I am excited to see the Tennessee Williams Film Collection is coming soon, and it includes Baby Doll which I have been waiting for forever.

Was anyone able to attend the Film Noir festival in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago? I so wanted to go, but it didn't work out this time. I will be there next year though.
-
No, I don't take classic to mean old, it just turns out that way most of the time. Oh, and thanks for informing me that certain movies are essential viewing if I appreciate film history. I would have gone on watching just the movies that I think are classics and missed Benji and Absence of Malice.
-
Of course I didn't miss those, I turn it off when the modern junk comes on.
-
Unfortunately as I have already mentioned, I find myself watching less and less of TCM. The point is that I used to watch it all the time when it used to show classic movies and nothing but classic movies.
-
I never mentioned any of those films irking me, especially Paper Moon which is an excellent movie, and since it is a period movie done in black and white it fits right in. The others though you can have, and watch on other channels.
-
If you don't have those channels, as someone posted on another thread you can get those movies for free at your local library.

I see the keyword as CLASSIC. And they don't call it Turner Modern Classic Movies.
-
and I'm just the opposite.

It's funny you should say that, I was listening to a great radio station that played 40's and 50's music and they just changed it to a talk radio show. There is no other radio station out here with that kind of music so my radio is off for good. If TCM continues to change for the worse I will be watching DVDs for my old movies just as I listen to CDs for my old music.

I'm with you Melanie. I pay for cable just so I can watch TCM, I watch nothing else except the occasional Food Network program. I am finding myself having nothing to watch these days while TCM decides to show us a multitude of modern movies (and not even good ones) or that anime. It used to be a wonderful station, there was no other like it. I am hoping they discontinue these stunts and return to being the station we can count on for classic films.
-
Most of us are "movie buffs that are fortunate enough to enjoy a variety of films from all eras of moviemaking". We just don't think they all belong on TCM. We used to be able to count on TCM for classic old movies, and if a modern film was in order the hundred or so other channels would suffice.

I too am a Gene fan! "Singing in the Rain" was one of my favorite movies growing up.

Excellent observation Constarkel, my sentiments exactly.

I don't think we need to start making derogatory comments on usernames, just because you don't agree with the poster. This should be a friendly atmosphere.

It is sad that I have to change the channel so frequently as of late. TCM is my favorite channel and I would like to be able to continue to turn to them for the old, classic, mostly black and white movies for many years to come.
I realize there are B movies from all eras, but the older ones are more interesting and contain better acting than the majority of newer movies - in my opinion.
-
Obviously the definition of a classic movie will be different to each person. I watch TCM for the pre 60's movies, which are not available on other channels. TCM used to be a channel you could leave on all day if you wished and none of the modern crap would make an appearance. My beef is just that those modern films are available every day on the other stations, so why does TCM have to show them?
-
Most of us watch TCM because it is the only place to go to watch the great films from the golden age of Hollywood. Of course we are disappointed when TCM decides to "broaden our horizons" and showcase the modern movies that are available on every other channel. Regarding the Oscar theme, that could be a great theme since there are so many quality films that were nominated or won between 1929 and even up to the 60's.
-
It's too bad they didn't chose the 25th prime time, as that night is not one of TCM's best.
-
I agree with Constarkel, the evening of the 25th would be an excellent time to salute Shelley Winters - we wouldn't miss a thing.

I have a mere 19" TV and I choose widescreen whenever I have the choice. I much prefer seeing a scene in it's entirety over just seeing the middle of a scene with the sides cut off. A lot can be missed, and things get distorted when a movie is butchered and stretched to "fit your screen".
-
Elia Kazan's "Baby Doll" should be made available on DVD.
-
One of my favorite modern movies set in the 40's is "Brighton Beach Memoirs", but I also think they did a great job with "The Notebook".
-
I have resorted to having my sweetie record all my favorite TCM movies on DVDs for me, I just gave up waiting for my favorite movies to come out on DVD. I now have excellent copies of Baby Doll and Bed of Roses, 2 movies that will probably never be available on VHS or DVD. You may want to get yourself a DVD recorder.

Would "ala carte" subscription end all of the debates?

Now that would be a beautiful thing.
