How about Dial M for Murder for crying out loud? And IFC isn't showing Pandora's Box anymore so when is TCM going to get it, they are selling the DVD after all???
-
I believe the reason some insist there is no trend toward modern movies is because those people are home all day and they see the good movies that are shown in the morning - because that is where all the good movies are stuck. Those of us who work only see what is on after 5, and that is where you will see most of the 50's and 60's movies, and the likes of Groundhog Day, Men in Black, or Awakenings - which would never be shown at 10am but can guarantee will be shown in the evenings.

I was referring to Jonparker's all time favorite movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

I'm with you mrsl!

She certainly had more talent than Dolly Reed......

That is interesting. I guess they really had to have Groundhog Day and Men in Black so Dial M for Murder gets put on the backburner.

I'm not positive on Cagney but he does seem to have that style. I will have to look into that.

I have never seen this movie on TCM, have they ever shown this movie or at least in the last couple of years? Why don't they show this Hitchcock classic?
-
I agree with you there, that movie was really bad.

What are all these MODERN movies doing in this thread???
I feel the same way you do otterhere. Unfortunately TCM now shows quite a few non-TCM worthy movies such as Moonstruck these days. It's funny but a lot of people on these boards actually prefer the movies from the 70's on to some of the real classics like Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, and Citizen Kane. Mention those movies here and almost everyone will say how bad those were. I like the movies from Hollywood's Golden Age and that is why I liked TCM, but now I hardly ever watch it.

" No complaints here; at least it wasn't a night of "Rocky," "Rocky II," "Rocky III"... "
You can say that again!

"Is it my imagination or does TCM hardly ever play The Jazz Singer?
Mostly imagination. I don't think a year goes by without it."
In my book once a year is hardly ever and not acceptable, especially when other movies are being shown at least monthly.

Ruby Keeler was a talented dancer, but she was a buck dancer. "Both the shoes and the style were different from regular tap dance. Instead of metal taps, the soles were wooden, and hard. Buck dancers stayed in relatively the same place on stage, and their concern was the rhythm coming from their feet, rather than how they looked on stage. They stayed on the balls of their feet most of time, which meant that their torsos moved very little, and the movements were isolated to below the waist. Because of this style of movement, the early Buck dancers often appeared less graceful in comparison with later tap dancers."

What's wrong with Groundhog Day?? Quite a bit, besides the fact that just doesn't need to be shown on TCM. This movie is also being shown on TNT and TBS, channels that are more suited to crappy movies like that. Of course this is my opinion, but I know others feel the same.
-
I'm not saying it is just another movie channel but it seems to be going that way.
-
I just noticed that Groundhog Day is on the schedule this month. Oh the humanity!!

"As for the Oscar winning films of the studio era vs post-1960s films and why? TCM has to rent/lease all the films it shows.
The majority of Oscar nominated and Oscar winning films from the studio era may not be available in a digital format that TCM can run.
Few studios are willing (WBros and Sony being the exception) to underwrite the expense of transferring a film to digital so that it can be broadcast."
If that is what has happened to TCM where was the logic in going digital so soon if they lost most of their library and are having to show newer movies as a result? To me it changes the channel from a classic movie channel to just another movie channel.
and by the way it is "sychophants" not "synchophants"! Where is Cinesagejr when we need him?

I'll drink to that!

Last month or so I started ignoring brad, you may notice that he is involved in every argument that arises on here.

A period movie is any movie that takes place in the past. Those are usually the only movies I watch now of the new movies - The Aviator, Cinderella Man, The Virgin Queen, etc..

The pentagram is not a satanic symbol at all, we have Hollywood to thank for its association with satan.
moviegal53 the sycophant brigade likes to call some of us "doom and gloomers" because we notice that TCM shows more modern movies than they used to and some of us don't like it. Heaven forbid some of us prefer actual classic movies to the 70's, 80's and 90's movies. February is always rife with modern movies even though as you stated there are tons of old oscar winning or nominated movies they could show.

I believe that many themes are dreamed up just so they can show a specific movie that really doesn't "fit". I personally don't think cutesy themes are needed to show a lineup of good movies - but I know that is not the popular opinion around here.

I care. I do all of my TCM watching from dvds since the types of movies I like are on in the mornings. It would be nice to just turn on TCM and watch it on a Friday night though. A few years ago I would just leave my tv on TCM all the time.
