  1. I'm not positive on Cagney but he does seem to have that style. I will have to look into that.
  2. I have never seen this movie on TCM, have they ever shown this movie or at least in the last couple of years? Why don't they show this Hitchcock classic?
  3. " No complaints here; at least it wasn't a night of "Rocky," "Rocky II," "Rocky III"... " You can say that again!
  4. "Is it my imagination or does TCM hardly ever play The Jazz Singer? Mostly imagination. I don't think a year goes by without it." In my book once a year is hardly ever and not acceptable, especially when other movies are being shown at least monthly.
  5. Ruby Keeler was a talented dancer, but she was a buck dancer. "Both the shoes and the style were different from regular tap dance. Instead of metal taps, the soles were wooden, and hard. Buck dancers stayed in relatively the same place on stage, and their concern was the rhythm coming from their feet, rather than how they looked on stage. They stayed on the balls of their feet most of time, which meant that their torsos moved very little, and the movements were isolated to below the waist. Because of this style of movement, the early Buck dancers often appeared less graceful in comparison with later tap dancers."
  6. A period movie is any movie that takes place in the past. Those are usually the only movies I watch now of the new movies - The Aviator, Cinderella Man, The Virgin Queen, etc..
  7. > > A better questions is why was it shown on TCM at > all? > > Because it fit the night's theme. I believe that many themes are dreamed up just so they can show a specific movie that really doesn't "fit". I personally don't think cutesy themes are needed to show a lineup of good movies - but I know that is not the popular opinion around here.
  8. My sweetie was supposed to move out here from the east coast by then, but he is not yet so I will stay home alone and cook yummy snacks and watch my dvds.
  9. Hey, I subscribed to that magazine but I haven't received my copy yet! I have some friends that live their daily lives in vintage clothes, furnishings, etc and I am going to join them as soon as I can. The 20's to 40's are my favorite eras, which is why I get so upset when TCM shows movies from the 70's to now.
  10. I've always liked Brando, but didn't care for James Dean.
  11. In my opinion this one is much better than the promos from previous months. I didn't have to hurry and turn down the volume!
  12. > I absolutey love this shot of Rhett Butler at the > bottom of the stairs looking all cocky and ever > distinguished. His look is almost naughty. I have to agree. I also think the intro shot of Bill Holden in Sunset Blvd. is great.
  13. Those pop up things are very annoying. Has anyone tried watching a baseball game on Fox in the last couple of years? Every corner of the screen has something going on, and then you get quick commercials in between pitches for crying out loud. TCM doesn't need to start this up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did the way things are going.
  14. > DON'T REPLY! Funny, I had to use the same tactic against our little friend from Texas. Funny how it's ok for some here to hurl insults but certain others may not.
  15. That is so true otterhere, they all had to be multi-talented, now they just have to have "the look".
  16. I hope not, it's the only one left with the nostalgic feel that one reel wonders and synchopation station had.
  17. Growing up my favorite Christmas present was a doll that you could feed fake babyfood. In the 70's the toys weren't as cool as say 50's and 60's. I think my all time favorite is my beautiful art deco amethyst ring my sweetie gave me a couple of years ago.
  18. You're exactly right jdb1. Every time this comes on I miss the old promo even more.
  19. Thanks for the info, I'm always looking at the sets when I'm watching a movie. I'm especially interested in the art deco styles and up to late 40's.
  20. I watched it too, it was a bit "different" but I liked it.
  21. I didn't misconstrue anything, that just happens to be how it reads and how I read it. And I wouldn't comment favorably on her post because she omitted anyone who had opinions that did not match her own. And some of those who she mentioned still post, but under new names. It doesn't take a genius to see them. By the way it's funny how you and the others like you think it's ok to insult.
  22. "However, I do count myself lucky. When I first entered these boards we had the cream of the crop, and that is somehing I will always remember." Mongo I think you could have put this in another way so as not to offend newer members.
