That it was. It's very short American theatre run was from the ill-fated AFD, the company started by ITC's Lord Lew Grade. The studio hit it big with The Muppet Movie and had a critical hit with Inside Moves, but was mostly saddled with things like Raise the Titanic, Saturn 3, The Jazz Singer, and Can't Stop the Music. They ended after only two or three years in early 1981. The movies (either from ITC or EMI) that might have saved their hide were put out at Universal: On Golden Pond, The Great Muppet Caper, Frances, Sophie's Choice, Cross Creek, and Tender Mercies.

One upped even. In this town, they have an oldies radio station. Most of what they have on the air waves is from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Sometimes, if you go into some local stores, they play the station. Anyway, the one day within the last few weeks I was shocked when they played Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You". That cover version was released in late 1992. If they start playing some other songs around that time (like two personal favorites of mine, the Duran Duran songs "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World", I might nearly faint)

Actually, Paramount lost the rights toDeath on the Nile; they are now with StudioCanal. it is a great cast. Angela Lansbury steals her scenes, Ustinov and David Niven shine, Mia Farrow, Maggie Smith and Bette excel. I think its even better than Orient Express. Now could StudioCanal also give us the mirror Crack'd? It was Liz Taylor's last big role (and she was very good) and Kim Novak clearly was enjoying herself as a catty movie star, running off with all of her scenes and stealing the show.

With Monday we have movies from the three birthday Ms-Monty, Mae and Maureen, before we get to the fourth birthday actor and star of the Month Robert De Niro. Tuesday is devoted to the monthly spotlight, revolution in films, with films on revolution in Cuba, France, the Spanish Civil War, 1968, the Russian Civil War, the English revolution, Vietnam and the seventies. Then we get to the highlight of the week, musical premieres from A to Z. It has Disney animated films! It has Best Picture nominees (All That Jazz)! It has notorious flops (At Long Last Love)! It has dramas where the characters do a lot of singing (Distant Voices Still Lives, Lagaan)! It has comedies where the characters do a lot of singing (Help! Monty Python and the Meaning of Life)! It has operas (Moses and Aron, Khovanshchina)! (Interestingly Shoskatovich was nominated for an oscar for the last film. He, and Duke Ellington, lost to West Side Story.) Anyway, my lists includes dance films (Mammame)! It includes communist musicals, with nudity (Red Psalm)! It includes concert films (Stop Making Sense)! It includes documentaries (Let it be)! It includes a Bugs Bunny cartoon to fill a fifteen minute gap! Surprisingly very few films had to be included just to fit all of the letters. Also on Thursday evening we have guest programmer LawrenceA has seven films, including six pre-Code films. For the end of Saturday, it was a bit tricky to find someone to hang a theme on. There don't appear to be that many Hollywood people born on August 22: names like David Chase, Honor Blackman, Cindy Williams and Valerie Harper are more associated with television. So I concluded with three sci-fi films with an absence of overoptimism for Ray Bradbury's birthday.

Looks like I can finally get around to some of those few Bette films I haven't seen! That said though, I've already seen over 50 with her in them.

Well, one of the films that is new is being discussed is set in 1969 and features tons of references to films made around that time. And I feel we are all a bit interested in what studios are up to, and other things. (I know I was pleased as punch to find a site with old Siskel and Ebert shows from the late 70s early 80s and was tempted to share some here) We might be a classic film board, but I don't feel we need to stop at a certain time. If something truly astonishes us, we should talk about it. Doesn't matter the era. And I also feel that some of the more recent post-studio system decades (70s, 80s, 90s) are an era most of us are familiar with and I feel that many hold a soft spot for those times.

i kind of have to agree. My predicament with most of them is that either I already have copies of some [the more mainstream ones] or they just aren't the highest priority of things to watch. I would like Secrets and Lies though. I also had to edit the list, because I missed one title: 2000's Bamboozled, Spike Lee's audacious blackface satire. Lee himself has confirmed it.

That's the thing, I actually liked Lost Horizon. it has this terrible reputation and yes it didn't gel with the majority of films made in the early 70s, but seeing it out of that 70s context makes things a bit easier for the film. Taken out of the context of the time, there is something appealing and likable about it and the cast handles many scenes quite well. And it always held interest.

Tis Liv Ullman day, and yes, i set out to see some of her lesser known English-language films, so yes, i saw Zandy's Bride, The Abdication, and, yes, Lost Horizon.

I only saw it through all the way once, although I looked at some scenes when it was available of Showtime not too long ago. In a way, I am kind of scared to revisit it, because my first viewing of it was perfect. With the exception of ET (where I was a basket case for the last 40 minutes), this film gave me the strongest emotional reaction of any film I've seen, and its still a film I'm haunted by. Everyone is on the top of their game here. A few months ago, i tried to compose some of my thoughts about the film into a review, 3 years after having seen it....I'm reprinting it here.

At least this one came with Joel McCrea Marie Windsor was among the Island Women The Vikings was an adventure epic with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, and Ernest Borgnine Tony Curtis was back again fighting in the war with Frank Sinatra in Kings Go Forth. Natalie Wood was along for the ride. The Lone Ranger returned Wink of an Eye was a small comedy Brigitte Bardot was big at the time, so La Parisienne was a smashing success of an import The Lost Missile was a sci-fi film with Robert Loggia A dash of horror.... God's Little Acre was a controversial hit. Menace in the Night was a noir from England Alec Guinness was excellent as a curmudgeonly painter in the wry and offbeat The Horse's Mouth. Meanwhile Susan Hayward had her own (Oscar-winning) triumph with I Want to Live, a powerful and gripping story of a real-life woman doomed in a tale of law and disorder. Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis Jr appeared in an African-American version of the melodrama Anna Lucasta Back to crime with The Mugger Victor Mature starred in China Doll, a cinematic return for director Frank Borzage Lonelyhearts served as the film debut for Maureen Stapleton (Oscar-nominated here) and starred Montgomery Clift, Robert Ryan, Dolores Hart, and Myrna Loy And Separate Tables was another all star production (David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Gladys Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Wendy Hiller, Rita Hayworth, Cathleen nesbitt, Rod Taylor). This one was sensitively handled and was one of UA's best of the year. Niven and Hiller won Oscars. American International Pictures The Screaming Skull started the year off with horror Sci-Fi had its turn next Then it was time for the air force with John Agar and Audrey Totter Mike Conners was the star of the war film Suicide Battalion The Cool and the Crazy told of troubled youth Daddy-O was another tale of youth, but had one important note. The legendary film composer John Williams began his movie career here with this film. Dragstrip Riot mixed the youth with murder. Connie Stevens had a supporting part Attack of the Puppet People, now that's some title. 9 Years before Faye Dunaway had her say, Dorothy Provine played Bonnie Parker Charles Bronson was playing a gangster as well Straight out of Juvie hall back to the cars again And then back to horror War of the Colossal Beast found a truly large monster on display Wartime called... twice in a row Sign of changing times; Robert Vaughn went from starring in Teenage Caveman to becoming an Oscar nominee in just one year More horror with Night of the Blood beast This was seemingly only a must for those into beach films, despite the fantasy setting Uh. too much... Arachnophobia had a good reason for forming.... the year closed with another war film
