Another idea came to me for a movie that could be featured for Gene Hackman's Star of the Month September -
"No way out" (1987) - also starring Kevin Costner and Sean Young.
Where Gene Hackman's character kills his estranged lover in a jealous rage and then tries to have it covered up, with everything getting tangled up in spy intrigue.

Thank you for the information about Girardot. It's been years since I've seen "Twentieth Century".
I don't remember much about it. In fact, there are only two things that I remember about it: John Barrymore and Carole Lombard starred in it; and the original Broadway play (on which the movie was based) was revived on stage a few years ago with Anne Heche.
