Sewhite2000, I already did. I read the thread about what is defined in "classic". You raise a good point, and a few of the other folks do as well. I still don't agree. Just the same, I am not bashing you. Your list is a good one. I simply have a difference of opinion regarding only two of the names.
-
You have quite a list. However, I think Tom Berenger and Brad Pitt are not anywhere near classic film actors. They are way too modern. Berenger's career didn't begin until the 1970's. Pitt's career began in the late 1980's and took off with "Thelma and Louise" in the early 1990's. (I would say that 1960's would be the latest for an honoree's filmography to begin.) The rest of the names you thought of are A.O.K.. Some ideas that have come to me (some are the same as yours and the same a few of the others). - Sidney Poitier - Joan Leslie (She has never been a Summer under the Stars honoree, At least half of her films belong to the Time-Warner library and TCM has had access to some of her non-Time-Warner library films as well and can get access to them again.) - Leslie Howard (He has been a Star of the Month once, but has never been a Summer under the Stars honoree. Most of his films belong to the Time-Warner library, and TCM has also gained access to some of his others.) - Edmund Gwenn (Surprisingly, he has never been either a Star of the Month, or a Summer under the Stars honoree. He deserves to be both. At least half of his films are part of the Time-Warner library, and TCM has easily gained access to some of his others.) - Van Heflin (It's been four years. Some performers get the Summer Under the Stars honor way more frequently.) - John Ireland (He has never had the S.U.T.S. honor. About half of his films are in Time-Warner's library, and TCM has aired a number of his others.) - Carroll Baker (Three of her films belong to Time-Warner's library: "Easy to love" [an early film appearance], "Bridge to the sun", and "How the West was won". TCM has access to lots of her other films from various studios: "Baby doll" (1956, Warner Bros.), "Giant" (1956, Warner Bros.), "Something wild" (1961, United Artists), "The big country" (1958, United Artists), "Cheyenne autumn" (1964, Warner Bros.), "The greatest story ever told" (1965, United Artists), and "The miracle" (1959, Warner Bros.). TCM could get access to several others for S.U.T.S.: "Harlow" (1965, Paramount), "The carpetbaggers" (1964, Paramount), and her romantic comedy with Clark Gable "But not for me" (1959, Paramount). They would make good premieres.) - Nelson Eddy (Not yet honored for S.U.T.S.. Nearly all his films are in Time-Warner's library. TCM has aired them all and a couple of others. He is one of the shoo-ins as far as S.U.T.S. potential candidates are concerned.) - Donna Reed (It's been nearly 11 years since she was last honored. Her filmography is easy [mostly 1940's and 1950's MGM], regarding access.) - Laurence Harvey (Half of his film career was as a contract player for MGM during the 1960's. TCM has aired and can air some of his non-Time-Warner-owned films as well. [it has been years since TCM has aired "Darling" (1965).] With his MGM filmography and the easy, continuing access that TCM has of his films, it is a wonder that he has never been featured in Summer under the Stars, or as a Star of the Month for that matter.) - Susan Hayward (Very do-able. She made many films for RKO and MGM. TCM has access to her films from Warner Bros. and United Artists too. TCM has leased a number of her Fox films as well, several of which premiered on TCM for the first time this past September. Besides, it took 21 years for her to be named a Star of the month - last year 2015 in September. It has been 10 years since she was part of Summer under the Stars. About time for this one again also.) - Julie Christie (Six years is a while. Along with "Doctor Zhivago", it would give TCM an opportunity to air "Fahrenheit 451" after so many years! Yes! Here's hoping. Surely TCM could swing one or two Julie Christie premieres as well.) - Montgomery Clift - Janice Rule (She has had many supporting roles in films and several lead roles in films. A handful of her films were made for MGM. Many of her others were made for Columbia, Warner Bros., and United Artists, and TCM has aired them all at one time or another.) - George Kennedy (He has never been a S.U.T.S. honoree. He should have this honor. It would also be timely since he passed away earlier this year. TCM has had access to many of his films. TCM could even lease the three "Naked Gun" films as part of his day.) - Robert Taylor - Russ Tamblyn (He has never been an honoree. At least half of his films are MGM ones. TCM has aired "Peyton Place" [Fox] and "West Side Story" [united Artists] and could air them again.) - Gene Kelly - Sandra Dee - Jane Wyman - David Brian - Eve Arden - Eleanor Parker - Ann Sheridan - James Garner - Jack Lemmon - Humphrey Bogart - Carol Lynley (She did at least one or two films for MGM. TCM has had access to lots of her Fox and Columbia pictures and also a film she did for Universal and also "The Poseidon adventure" which belongs to Fox and/or Warner Bros.. TCM could probably acquire one or two more of her other films as well. She is still alive and should be part of S.U.T.S..) - Ruth Hussey (A deserving S.U.T.S. honoree-to-be. A number of lead roles, second lead roles, and meaty supporting roles comprised her filmography. Most of her films were done for MGM and RKO in the 1930's and 1940s. TCM recently aired "The uninvited" which was either for Paramount or Universal.) - Gladys Cooper - Yvette Mimieux (At least half of her films are MGM's, and TCM has aired lots of her other films from other studios, and will do so again in the coming weeks. ["Three in an attic", which is not available on video, will be airing on TCM this May.] She is still alive, and also deserves to be a part of Summer under the Stars. She has yet to be chosen for it.)
