How true. Ben M. can be quoted as saying 30s/40s/50s are TCM's bread and butter. 1969 is not too current for me. Maybe 1989. Someone younger than I will say 1999, etc.
These days "oldies" music (in contrast) seems to be the 80s.
One upped even. In this town, they have an oldies radio station. Most of what they have on the air waves is from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Sometimes, if you go into some local stores, they play the station. Anyway, the one day within the last few weeks I was shocked when they played Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You". That cover version was released in late 1992. If they start playing some other songs around that time (like two personal favorites of mine, the Duran Duran songs "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World", I might nearly faint)

Death on the Nile is Paramount, but TCM has shown it in the past. Too bad.
Great cast.
Actually, Paramount lost the rights toDeath on the Nile; they are now with StudioCanal. it is a great cast. Angela Lansbury steals her scenes, Ustinov and David Niven shine, Mia Farrow, Maggie Smith and Bette excel. I think its even better than Orient Express. Now could StudioCanal also give us the mirror Crack'd? It was Liz Taylor's last big role (and she was very good) and Kim Novak clearly was enjoying herself as a catty movie star, running off with all of her scenes and stealing the show.

A few notes: Salutes to several Hollywood greats including: cinematographer Joseph LaShelle, Gene Hackman, Lionel Barrymore, Fred Zinnemann and Eve Arden (one of my all-time favorites) can be found in Schedule #41. The wonderful and ever-reliable James Whitmore is my SOTM and my guest programmer is Frau Blucher from “Young Frankenstein. ” Her film selections include: “The Boyfriend” (because “He was her boyfriend,”) "The Violin Player" (since she is so gifted on that instrument) the original Frankenstein film (she has a real soft spot for that one) and, because Frau Blucher has such a unique relationship with horses, a couple of “horse-titled” films. My TCM Message Board Guest Programmer is Moviecollectoroh and he selected some very interesting “Living Quarters” films for this schedule, all of which are premieres. Thanks, Moviecollectoroh! Some other schedule segments include: Seldom (or Never) Seen Academy Award Honorees, Julie Doesn’t Sing A Note and Fred Doesn’t Dance A Step, They’ve Got The Wrong Guy and L.A. Stories which includes my TCM Essential, “L.A. Confidential” along with my Noir Alley Saturday Midnight selection, “Crime of Passion.” The week concludes with TCM Underground with some films which take place “Literally Underground.” Enjoy.

We start off with two movies for birthday girl Lesley Ann Warren. There's also yesterday's noir alley repeat. We then have the programming challenge of four early Hollywood silent movies, which I decided to border with silent films from Germany, Britain, France, Russia and Japan. With Monday we have movies from the three birthday Ms-Monty, Mae and Maureen, before we get to the fourth birthday actor and star of the Month Robert De Niro. Tuesday is devoted to the monthly spotlight, revolution in films, with films on revolution in Cuba, France, the Spanish Civil War, 1968, the Russian Civil War, the English revolution, Vietnam and the seventies.
Then we get to the highlight of the week, musical premieres from A to Z. It has Disney animated films! It has Best Picture nominees (All That Jazz)! It has notorious flops (At Long Last Love)! It has dramas where the characters do a lot of singing (Distant Voices Still Lives, Lagaan)! It has comedies where the characters do a lot of singing (Help! Monty Python and the Meaning of Life)! It has operas (Moses and Aron, Khovanshchina)! (Interestingly Shoskatovich was nominated for an oscar for the last film. He, and Duke Ellington, lost to West Side Story.) Anyway, my lists includes dance films (Mammame)! It includes communist musicals, with nudity (Red Psalm)! It includes concert films (Stop Making Sense)! It includes documentaries (Let it be)! It includes a Bugs Bunny cartoon to fill a fifteen minute gap! Surprisingly very few films had to be included just to fit all of the letters.
Also on Thursday evening we have guest programmer LawrenceA has seven films, including six pre-Code films. For the end of Saturday, it was a bit tricky to find someone to hang a theme on. There don't appear to be that many Hollywood people born on August 22: names like David Chase, Honor Blackman, Cindy Williams and Valerie Harper are more associated with television. So I concluded with three sci-fi films with an absence of overoptimism for Ray Bradbury's birthday.

We have four wonderful schedules to choose from and you get to deide who will be the person to host the next challenge! You can vote in this thread or send A Private Message to Me. Voting ends at Noon Eastern Time of August 23.

Technically, that's because once a new studio acquires an old one, if it wants to cement its own stamp on one of the iconic franchises, it has to make one of its OWN, from scratch, under original authorship. (As was the case when Disney had to make a new Muppets movie, and Michael Eisner was compelled to make a new Fantasia and Mary Poppins after buying Old Disney.)
And if Disney plans to cash in on Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Cheaper By the Dozen and the neo-Apes, that means having to make "our" version that doesn't belong to anyone else. Although, admittedly, Home Alone can't be stretched out into a Disney+ series, so that one just gets a one-off remake.
Still, as long as there's no word yet about Alvin, Ice Age, Predator or Die Hard, we're still safe. 😅
Spoke too soon. In come more Die Hards.....
-
Just a simple question. Please base it on the company's films, both classic and post-classic, and their general quality.

TCM has aired movies from the 2010s before. Le Havre, Love Among the Ruins, Human Voice. A few others too that I can't recall right now. They even aired a documentary about Bergman from 2012 yesterday.
Hugo and The king's Speech too.

Greta Garbo has the most with 4 times, first in April 1994, most recently in April 2019.
Bette Davis has 3, as does Greer Garson, John Wayne, Joan Crawford, Doris Day, and Frank Sinatra

Oh, dear, and I saw it when I was 16.....

Looks like I can finally get around to some of those few Bette films I haven't seen! That said though, I've already seen over 50 with her in them.
-
Well, one of the films that is new is being discussed is set in 1969 and features tons of references to films made around that time. And I feel we are all a bit interested in what studios are up to, and other things. (I know I was pleased as punch to find a site with old Siskel and Ebert shows from the late 70s early 80s and was tempted to share some here) We might be a classic film board, but I don't feel we need to stop at a certain time. If something truly astonishes us, we should talk about it. Doesn't matter the era. And I also feel that some of the more recent post-studio system decades (70s, 80s, 90s) are an era most of us are familiar with and I feel that many hold a soft spot for those times.

I can't say that many of those are very enticing. Of the ones that I've seen (18 of them), I'd only be interested in buying Dersu Uzala, After Hours, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. I'm not too excited to watch any of those that I haven't, but I'll give them a shot if they show up on the Criterion Channel (a few of them are already there).
i kind of have to agree. My predicament with most of them is that either I already have copies of some [the more mainstream ones] or they just aren't the highest priority of things to watch. I would like Secrets and Lies though. I also had to edit the list, because I missed one title: 2000's Bamboozled, Spike Lee's audacious blackface satire. Lee himself has confirmed it.
-
In advance of tomorrow's announcement (which we all know already will include Prince of Tides because it was teased 3 months ago), I found a list of films that are either confirmed as coming sometime soon to the collection and are awaiting a release date or ones that are widely suspected. Of ones confirmed to be in the pipeline or now have ties with Janus Films, there are the following awaiting release:
Betty Blue [1986] (likely December)
Old Joy [2006] (likely January)
Until the End of the World [1991] (either November or December)
High Hopes [1988]
Now Voyager [1942]
Holiday [1938]
Bamboozled [2000]
The Cameraman [1928]
Come and See [1985]
The Comfort of Strangers [1990]
Secrets and Lies [1996]
2046 [2004]
Days of Being Wild [1990]
Happy Together [1997]
Fallen Angels [1995]
King Lear [1987]
Irma Vep [1996]
Streetwise [1984]
The Eyes of Orson Welles [2018]
Chocolat [1989]
Beau trevail [1999]
Paris is Burning [1990]
The Devil and Daniel Johnson [2005]
Burn! [1969]
The Saga of Gosta Berling [1924]
The night of Counting the Years [1969]
Dersu Uzala [1975]
Varda by Agnes [2019]
There are also strong inklings that Criterion has the rights to Citizen Kane [1941], The Other Side of the Wind [1976/2018] and After Hours [1985]. And the Grand Budapest Hotel [2014] is widely expected.
-
If I'd have to pick the best films of the series, I would go with Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and The Living Daylights.....

All very good films that I enjoy. Don't listen to the haters.
That's the thing, I actually liked Lost Horizon. it has this terrible reputation and yes it didn't gel with the majority of films made in the early 70s, but seeing it out of that 70s context makes things a bit easier for the film. Taken out of the context of the time, there is something appealing and likable about it and the cast handles many scenes quite well. And it always held interest.

1991's THE FISHER KING - a perfectly directed movie whose central theme is that we are all connected starring Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl, Amanda Plummer & Micheal Jeter.

The performances of all principles are truly outstanding and charming with the most perfect dialogue in a movie EVER. This viewing was prompted by my missing Michael Jeter-this is one of his best performances- and was reminded just how much I loved Mercedes Ruehl in this too. Solid support all around.
This was one of Terry Gilliam's earlier films where he didn't write the screenplay, and the movie is better for it. Gilliam concentrates on telling the story in his own unique way, most notably his personification of psychosis as The Red Knight, an image only Robin Williams (as character Perry) can see. The incredible costume, lighting, fireballs and slow motion for the Red Knight is reminiscent of the imagery in NIGHT/CURSE OF THE DEMON.
Gilliam's work shines in the luminous, thoughtful often dazzling cinematography bringing you into this world of contrasts between life's love/beauty coldness/ugliness and seriousness/absurdity:
I watch this periodically just to remind me what great filmmaking & acting looks like. If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend it!
I only saw it through all the way once, although I looked at some scenes when it was available of Showtime not too long ago. In a way, I am kind of scared to revisit it, because my first viewing of it was perfect. With the exception of ET (where I was a basket case for the last 40 minutes), this film gave me the strongest emotional reaction of any film I've seen, and its still a film I'm haunted by. Everyone is on the top of their game here. A few months ago, i tried to compose some of my thoughts about the film into a review, 3 years after having seen it....I'm reprinting it here.
QuoteI realize its strange to add a review for a film one saw in 2016. But then again, this is no ordinary film. The Fisher King is one of those films that, for me, at least hit a true nerve and went straight for the heart. Along with ET, this is one of the films I cried at the most. Perhaps, it is more poignant now then it was in 1991, since Robin Williams' tragic passing in 2014 only added another layer of poignancy to the film.
Williams is indeed fantastic in a part that balances both his manic comic side and his tender, heartbreaking dramatic one, and it is probably the best performance he ever gave. But Jeff bridges is as good, if not better, in one of the best performances of his own career. He has to manage quite an arc, going from a disreputable jerk at the beginning, through self-loathing loner, through penitant trying to make amends, to brief reversion back through heartless jerk, to becoming a decent individual through true and deep redemption. It's quite a ride, and he manages all the changes perfectly, making it feel natural and never forced; this is one of the best leading actor performances of the 90s.
Which is not to overlook the three sublime supporting performances. Mercedes Ruehl won a richly deserved Oscar as a strong, witty woman breaking inside from years of being worn down by Bridges whom she loves regardless. She balances humor and tenderness and she is always astonishing to watch, and I wish her great talent was seen in more films. Amanda Plummer, as the object of William's affection, is beautifully tender as well, so shy and insecure. The scene where Williams walks her home is a great scene, one of the most romantic and touching I've seen. And then there's Michael Jeter as the homeless singer who possibly has AIDS. He steals the show in his earlier scenes with strong humor, and then is astonishing in his final scene, a scene that still cuts like a knife in my memory as being one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever put to celluloid.
The whole film is filled with astonishing scenes and camera angles: the way the radio studio at the beginning looks like a prison cell, the unnerving red knight, the gorgeous mass waltz at Grand Central Station, the unique dinner, the harrowing flashback to William's past.... It's rare for such a film to offer so much but there you go. This is a film that is admittedly not for everyone (the reviews from 1991 show that), but for anybody willing to go along with it, it is a journey they will remember forever.

Mark Stevens headed west

And another trip west was in store

Romance developed near the water

The Quiet American was much changed from the Grame Greene book, which had viewed the title character, played by Audie Murphy, in a spectacularly horrible light

War was again in the cards

Gable and Lancaster came back to UA for a well-regarded war drama

It was next time for a jungle adventure

Then a dab of horror

Edge of Fury was an early example of a film with a nihilistic conclusion

Machete was a tale of murder in Puerto Rico

Bob Hope starred in the comedy Paris Holiday

Robert Mitchum was dealing out illegal hooch in the cult film Thunder Road

Here comes the west again....

At least this one came with Joel McCrea

Marie Windsor was among the Island Women

The Vikings was an adventure epic with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, and Ernest Borgnine

Tony Curtis was back again fighting in the war with Frank Sinatra in Kings Go Forth. Natalie Wood was along for the ride.

The Lone Ranger returned

Wink of an Eye was a small comedy

Brigitte Bardot was big at the time, so La Parisienne was a smashing success of an import

The Lost Missile was a sci-fi film with Robert Loggia

A dash of horror....

God's Little Acre was a controversial hit. Shown here Robert Ryan and Tina Louise

Two cases of sci-fi menace

Followed by the landmark and brilliant drama The Defiant Ones, a Best Picture nominee, also nominated for Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier (first Black actor to be up for Leading Actor), Theodore Bikel, and Cara Williams

The Gun Runners proved to be another film based on the Hemingway story that had been filmed as To Be or Not to Be and as The Breaking Point. Audie Murphy and Eddie Albert starred.

Sterling Hayden was back in the West

Gary Cooper headed West for one of his best regarded late-career films

Robert Loggia starred in the B Cop Hater

William Wyler served up amn all-star Western with The Big Country which won an Oscar for burl Ives, and also starred Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Jean Simmons, and Carroll Baker

Sterling Hayden was back for a Mexican adventure

Dana Andrews went noir

And Gene Barry dealt with the Cold War in Hong Kong.

Menace in the Night was a noir from England

Alec Guinness was excellent as a curmudgeonly painter in the wry and offbeat The Horse's Mouth.

Meanwhile Susan Hayward had her own (Oscar-winning) triumph with I Want to Live, a powerful and gripping story of a real-life woman doomed in a tale of law and disorder.

Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis Jr appeared in an African-American version of the melodrama Anna Lucasta

Back to crime with The Mugger

Victor Mature starred in China Doll, a cinematic return for director Frank Borzage

Lonelyhearts served as the film debut for Maureen Stapleton (Oscar-nominated here) and starred Montgomery Clift, Robert Ryan, Dolores Hart, and Myrna Loy

And Separate Tables was another all star production (David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Gladys Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Wendy Hiller, Rita Hayworth, Cathleen nesbitt, Rod Taylor). This one was sensitively handled and was one of UA's best of the year. Niven and Hiller won Oscars.

American International Pictures
The Screaming Skull started the year off with horror

Sci-Fi had its turn next

Then it was time for the air force with John Agar and Audrey Totter
_poster.jpg)
Mike Conners was the star of the war film Suicide Battalion

The Cool and the Crazy told of troubled youth

Daddy-O was another tale of youth, but had one important note. The legendary film composer John Williams began his movie career here with this film.

Dragstrip Riot mixed the youth with murder. Connie Stevens had a supporting part
.jpg)
Attack of the Puppet People, now that's some title.

9 Years before Faye Dunaway had her say, Dorothy Provine played Bonnie Parker

Charles Bronson was playing a gangster as well

Straight out of Juvie hall

back to the cars again

And then back to horror

War of the Colossal Beast found a truly large monster on display

Wartime called... twice in a row

Sign of changing times; Robert Vaughn went from starring in Teenage Caveman to becoming an Oscar nominee in just one year

More horror with Night of the Blood beast

This was seemingly only a must for those into beach films, despite the fantasy setting

Uh. too much...

Arachnophobia had a good reason for forming....

the year closed with another war film

That it was. It's very short American theatre run was from the ill-fated AFD, the company started by ITC's Lord Lew Grade. The studio hit it big with The Muppet Movie and had a critical hit with Inside Moves, but was mostly saddled with things like Raise the Titanic, Saturn 3, The Jazz Singer, and Can't Stop the Music. They ended after only two or three years in early 1981. The movies (either from ITC or EMI) that might have saved their hide were put out at Universal: On Golden Pond, The Great Muppet Caper, Frances, Sophie's Choice, Cross Creek, and Tender Mercies.
