That wasn't technically an emoticon, it was a smiley that I've saved to my web space and posted as an html image. -
HEDY LAMARR AND CATHERINE ZETA-JONES
daddysprimadonna replied to thomasterryjr's topic in General Discussions
Hedy Lamarr! The way that she looked so young and sweet and innocent in "Ecstasy" last night was a revelation when I've gotten so used to her later glamorous classical perfection. Lovely as Ms Zeta-Jones is,I can't picture her ever looking that sweet and young. Actually, I don't think that women these days, period, ever look as sweet and vulnerable and innocent, past the age of maybe 12,LOL, as Hedy did last night in "Ecstasy",and Hedy had to be in her early to mid twenties when she made that movie. I really can't get over how sweet and young she looked, especially in a film famed for its eroticism. She was darling in that cross-backed white jumpsuit that she took off before having her famous skinny-dip and naked romp through the woods. I just keep thinking of a wood nymph from Greek mythology when I picture that scene. -
Manderley was just beautiful, I'd have cried my eyes out and have wanted to just KILL old Danvers for torching it! Rebecca's bedroom was one of the most beautiful and romantic I've ever seen on screen or in life, with those windows and draperies and views, and the breezes she must've gotten, and the beautiful custom convent-made lingerie. People just don't appreciate the finer things anymore,it's all labels and show now, instead of true luxury and craftsmanship.

I finally read the book too,it was really good, although I don't usually care for books written in the first person. And it irritates me that we never learn Joan's character's name! I remember reading the really really old Harlequin romances when I was a kid(I'm not QUITE that old,LOL, my mother was just really picky about what romance novels we could read),the ones before they were spicy, and there were a lot of doctor/nurse stories-well anyway,in those, they had a lot of kind of meek heroines, and they were usually named Gemma or Pippa,so I imagine Joan's character being named something like that, haha.

I know, I was recording the one she did with Spencer Tracy as a doctor(forgot the title, forgive me Hedy!) also, and they did that cable check where the Weather Channel comes on for a few minutes.GRR! -

I loved it so much that I ordered and read the "Tevye" books by Sholem Aleichem, and I listen to the soundtrack in my car everywhere I go,singing along to "If I Was A Rich Man"(in the book Tevye says "if I was a Rothschild") and "Sunrise,Sunset",and of course "Tradition"(LOVE that song!). I play the wedding procession music and the bottle dance music really loud(windows up,of course,I know that the world's not necessarily interested in my taste in music ) -
I agree with the part about dealing with servants on the grand scale, especially if one wasn't "to the manor born" and they were young, but with Mrs Danvers,it wasn't just dealing with a presumptuous servant-that crazy woman tried to psyche Joan into jumping out the window, and tricked her delibeartely and blatantly into wearing a costume that Mrs Danvers knew would set her husband off-even if I was a meek mouse(which I was also,to a point, when that young),I would have to give ole Mrs Danvers the sack, and I'd be happy to tell my self-centered and obtuse husband why,and see if he thought that I should put up with that. If he did,he could kiss my rear end also

Amazon.com has the DVD of "Ecstasy", I ordered it a couple of months ago. I've only watched my DVD of it once,so I can't remember if it's the exact same print that TCM showed. I'm going to watch it again, because I really hope that it is. -

It was great as a movie, and not just for the beauty of Hedy. I suppose how much actual nudity is relative to what a person is used to seeing-for me,it was just right and tastefully done. She reminded me of a wood nymph from Greek mythology running through the woods. I loved how sweet and young she appeared in the film,we're so used to seeing her in her later classical perfection incarnation. The ending was a bit mysterious-I should say,a bit perplexing,to me-but I won't give it away since you didn't see it all I just really loved how sweet and vulnerable Hedy looked in this movie. She really was still "Hedwig" and not yet "Hedy" in it. -

1)Fiddler On the Roof-I'm going through a "phase" with it right now 2)Kiss Me Kate-second favorite musical, and the "phase" before FOTR 3)Watch On The Rhine-last summer's phase 4)All About Eve-the movie I watched on FOTR's "off-nights" this summer 5)Gone With The Wind-a sweeping epic, one of those movies in which I always see something that i missed before 6)Dr Zhivago-another epic, with a great story and wonderful photography(as always in a David Lean picture) 7) The Importance Of Being Ernest-I first saw this one on TCM and didn't realise that I'd love it so much,so when they showed it again, I was prepared with the VCR! I love the plummy voice of the actress who plays "Gwendolyn",and Oscar Wilde's wit is always a pleasure. Plus the Edwardian era is my favorite historical era,and Edward VII my favorite royalty, and I love stories about or that hover near him and his "Marlborough House Set". The British need to make a movie about him, both his position and as a man. I have one series done about him, with Judi Dench playing Queen Victoria, and it's good, but not up to their usual standards in these types of movies.I'd love to see his story,as lover, social leader, "Uncle Of Europe",and ruler, done right. -

I saw Linda Darnell in "Forever Amber" ages ago, I wish TCM could show that movie,or that i hadn't missed it by not even realising that I receive the Fox Movie Channel when it was playing on there a few months ago,LOL! (The book is good too,it's the great-great-grandmother of the "bodice-ripper" genre, only much more literate than any of those would ever be). -
I ordered them from www.amazon.com ---I am so in love with FOTR,that I ordered the books, the DVD,and the soundtrack CD from there,LOL. Also, I found a used out-of-print copy of "The Making Of Fiddler On The Roof" there(about the making of the musical with Zero Mostel, before Chaim Topol did the role on the London stage and then the movie). I haven't read that one yet, but I look forward to it I listen to the soundtrack in my car everytime I drive. it's fun to sing along with "If I Was A Rich Man" and "Sunrise,Sunset" and play the wedding procession music and the bottle dance music really loud, hehe.

I love it so much that I bought the "Tevye And His Daughters" and "Mottel The Cantor's Son"(not the same Mottel as in FOTR,that Mottel is a tailor) by Sholem Aleichem and read them. The stories were great. Tevye has seven daughters in the stories.

Hedy Lamarr: The Most Beautiful Star!
daddysprimadonna replied to GarboManiac's topic in General Discussions
I don't think that anyone could see this movie and ever again think that Hedy's acting was wooden. I think it's just that Hollywood slotted her into the "beautiful" slot and dismissed everything else about her. I think she would've been much more acclaimed for her talent if she'd made more films in Europe. She was completely expressive and mobile in this movie, and it's only the beginning of her career. I really have to wonder how seriously she took acting in Hollywood, considering some of the roles she wound up in. I wonder if she quickly saw the handwriting on the wall as far as being typecast, and decided to just cash in. She would've gotten much more suitable roles in European films,I think. After all,her very first leading role there had more depth and made use of much more than just her beauty(astounding as it was) than anything she ever did in Hollywood. The Europeans seemed to be kind of "perverse" about not doing the obvious,ie casting beautiful women as only beautiful women. They liked to "mix it up" a little. -
Forgotten or Underrated Actress of the Golden Era

Oh my, I had forgotten that that was her in "The Philadelphia Story"! I always think of her as the down-to-earth, wise and tolerant woman as in her role in "Susan And God". But she could crack wise with the best of them, and was attractive to boot -

Ruth Hussey-she has really grown on me ever since I saw her in "Susan And God",and now when I see her in the cast of a movie,I watch it to see her,if nothing else. -

Toby Wing-she was darling in the "Young & Healthy" number with Dick Powell in "42nd Street" Mae Marsh-an excellent actress from the silent era,one of DW Griffith's protogees, much appreciated as an actress in her time, but forgotten now. Dorothy Gish-overshadowed by her awesomely talented sister Lillian, but a charming comedienne, especially as "The Little Disturber" in "Hearts Of The World" and as "The Mountain Girl"(I can't remember the actual title of the role,if that's not it) in "Intolerance". -

I loved the symbolism-for some reason,I love it in European films, and think it's usually heavy-handed in American ones. I loved the pearls-the gem of debutantes and virgin brides-being broken when she finally had "her maidenhood breached",LOL. For a woman being stuck with pins by the director during the filming of her "ecstatic" facial expressions, she certainly looked like a young woman tasting "ecstasy" for the first time! -
Hedy Lamarr: The Most Beautiful Star!
daddysprimadonna replied to GarboManiac's topic in General Discussions
Yes, and I loved it! This movie is more erotic than any thousands of hours of two actors rolling in the hay. Hedy is beautiful in it,that's a given-she hadn't grown into the height of her mature classical beauty yet,but youth has a beauty all its own-the sweet curve of a round cheek, the vulnerable outline of her lips, the firm roundness of the arm. She had such a sweet young beauty, and then as a grown woman, the classic perfection-and brains too-God surely smiled upon the formation of Hedwig Keisler! -

Hahahahah! "I had to sleep with a nincompoop"! This movie I only look forward to,for the chance of just looking at Hedy-I don't think that I'm going to care for the movie itself very much. But I'll give it a chance. I like Bob Hope, but I like him best with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour in the "Road" movies. I didn't like the Road movies without Dorothy Lamour in them. The sex jokes got too juvenile, for one thing, and Dorothy just seemed "part of the gang" more than her replacements ever did. -
