many battle scenes either
Even Birth of a Nation had epic battle scenes in 1915
A HINT (11) HAVE WON TO DATE
thanx

Like with last yrs Roma never in 91yrs has a film taken both Best Film & Best Foreign Film

When I heard they were even making THE IRISHMAN & that Pacino had been cast as Jimmy Hoffa I immediately thought on is 9th nomination Ollywood would be dying to give Al a 2nd Academy Award, then the annual pre-Oscar awards started & most then went to Pesci & now obviously Pitt has the momentum, just goes to show you whats on paper is not the end,etc

(TRIVIA: After All Quiet on the Western Front (l929-30) winning the Academy Award for Best Film how many outright war pix have also taken Hollywoods biggest prize & is Gone With the Wind a war movie?

Know this was on a few nights back but had to say congrats to tcm for re-airing the long version/directors cut of Leone's masterful l984 gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America
The chopped up version released in 1984 was 139 minutes, but his full version was 227 minutes, even l0onger then Gone With the wind
I went to it that May & it makes no sense chopped up as they did
& I think this hurt it's Oscar chances that year, not 1 single nom Especially for Ennio Morricone's all-time great score and a companion piece to his 1969 Once Upon a Time in the West music as well

To Jake, have you seen it yet?
-
A mistake, this was meant for General instead
-
I have not seen the Nielsen ratings for either show-(Jakeem probably posted the Golden Globe rating by now) but who caught either or both?
-
Thank you, who saw either Breaker Morant or Gallipoli?

The South Korean hit "Parasite" became the first international film to win the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The 26th annual SAG ceremony was held Sunday night and televised live by sister cable stations TNT and TBS.
Since the SAG prizes are awarded for acting, "Parasite" director Bong Joon-ho watched from the audience as his cast members accepted the top movie award.
"Although the title is 'Parasite,' I think the story is about co-existence and how we can all live together," said actor Song Kang-ho, who spoke through an interpreter. "But to be honored with the best ensemble award, it occurs to me that maybe we haven't created such a bad movie. I'm so honored to receive this award in front of such amazing actors that I admire. But he has never won an Academy Award after 14 previous nominations. He has been honored with an Oscar bid for the 15th time for his original score for "1917," which marks his seventh collaboration with director Sam Mendes.
Newman's father was the legendary composer Alfred Newman (1901-1970), who created the 20th Century-Fox fanfare and earned 45 Academy Award nominations. He won nine times.
Alfred's brother Lionel (1916-1989), who scored more than 200 films and television productions, was nominated for 11 Oscars and shared a statuette with Lennie Hayton for their work on the 1970 musical "Hello Dolly." He also co-created the catchy theme song for the NBC series "Daniel Boone," which ran from 1964 to 1970.
Thomas Newman's brother David also is a composer who has scored more than 100 films.
Adding to Thomas' anxiety about the upcoming Oscar night is the fact that he'll be competing against another Newman heavyweight. His cousin Randy, a two-time Academy Award winner, is nominated in the Original Score category for his musical contributions to the drama "Marriage Story." He also is nominated in the Best Original Song category for "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" from "Toy Story 4."
Randy Newman knows from personal experience how frustrating Oscar hopes can be. He went winless 15 times before he finally won the 2001 Best Original Song award for "If I Didn't Have You" from the animated film "Monsters, Inc." He triumphed again nine years later with "We Belong Together" from the 2010 animated sequel "Toy Story 3."
Thomas Newman is hoping for his first Academy Award victory after 15th nominationsAs for his work on "1917," Thomas Newman knew from the start that he would have to make adjustments. The World War I drama is shot as if it was the story of a continuous series of events.
"I knew going in that this was going to be a first time for everyone, because of this present-tense thing," Newman told Steve Pond of The Wrap. "I had to constantly be thinking about what worked and what didn’t — and why it worked when it did, and why it didn’t work when it didn’t."
He added: "Any time I tried to write music that commented on what was happening, it didn’t make the movie as exciting. I had to stay in the present tense and not try to outsell or outmaneuver what you were seeing on screen."
Here is a list of Newman's overall Oscar nominations:
- "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). Best Original Score.
- "Little Women" (1994). Best Original Score.
- "Unstrung Heroes" (1995). Best Original Music or Comedy Score.
- "American Beauty" (1999). Best Original Score.
- "Road to Perdition" (2002). Best Original Score.
- "Finding Nemo" (2003). Best Original Score.
- "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (2004). Best Original Score.
- "The Good German" (2006). Best Original Score.
- "WALL-E" (2008). Best Original Score.
- "WALL-E" (2008). Best Original Song (for "Down to Earth," shared with Peter Gabriel).
- "Skyfall" (2012). Best Original Score.
- "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013). Best Original Score.
- "Bridge of Spies" (2015). Best Original Score.
- "Passengers" (2016). Best Original Score.
- "1917" (2019). Best Original Score.

To Jake, is this a top 5 or 10 question or just our #1>
My personal favorite to date is a tie between Ennio Morricone's 1969 0nce Upon a Time in the West and his 1984 Once Upon a Time in America (directors cut)
Sure you have seen how AFI American Film Institute voted in the non televised survey & concert
1 Star Wars (l977) (J. Williams) lead barely over GWTW (Max Steiner)

I don't really have a specific favorite soundtrack, but this classic by Erich Wolfgang Korngold would be in my Top 3. An Oscar win and well-deserved!!!
Main title from The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Also...
Theme from Zulu by John Barry
And...
I'm a big fan of all the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films, and I find myself humming this tune a lot from Carefree. ❤️
AFI in 2006 special survey from The Hollywood Bowl & with John Williams conducting voted Robin Hood all-time #11th greatest score

I feel like the music score for Mississippi Burning is underrated. Great movie about a sad and scary time in American History.
I agree Trevor Jones pounding score was very strong He also had an even more powerful score for 1985's RUNAWAY TRAIN
