  1. bollywood101, Okay, I'll bite, what was the quote? Rusty
  2. filmlover, Quote: "Oh, wait. Oops, sorry?I just noticed I was looking at the wrong issue of Now Playing. This one is from October 2000. (AND IT REALLY IS. I got it on eBay.)..." Okay, I am very confused. For the second time, we have listed (on EBay) our fabulous "DECO MODERNE FIBERGLASS TV LAMP" and not one bid! Oh, sure...plenty of lookers but, no one wants to fork over ten dollars for this great addition to any vintage decor. I apologize, I know this message has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic. On the other hand, I now feel a bit better--people still purchase stuff on EBay. Maybe a third go-round? Rusty
  3. pktrekgirl and huntress, Another Star Trek anecdote: The University of Colorado at Boulder has an annual "Trivia Bowl". The thing is set up like the old "GE College Bowl"--two teams of four players answer a 'toss up' question and, if a member of one of the teams answers the toss up correctly, that team is eligible for a bonus question. One year, oh...about 1978, a special "Star Trek" only competition was played. The players were good. Note that the first "Star Trek" movie was still in the future, no TV spin-offs and little in the way of a comprehensive "Star Trek" database. I think most of the team members knowledge would have come from multiple viewings of "Star Trek" re-runs (very few home VCRs!). Maybe 'networking' with other "Star Trek" fans. Anyway. One of the bonus questions asked was, "What is the apartment number of 'Gary Seven' in the episode "Assignment Earth". Three of the four team members looked dumbfounded. Team member number four screwed up his face and pulled that little sucker (the correct number) out of his database. The standing room only audience gave that guy a standing ovation! Rusty
  4. Huntress, Quote: "I'll remember to stay away from that Darryl Hannah movie. Thanks for the warning!" Jeez...I think there must be something wrong with me. Reading the two reviews of "Summer Lovers", I guess it must be one of the worst movies ever made. I am almost frantic for a screening! Besides, I am primed. My (way too short) 'festival' of Robert Culp films is nearly finished. Rusty
  5. CineSage, Quote: "Still, it's a terrible shame that Mankiewicz never had the opportunity to fashion the pair of 3 1/4 films (CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA and ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA he envisioned (and filmed), and we'll probably never have the opportunity to see them, either (though Fox has consistently expressed interest in restoring the film to this version as much as is possible)." Several years ago, AMC broadcast "Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood". The show went into some detail concerning the first shooting schedule. I understand most of the footage from the first go-round was discarded. What ended up on the screen was from a second shooting schedule. True? CineSage...you seem to know a lot about the 1963 Cleopatra version. Do you know if Fox still has the footage from the first shooting schedule of Cleopatra? Rusty
  6. cagney69, Quote: "How about Andy Devine in all those cowboy pictures. His voice could have started a stampede..." His voice is grating but (having only read in movie synopsis for "Roy Rogers" movies), I would like to hear him say, "crocacrooka...owlhoots". What is Andy talking about? Rusty
  7. FredCDobbs, Quote: "Burl Ives (as ?Big Daddy?) to walk in to her palace and start cussin?" I think I hear him, "Mendacity...men-da-ci-tee...Cleo-sister-woman!" Rusty
  8. MattHelm, Back to 1999 (and I thought was lost): http://www.theonion.com/content/node/38990 Rusty
  9. markfp2, Quote: "Lots of times theatres will skimp on the size of the lamp in order to save money..." The last time I went to our local theater (and I mean the last time), the screen was dirty and the bulb was under-sized (maybe old...maybe junk). The movie was "Stargate". I saw the same movie on HBO. During the viewing of the HBO "Stargate", I said to my wife, "I didn't know they were in a desert". I am (almost) not kidding. Rusty
  10. sweetbabykmd, Is that Daryl Hannah line for real? sweetbabykmd...Don't mis-understand me--I believe you...but, is that Daryl Hannah line for real? I've got to find "Summer Lovers" and watch the thing. I hope the rest of the movie approaches the idiocy you highlighted! Rusty
  11. Hello, "Convention City" from 1933. When is TCM going to show "Convention City"? Never. Rusty
  12. MattHelm, Quote, "Do people usually send those newsletters with Season's Greetings cards?" My experience? No...not my family. Well...yes. Strangely, my mother gets an annual newsletter from a former neighbor. The newsletter has arrived for over forty years--since they moved to another part of the country! Even stranger, every year, my mom makes sure I read the thing during my Christmas visit. I guess my mother thinks: 1) The former neighbor's 'doings' are important. 2) I remember the neighbors. The answer is "no" to items 1) and 2). I was around five years old when the 'diary people' moved! However. Based on what you have written about your family, I think you would agree--it is best to humor mom. I read the letter. Rusty
  13. MattHelm, Regarding the Ross/Supremes quote. Again, I have to clean my bio-fluids off my computer monitor. Rusty
  14. Huntress, You and any other Star Trek fan, will believe what I am about to write. Everyone else? Probably not. The first season of Star Trek, I begged my mother (she was working at Pennys for the Christmas season) for a spanky-new Penny's reel-to-reel tape recorder. I got the recorder for Christmas...yay! From December of that year, and for the next two and one-half years, I recorded the sound of every Star Trek episode. Not only did I fill up a bunch of reel to reel tapes, I listened to the tapes and...listened to tapes and...listened to the... You get the idea. The tapes are long gone. However. The first season of Star Trek, I sent a fan letter (my one and only) to "Star Trek...NBC...Gene Roddenberry". A couple of months later I received (from Paramount) a manila envelope with: 1-8X10 picture of William Shatner ("Good Luck...William Shatner") and 1-8X10 picture of Leonard Nimoy ("Best Wishes...Leonard Nimoy"). If I have to turn my mom's house upside down, I am going to find those two pictures. I know they are stashed at her house...I just know it! BTW: My fanaticism for Star Trek has cooled since that time. Aww. Rusty I do have 1-8X10 of George Takei autographed at, ahem...a Star Trek convention (ca. 1975).
  15. MattHelm, Quote: "...A friend and I would crawl pubs from Cambridge to Boston on several occasions (see also: weekly) and we'd often find that we missed the last bus and train..." I enjoyed your anecdote. I thought it would have been a great addition to one of those--"What The 'Helm' Family Did The Past Year" letters. I hope your mom or, whoever was in charge of the annual newsletter, added your reminiscence for 'spice'. Aunt Tilly would have been green with envy, "s***, next year I'll have to lie like a dog to 'top' my sister". Rusty
  16. MattHelm Quote: "Not really funny, but common..." Situation you reference may not be funny. Your comment regarding situation? I laugh. As far as re-hashed plots. I think the last original story was created circa 200 B.C. B.C. is "Before The Common Era"...you know. Rusty
  17. MrWriteLa, "The Last of Sheila". "Parker Brothers" was the clue. BTW: Good job regarding the 'Hammer Film' trivia answer. Is the movie--Satan Rides Out(?) worth a rental? Rusty
  18. CharlieT, I have not seen daytime TV in a long time but, thinking about the 'dumbing down' of everything else these days--a couple of days of this thread would be ideal training to get on to any TV quiz show. The answer? Please...don't make me say it. Okay...bridge and, track...so there! Rusty
  19. traceyk65, Quote: "They also say it's a weepie, which is why I've been avoiding it. Is it a major tear-jerker?" I am not the one to answer "yes" or, "no", to your question. The only thing that makes me weep is my heating bill. I don't know your opinion of Ronald Colman but, "Random Harvest" is a Ronald Colman picture. My opinion? "Starring Ronald Colman" (that voice!) makes "Random Harvest" a must-see. Rusty
  20. kaplan, That is an excellent point regarding "in with the new...out with the old". So true...so true! I cannot tell you how many times I have run into that situation at work. Sitting on the floor of my laboratory are 300 back-up 'streamer' tapes. Tapes may still be fine but, what is stored on them is unreadable (hardware long gone). Why don't I do some housekeeping? I hate to 'displace' all those spiders and (did I see a couple of rodents take up residence?)...my furry friends. Rusty
