  1. She only made a handful of films, but since two of them, The Ritz and The Girl Most likely, were on this year, they could have done a brief clip. Georgia Engel was also excluded, but her best regarded theatrical film, Taking Off, has not been on TV for years, and never on TCM. At least two TV-mostly actors were included.... but Valerie Harper was up for a Golden Globe for Chapter Two, and Luke Perry had a bit in this year's Best Picture frontrunner, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
  2. They did. Barbara went on January 20th and Ava followed on January 25th.
  3. Lucy in the Sky with White Diamonds The long lost film starring the Fab Four! John, Paul, George, and Ringo befriend Lucy (Lynn Redgrave), the greatest of all young female aviatrixes, and her sisters Lucinda (Rita Tushingham), Margaret (Judy Geeson), and Isadora (Olivia Hussey). Romance is in the air between Paul and Lucy, brought all the more to the fore by her perfume, White Diamonds, created by her personal friend Elizabeth Taylor (playing herself). The climax comes when all 8 of them jet out to a Hollywood party where The Beatles perform while Liz and Richard Burton dance a furious frug. Indeed, most of the cast starts doing the dance..... even Lucy's grandmother played by Dame Edith Evans.....
  4. Haphazardly. Literally, I was known in a group I was in once for how I zigzagged between time periods with no rhyme or reason. I generally go with whatever comes to mind when it comes to DVDs from the home collection, whatever is sent in the rental DVD packets, what's playing on TCM, what's available on HBO, Showtime, or some of the other cable channels, what's on Watch TCM or Amazon Prime, things like that. That said, anymore, I tend to skew a bit older. Over 460 of the 677 films I've seen for the first time this year predate 1970.
  5. Haven't seen it yet, but it could be the reason De Armas wasn't much featured in the trailer is maybe because she's still rather new to the movie scene and only on the cusp of stardom? She was brilliant a few years back in Blade Runner 2049, but that film unfortunately wasn't the hit it deserved to be.
  6. I think deep down, TCM is one of the few channels anymore that has a loyal fan base, because their programming hasn't changed (Indeed aside from religious networks, HBO and other premium channels, the news and sports ones, and a smattering of specialty channels, most have changed dramatically since the 90s). True, some films do repeat too often (North by Northwest, anyone?) and sometimes I'm not interested in what's on, but I'm just one person, you know? But I think that sometimes, TCM is so personal to people that they only want what they like to air. Plus, with the way AMC turned out, there has been a fear that TCM will go the same way. Well, TCM has always been attached to a film library, something AMC never had. So I think, at least for now, it will be the way it has been for the last 25 years.
  7. I had heard a rumbling about that, but hadn't read the full story. It's certainly an intriging one, and I for one hope she gets the nomination this year.
  8. Warner Archive Blu-Rays for January. The Cimarron pictured is the 1960 remake.... Come on WB, give us a DVD of Penelope as well. Please? Edit: Penelope is on DVD too as an exclusive on the TCM shop for a few weeks. Underwater is likewise an excluse at Critic's Choice Video. I'm pre-ordering a copy of Penelope right now. I've waited over 8 years for this and I'm not going to wait one more day!
  9. It will be interesting to note if this particular song receives a nomination. It was written by Oscar-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, a wonderful actress whose winning performance was bizarrely her only nomination. Almost 40 years on from Melvin and Howard, will this become her second nomination?
  10. No, ts just that the look of the film is kind of creepy.i
  11. I don't knpow, with me that's something that happens every day, you just have to keep counting calories. Conmgratulations though on keeping it off for 75 years.

  13. Sophia Loren -- Arabesque Grace Kelly -- To Catch a Thief Raquel Welch -- The Three Musketeers Elke Sommer -- A Shot in the Dark Natalie Wood -- Penelope
  14. Oh, and Eve Arden too, that year, and three well-regarded directors Jacques Demy, Martin Ritt, and Michael Powell.
  15. Tonto in Harry and Tonto, but i assume that too is in the Parade piece.
  16. One year that was really bad for celebrity passings, although by next year, its 3 decades ago was 1990. As I just commented on YouTube, 1990 saw the passings of Ava Gardner, Paulette Goddard, Joan Bennett, Rex Harrison, Joel McCrea, Irene Dunne, Barbara Stanwyck, and Greta Garbo all in the same year.
  17. She appeared in the 1979 film Chapter Two, with Marsha Mason and James Caan. Although she was not up for an Oscar, she managed a Golden Globe nomination for it.
  18. i do think there were two star vehicles that succeeded this year: Once upon a Time in Hollywood and Ford Vs Ferrari, and I've also noticed from film sites that people still follow the films of various stars. I would not say that the movie star is dead, but rather is still very much alive, especially if you throw rentals and streaming into the mix.
  19. Another earlier part I remember him in was as James Caan's lawyer in Hide in Plain Sight in 1980, which was a pretty good film.
  20. The year claimed another memorable player. I know him best from Moonstruck, but he was chilling as the husband in Purple Rose of Cairo, riviting in Do the Right Thing, amiable in The Cemetery Club, quite fine in City Hall outshing the other performances in it except for Pacino, and actually quite good in a rare leading part as the neurotic directed in the uneven but interesting 1993 film The Pickle.
  21. I gave it a 10 too. It's really one of Tarantino's two best films, and maybe his best of all (The other for me was Jackie Brown). Just so many wonderful little touches throughout. I hope it wins best Picture and I think it will. It would be the best winner in a long time.
  22. i really don't think there was a bad decade at that time, but I guess I'll go with the 60s, because although there were plenty of masterpieces being made, there were a few films that I saw from then that were so bad that I wished I never watched them.
  23. What was the final grade on Hollywood for you? I rented it last night and watched it between yesterday and today. I was bowled over.
