I think it was originally produced by EMI Films.

That it was. It's very short American theatre run was from the ill-fated AFD, the company started by ITC's Lord Lew Grade. The studio hit it big with The Muppet Movie and had a critical hit with Inside Moves, but was mostly saddled with things like Raise the Titanic, Saturn 3, The Jazz Singer, and Can't Stop the Music. They ended after only two or three years in early 1981. The movies (either from ITC or EMI) that might have saved their hide were put out at Universal: On Golden Pond, The Great Muppet Caper, Frances, Sophie's Choice, Cross Creek, and Tender Mercies.

These days "oldies" music (in contrast) seems to be the 80s.

One upped even. In this town, they have an oldies radio station. Most of what they have on the air waves is from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Sometimes, if you go into some local stores, they play the station. Anyway, the one day within the last few weeks I was shocked when they played Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You". That cover version was released in late 1992. If they start playing some other songs around that time (like two personal favorites of mine, the Duran Duran songs "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World", I might nearly faint)

Actually, Paramount lost the rights toDeath on the Nile; they are now with StudioCanal. it is a great cast. Angela Lansbury steals her scenes, Ustinov and David Niven shine, Mia Farrow, Maggie Smith and Bette excel. I think its even better than Orient Express. Now could StudioCanal also give us the mirror Crack'd? It was Liz Taylor's last big role (and she was very good) and Kim Novak clearly was enjoying herself as a catty movie star, running off with all of her scenes and stealing the show.

Programming Notes: Sunday begins with a double feature taking place underground in the subways of New York City. After a repeat of Kiss Me Deadly, away we go into an afternoon salute to The Great One, Jackie Gleason. Sunday primetime features the work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. From there, we catch up with Douglas Fairbanks in The Iron Mask on Silent Sunday Night. TCM Imports this week features the lovely Silvana Mangano in two Italian classics.

Monday takes us on a sightseeing tour of 1960’s New York City. Keep your eyes open for stops at the United Nations Building, Rockefeller Center, Washington Square Park and more! The late afternoon takes a turn with some thrilling films from William Wyler. You’ll never see Terence Stamp the same way again! Join us for primetime with jazz pianist, Herbie Hancock as he discusses a lineup of movies scored by jazz legends, including himself.

Tuesday begins with a four film tribute to Ronald Colman’s silent film days. Among the highlights are the original versions of Stella Dallas and Beau Geste. The afternoon leads us into a trio of films directed by Arthur Hiller. The lineup includes the work of Neil Simon, Paddy Chayefsky, and Erich Segal. On primetime, the giggles pour out with our Star of the Month, Richard Widmark. Follow along as we watch Widmark’s first five films and enjoy our introduction to a screen legend. Just don’t go near any staircases.

Wednesday is an all day salute to the consummate, James Mason. Mason had a diverse and long career and we will see his range throughout the day. Primetime brings us a special tribute to Federico Fellini as we celebrate the centennial of his birth. The month’s tribute will take us through Fellini’s career, starting with the early films that established his legend.

Thursday will start off with the classic From Here to Eternity. From there, the rest of the day will consist of films featuring one of the six stars of From Here to Eternity. Primetime introduces our special spotlight for the month, Edgar Allan Poe Award winning films. This will be a night of mystery, fun, and suspense!

Friday features a lineup of comical capers. From Alec Guinness to Peter Sellers, Michael Caine to Robert Redford, this will be a day filled with laughs. Friday night features a lineup of movies chosen by Special Guest Programmer, Lonesome Polecat. From musicals to mysteries, you’ll be singing and sleuthing all night long! That is until you enter the Underground. Join us for a double feature featuring Terence Stamp. While Terence is known for being a face of the 1960s, his later career featured a wide array of film characters. This week we are looking at two films where Stamp plays the role of a gangster.

All for one and one for all! Saturday is a day of swashbucklers. Find a sword and revel in the adventures of Edmond Dantes, Robin Hood, d’Artagnan, and more all day long! On the Essentials, we look at one of the greatest films ever made, The Conformist. Absorb the beauty of the 1940s and enjoy the wonderful performances from the cast. Stick around for another film of Jean-Louis Trintignant’s, A Man and a Woman. Noir Alley this week features a film from 1948 with a fantastic title, Kiss the Blood Off My Hands. We start off with two movies for birthday girl Lesley Ann Warren. There's also yesterday's noir alley repeat. We then have the programming challenge of four early Hollywood silent movies, which I decided to border with silent films from Germany, Britain, France, Russia and Japan. With Monday we have movies from the three birthday Ms-Monty, Mae and Maureen, before we get to the fourth birthday actor and star of the Month Robert De Niro. Tuesday is devoted to the monthly spotlight, revolution in films, with films on revolution in Cuba, France, the Spanish Civil War, 1968, the Russian Civil War, the English revolution, Vietnam and the seventies.

Then we get to the highlight of the week, musical premieres from A to Z. It has Disney animated films! It has Best Picture nominees (All That Jazz)! It has notorious flops (At Long Last Love)! It has dramas where the characters do a lot of singing (Distant Voices Still Lives, Lagaan)! It has comedies where the characters do a lot of singing (Help! Monty Python and the Meaning of Life)! It has operas (Moses and Aron, Khovanshchina)! (Interestingly Shoskatovich was nominated for an oscar for the last film. He, and Duke Ellington, lost to West Side Story.) Anyway, my lists includes dance films (Mammame)! It includes communist musicals, with nudity (Red Psalm)! It includes concert films (Stop Making Sense)! It includes documentaries (Let it be)! It includes a Bugs Bunny cartoon to fill a fifteen minute gap! Surprisingly very few films had to be included just to fit all of the letters.

Also on Thursday evening we have guest programmer LawrenceA has seven films, including six pre-Code films. For the end of Saturday, it was a bit tricky to find someone to hang a theme on. There don't appear to be that many Hollywood people born on August 22: names like David Chase, Honor Blackman, Cindy Williams and Valerie Harper are more associated with television. So I concluded with three sci-fi films with an absence of overoptimism for Ray Bradbury's birthday.

Well, one of the films that is new is being discussed is set in 1969 and features tons of references to films made around that time. And I feel we are all a bit interested in what studios are up to, and other things. (I know I was pleased as punch to find a site with old Siskel and Ebert shows from the late 70s early 80s and was tempted to share some here) We might be a classic film board, but I don't feel we need to stop at a certain time. If something truly astonishes us, we should talk about it. Doesn't matter the era. And I also feel that some of the more recent post-studio system decades (70s, 80s, 90s) are an era most of us are familiar with and I feel that many hold a soft spot for those times.

i kind of have to agree. My predicament with most of them is that either I already have copies of some [the more mainstream ones] or they just aren't the highest priority of things to watch. I would like Secrets and Lies though. I also had to edit the list, because I missed one title: 2000's Bamboozled, Spike Lee's audacious blackface satire. Lee himself has confirmed it.

That's the thing, I actually liked Lost Horizon. it has this terrible reputation and yes it didn't gel with the majority of films made in the early 70s, but seeing it out of that 70s context makes things a bit easier for the film. Taken out of the context of the time, there is something appealing and likable about it and the cast handles many scenes quite well. And it always held interest.

I only saw it through all the way once, although I looked at some scenes when it was available of Showtime not too long ago. In a way, I am kind of scared to revisit it, because my first viewing of it was perfect. With the exception of ET (where I was a basket case for the last 40 minutes), this film gave me the strongest emotional reaction of any film I've seen, and its still a film I'm haunted by. Everyone is on the top of their game here. A few months ago, i tried to compose some of my thoughts about the film into a review, 3 years after having seen it....I'm reprinting it here.

The Fisher King is one of those films that, for me, at least hit a true nerve and went straight for the heart. Along with ET, this is one of the films I cried at the most. Perhaps, it is more poignant now then it was in 1991, since Robin Williams' tragic passing in 2014 only added another layer of poignancy to the film.

Williams is indeed fantastic in a part that balances both his manic comic side and his tender, heartbreaking dramatic one, and it is probably the best performance he ever gave. But Jeff bridges is as good, if not better, in one of the best performances of his own career. He has to manage quite an arc, going from a disreputable jerk at the beginning, through self-loathing loner, through penitant trying to make amends, to brief reversion back through heartless jerk, to becoming a decent individual through true and deep redemption. It's quite a ride, and he manages all the changes perfectly, making it feel natural and never forced; this is one of the best leading actor performances of the 90s.

Which is not to overlook the three sublime supporting performances. Mercedes Ruehl won a richly deserved Oscar as a strong, witty woman breaking inside from years of being worn down by Bridges whom she loves regardless. She balances humor and tenderness and she is always astonishing to watch, and I wish her great talent was seen in more films. Amanda Plummer, as the object of William's affection, is beautifully tender as well, so shy and insecure. The scene where Williams walks her home is a great scene, one of the most romantic and touching I've seen. And then there's Michael Jeter as the homeless singer who possibly has AIDS. He steals the show in his earlier scenes with strong humor, and then is astonishing in his final scene, a scene that still cuts like a knife in my memory as being one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever put to celluloid.

The whole film is filled with astonishing scenes and camera angles: the way the radio studio at the beginning looks like a prison cell, the unnerving red knight, the gorgeous mass waltz at Grand Central Station, the unique dinner, the harrowing flashback to William's past.... It's rare for such a film to offer so much but there you go. This is a film that is admittedly not for everyone (the reviews from 1991 show that), but for anybody willing to go along with it, it is a journey they will remember forever.
