  6. A quick heads-up for tonight (12/7/15 Monday), George Cukor's final film "Rich and famous" (1981) is coming on TCM to-night at 11:45 PM.   It is not listed in the monthly schedule, but it is listed in the TCM Full Schedule (the daily schedule) and on my TV's listing.

For those who may not know, it is a modernized remake of 1943's "Old acquaintance".

This one stars Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen, in the counterparts of the roles played by Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins.

I remember that there was a bit of scandal in the late '90's and early 2000's, when this movie was reissued on video - not on DVD, but on VHS.  I read that the VHS reissue was a censored and somewhat edited version that TCM used to air back in the '90's.   However, the film has been re-issued on DVD around 2009 or so, and is a complete, uncensored, original theatrical version. \

To this day, I've never seen "Rich and famous" in its entirety.

  7. There is something I just noticed about the March 2016 schedule.

For the last few years, TCM's weekly Star of the Month marathons have always been on either Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.  Fridays have been reserved for the special monthly theme spotlights with a guest host.    For this March 2016, there isn't any special monthly theme, and the Star of the Month weekly marathons are all on Fridays, and the Star of the Month is Merle Oberon.

It looks like a good salute with plenty of her movies.   I was just a little disappointed that her film "This love of ours" is not part of the line-up.   On second thought, I'm not sure that TCM has ever aired it.   I can't remember whether or not it is listed in the "films that TCM has aired" thread.

  8. I was remembering the 1953 drama "Torch song".  One one hand, I like the movie - good cast, good acting, several good songs, and a gripping romance story.   At the same time, on the other hand, I have mixed feelings about its ending, even though it is a happy ending.

Jenny (Joan Crawford's character) - the musical theatre diva; angry, haughty, proud, jaded, and insecure.

Ty (Michael Wilding's character) - the blind pianist and accompanist and former arts and entertainment journalist; passionate yet temperate, honest, blunt, and compassionate.

Martha (Dorothy Patrick's character) - Ty's girlfriend; compassionate, devoted, faithful, tender, and temperate.

(When I use the word temperate - as I did when describing Ty and Martha, I mean "having self-control".)

The ending, while happy, makes me squint my eyes and think "What?!"   While Ty is playing the piano at home with Martha sitting there in the living room with him, Jenny visits and waits in the hallway.  Ty has no idea that Jenny is there.   Martha sees Jenny, and steps into the hallway to talk with her.    They have a conversation - which we the audience do not see or hear.   Then Martha leaves the apartment, and Jenny joins Ty, and then Jenny and Ty come together to start a romantic relationship.

All of this because Ty remembered Jenny from years ago, before Ty lost his eyesight.  Ty had seen Jenny as a young woman in a revue in a theatre and wrote an article about it, giving Jenny most of the praise.   Ty had seen what she looked like back then and remained infatuated with her after all those years.    This somewhat explains his dialogue to Martha in the first half of the movie or near the halfway point of the movie, where he tells Martha that he loves her, and that she is good to him, and that he knows what she looks like from descriptions, but that he still cannot see her, and that he can see Jenny.   So this surface attraction, based on a memory, is what results in Ty and Martha breaking up, and Ty taking up with Jenny?   Part of me wants to say "Oh, please!"     I actually wonder if this would have been a better movie if Ty and Martha stayed together, while Jenny learned the truth about herself from Ty and changed her ways as she did, but instead of becoming his girlfriend or future wife, she could have remained Ty's good friend - a grateful friend who found her way emotionally thanks to Ty, and who would be willing to offer him her shoulder to lean on if he needed it. That would not necessarily mean that she and Ty would have to become a couple.   I think that Martha was still quite a bit better for Ty than Jenny was.

I'm not sure who would agree with this or who would disagree with this, but I would be happy to hear your thoughts and your opinions.

  14. In fact, I remember either hearing or reading that Bette Davis didn't only want Norma Shearer to come out of retirement to star with her in "Old acquaintance", but that Davis was also willing to exchange roles with Shearer - so that Shearer could play the first lead role of Kit the humble and kind author of serious literature while Davis could play the second lead role of Millie the haughty and spiteful author of pulp fiction.

That being said, I was trying to conceive the thought of Shearer grabbing Davis, shaking her, and shoving her down to the sofa.   I've never seen Shearer's characters get violent or even physical with any other female characters in her movies?   Did Shearer ever get physical on-screen with any of her female co-stars?

Come to think of it, I was remembering the film "The women" (1939), and also the remake "The opposite sex" - which I actually like and really enjoy as well.

There is a contrast that comes to mind.

In "The Women," the wife Mary (Norma Shearer) confronts the mistress Crystal (Joan Crawford) in the department store dressing room, and it ends with Mary telling Crystal that if she wants to dress to please Stephen (the husband) then Crystal should not wear the dress she is wearing as Stephen doesn't like obvious effects, and Crystal says, "Thanks for the tip, but if what I wear doesn't please Stephen, I'll take it off."   Mary just looks a bit disgusted and leaves.

In "The opposite sex", the wife Kay (June Allyson) confronts the ex-mistress Crystal (Joan Collins) in the backstage dressing room, and it ends with Kay telling Crystal that if she wants to dress to please Steven (the husband), then Crystal should not wear the dress she is wearing as Steven doesn't care for the very obvious, and Crystal says, "Thank you, but if Steven doesn't like what I'm wearing, I take it off."  Kay walks up closer to Crystal and slaps her across the face. Crystal then smirks at Kay, and Kay runs out.

Just the same, in any case, I like other things about June Allyson's characterization and performance in the remake, particularly in a number of other scenes, but that is another matter.

Still, I've never seen Norma Shearer slap anyone in her films, let alone any other woman.  I can't imagine Shearer playing that scene in "The women" the way Allyson did in "The opposite sex".  It is quite difficult to imagine Shearer slapping Crawford, or any other woman.

As bold and as passionate and as daring as I have seen some of the characters that Norma Shearer has portrayed, somehow, she seems to have such self-control, self-discipline, grace, dignity, and poise that for her (albeit in character) to put her hands on another woman would be way beyond the normal and does not seem to match her fiber - somehow very out of character, if you'll pardon the expression.   To slap another woman simply doesn't seem like Norma.  It just isn't her.
