  1. Ditto on what is listed by littletramplover! I guess you like dry wit as well as I. Gotta be in a mood for the slapstick, though ... but sometimes it makes me laugh so hard that I cry.

My favorite wit has got to be William Powell, though. He and Myrna were great at the hi-brow stuff. And neither of them were afraid to stick it to ya.

  2. Bette has my vote. I love Joan, but there is something unadorned about Bette that endears her to me. She's a real woman's woman. Joan stood her ground, but differently. Both talented actresses!

  3. Lionel is my favorite. I will watch anything he is in. Ethel is my next favorite. These two, with their incredibly distinctive voices, always seem to offer some point of wisdom in all they do. Steadfast characters.

  4. My other top-five film is not a tear-jerker, though. It is Great Expectations. I love this film because it taps every emotion and every style of life. It has mystery, suspense, joy, sorrow, the triumph of the underdog, true love, true goodness; it has the beautiful, the ugly, the rich, the poor, etc. I love it from the very first frame to the very last!

  5. A David Lean masterpiece! This movie peaked my interest with all the high praise it had received, so I went searching for it and, after monitoring eBay for a short while, found a pristine copy that I purchased at a reasonable price. This is now one of my top 5 favorite films. Now that I think about it, David Lean has directed two of my top five ... I cry every time I watch it. The last few lines just do me in!

P.S. Henry Daniell was also the nasty Lowood schoolmaster in Jane Eyre who caused poor Elizabeth Taylor to die after marching in the rain as punishment!

  7. The format is interesting and I believe their programming does attempt to address different preferences: Silents, Foreign, or one of my favs, Darkness After Dawn film noir, The Essentials for the newbies. I have seen all the Oscar films, too, but I still watch them to find something new that I may have missed in previous viewings. But then I'm very analytical and also try to learn from viewing the artists' work.

I agree with the other poster that I haven't been getting much sleep. And I need a new supply of video tapes. So many movies, so little time!

  8. I think the horse antics were spontaneous too. Animals do the darndest things! I wonder how many takes that scene took or if it was just all that wonderful! This film is one of my favorites. The snappiest wit and priceless timing is the tops.

  9. How about Wm. Holden and Kim Novak in Picnic? When she comes down the stairs dancing and gently swishing her skirt ... you can see him (and everyone else at the picnic) practically drooling over her.

And a more modern-day picture, Body Heat. Kathleen Turner was one hot babe. Wm. Hurt broke a few things to get at her!

  10. I agree with you on Robert Walker. He had a very good screen presence. He was great in Strangers...

Brandon de Wilde's death was a tragedy. I thought he held his own with Newman in Hud, and would have had a good career. After I saw him in Hud, I looked for other works to view and was sorely disappointed he had died so young. He was a talented young man and is terribly missed.

Isn't it crazy the way things are? You just never know...
