How did you all get into classic movies what is you story?
daddysprimadonna replied to inglis's topic in General Discussions
SusannO, same here I love old jazz music, especially the stuff from the Twenties(you know, all that music that had the xylophone in it,that kind of stuff. There's a great internet radio site that has a few stations that play that kind of stuff,as well as jazz from the Thirties, novelty numbers from that era,big Band,cabaret-including some German cabaret stuff,etc-great stations. The site is Live 365,I'll look up the name of some of the particular stations later if you like ) I wish I'd grown up then,also-seeing a movie from Hollywood's Golden era in one of the classic "movie palaces" had to be an experience to which nothing today could compare, especially the present-day generic "cineplex" movie experience. I could even imagine getting dressed up(with hat and gloves,LOL) to go see a movie back then, and it being an "event". Not everytime, but for some of them. I wish that there was still such a thing! I'm not so very very young, but I don't mind allowing people to think that I am -
"Superman: Returns," does it's history due justice!
daddysprimadonna replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
I've done it too, when I felt really passionate about something. I think that mostly, none of us here really go off-subject in that way very much. (I'm really bad about getting off-topic in other, silly ways though,LOL! I just can't help it sometimes,I love to chat with y'all ) So,back on-topic-I probably wouldn't go see "Superman" anyway, because as I've stated(many times,I think, hehe),I just don't really care about modern movies.(I have a few minor infractions of my own rule,LOL,but as it's my rule,I can break it ) I did watch the Christopher Reeve Superman just to keep my husband company one time, and it was OK,but I only did it for that reason. I really, really don't care for remakes(again, with exceptions-I definitely agree with Mr Robert Osborne that the Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon" is the definite one). I often like the silent versions of films that I've already seen in a later incarnation-but not neccesarily more than the first version that I've seen.Sometimes,yes. "Superman: Returns," does it's history due justice!

It was scary just hearing about it. He saw a lot of things there that I won't go into, both because this isn't the place, and because I really couldn't grasp a lot of what he told me-it's just beyond the conception of anyone who wasn't there. -

He got home a few months ago,and glad to see his wife and three daughters. Also glad to be home, considering that a Humvee in which he was riding was blown up. Everyone got out OK,except one Iraqi guy with them lost an arm. My brother is working near home for a while, then he plans to volunteer to go back. Call him crazy,he believes in the job we're doing there, and he's proud of the gains that the Iraqis are making for themselves. My brother was involved in helping train some of them. -

Thanks MattHelm. Great posts. I love that your posts are cogent and coherent, and informative. -
They're both pics of Daniela Bianchi, who played "Tatiana Romanova" in "From Russia With Love". My favorite Bond girl in my favorite Bond movie

"Edge of Outside" great exc. hate Peckinpah films! ack!
daddysprimadonna replied to Marthanna's topic in General Discussions
I agree. As I said,I'm sure that Peckinpah is a fine director,I would have to think so,because he's widely acclaimed, and I can't watch his films, due to the violence, enough to form an opinion for myself. I just can't watch graphic violence. I certainly woudn't discourage anyone who can stomach the violence from giving his films a look. -
I can't watch Jane Fonda in anything,but I won't go into that
-
I just watched that movie the other night,it was "Goldfinger". Why doesn't TCM show the old Bond movies(namely the Sean Connery ones, before Roger Moore & Co made them into cartoons)? I assume that they don't have the rights or something? Because they certainly show newer films than that. "From Russia With Love" is my all-time favorite Bond movie-I think it's the one that took Bond, and the story, most seriously, and Daniela Bianchi is gorgeous in it as "Tatiana Romanova". And Lotte Lenya is a hoot as "Klemp",LOL.

Perfection! -
think that he preferred a particular type of blonde-the cool,aloof,self-possessed,slim,chic blonde, not the "sexpot" or cutesy blondes. For instance,Jean Harlow or Betty Grable or Doris Day-I love them, but I don't think that they could've ever been Hitchcock blondes. Grace Kelly was perfection in "Rear Window". In "Vertigo", the difference is clear-Kim Novak, while she's impersonating the wife,is a Hitchcock blonde, while Barbara Bel Geddes, though just as blonde,is not a Hitchcock blonde. My problem with "Vertigo" is the same as someone else posted here-why did the husband go through all those convolutions to get rid of his wife, when he could've just pushed her from the bell tower? And I can't believe that kim Novak was so unhinged as to leap from the tower just because Jimmy Stewart was on to her-as her "real self",she seemed too tough to do something like that.

I knew that I couldn't like his films from the little that I already knew, and thank you Matt, you just made me certain of it. I hate violence,I can't take it. And especially to animals! Even if it's just on-screen. His films may have great artistic merit, but I'd never be able to get past that. -
TCM, I do thank you for showing all these movies featuring all these wonderful dogs-but are you trying to give me high blood pressure??!! The only reason I can get through them is because I know they'll be alright in the end! The short where the old man is going "put his dog out his misery"-I boo-hooed all the way through, and I was screaming at that man to not shoot that dog! Thank God he didn't,I wouldn't have had any peace for a week! Geeze, these movies need some sort of warning,LOL!

And I loved Eva Marie Saint's voice in "North By Northwest"-it's sexy, but not stereotypically sexy-not "breathy" or husky or little girlish, just sexy. Ever since I first saw Grace Kelly in "Rear Window",I've wondered where I could find a vintage Mark Cross overnight case just like hers in the movie-great product tie-in,that!
-
I agree with those choices. Hitchcock blondes are always elegant and subtly beautiful. The more I see "North By Northwest", the more I appreciate Eva Marie Saint. He even managed to make Kim Novak appear coolly elegant-I always thought that she was attractive, but along the lines of "truck driver queen" until she got the Hitchcock treatment. Tuesday Weld was another. I love the way he dressed his blondes for his films-it takes an Englishman to understand how to dress a woman with chic,I believe

Thanks I downloaded it from some website where they make them,I want to learn to make them myself(I know nothing about using Photoshop,Paint Shop Pro,etc).

I see what you mean. I'm surprised that the TCM forums don't support the "comic" font,it's a common one.
-
I just tried the "Fiolex Girls" font in preview, and I've tried the "comic" font,as it's more common, but neither one will show up. Message was edited by:

David, you seem like the right person to ask this question-I'm able to change the font color, and the font size,on the TCM forum, but I haven't been able to use different font types here, either alone or in conjunction with the change in font size or color-does that mean that it's probably not enabled here?
