To those seeing "The Wiz" for the first time...
daddysprimadonna replied to filmlover's topic in General Discussions
It's one of those films that is so bad you can't stop watching to see how much worse it can get. Dang, I think you're right. I kept telling myself that I was suffering through it just to be sure to catch the beginning of the silent versions when they start, but I think you're right,it's like watching a train wreck. I'm expecting the silent versions to be at least palatable, because I imagine that in those days they would have still considered this a children's story, with all the innocence and magic that that would mean in a movie,so at the least they would be true to the heart of the story. IOW,no hookers and disco instead of wicked witches and munchkins -
Not into "Gone With The Wind" or "Don Juan"?

Not into GWTW or John Barrymore as "Don Juan"??!! Blasphemy! Just kidding -

Nipsey Russell's voice sounds familiar-did he do one of the "Schoolhouse Rock" segments? I'm thinking of "Naughty Number Nine",I think. -

I thought I'd give it a shot, even though I don't generally like remakes of any classic, but I'm already gagging at this movie. I really hate the pop pschycology in it-"oh Scarecrow, all you need is some confidence, that's all that's been keeping you from coming down"-and the photography is just awful-it's muddy and dark. It's not my screen, because I just watched the classic version and it was as clear and bright as a new penny. Diana Ross' "little girl voice" is killing me,LOL.The whole sense of wonderment, magic, innocence, and fantasy of the original is completely gone. I do look forward to seeing the two silent versions. This just goes to show how great the 1939 version really was. -
I brought it up over in the "Norma" thread. It was indeed lazy eye,and she did exercises to control it for filming. I've read somewhere that It's a common condition in those of Scotch ancestry, who have light blue eyes(as she was and did). She also didn't have the best legs-she wasn't a perfect beauty like Hedy-but she knew how to minimise her faults and maximise her good points, and in my eyes she was quite effective-she always appears beautiful to me

Larry's Classic Star Reminiscences
daddysprimadonna replied to vecchiolarry's topic in General Discussions
Mr Larry, I'm the who is mortified, I do apologise! I misunderstood what I read in another post,my apologies to your mother! I'm sure that she is lovely at any age Once I find a copy of "Majesty" (wish me luck, talk about "one-horse towns",and even that horse swam away with Hurricane Katrina,LOL),I'll post a pic. It may be a bit,I may have to order it online. -

Oops, I suppose that he doesn't count, since he was mechanical. But if he does, then I'm adding "Godzilla"- I love Godzilla, but only in the old cheesy Godzilla movies, not that recent one with the computer-generated special effects. What's the acronym for that again, anyone? -

I'd like to see the picture also,so I'll go hunt down a copy of "Majesty" magazine here. Your mother burned her whalebone corset??!! I bet that smelled lovely,LOL! And to think that the bra-burners thought that they were so innovative, hehe -
I note that you're from Canada-as I've posted elsewhere,my two most favorite actresses are from Canada-Mary Pickford and Norma Shearer-is it in the water, LOL?
-
I agree, I think that Carole Lombard was gorgeous in "In Name Only". She was fine as a dramatic actress. Her death in the airplane crash was a tragedy and a loss in more ways than one. Clark Gable was never the same. And the screen lost a beautiful presence of great potential-just look at what she left behind in her short time. I believe that she was only 33 when she died?
-
I'm not overly fond of the little crumb-snatchers myself, but Mary Pickford is winsome enough to make me forgive their presence in her movies They're not in all her movies, and in spite of her present-day image, she was most decidedly NOT syrupy-sweet in her movies(except for "Pollyanna",which she herself considered too syrupy,so she made the director add a scene in which she sees a fly,and says to the fly, "Little fly, would you like to be in heaven?" She smooshes the fly,and says "Now you are!" LOL. In real life, she had quite an Irish, bawdy(but not crude) sense of humor.

I love when he pushes the lawn mower with his head up to the hole under the fence to keep the "back door dog" out -
I haven't yet seen a lot of the other ones, but I've seen "The Bad And The Beautiful" and "Singing In The Rain" and I totally agree with you there.
-
"Sparrows" or "Daddy Long Legs"? They both had a lot of kids in them Mary Pickford loved working with children, unlike,oh,WC Fields,LOL. I understand that he wouldn't have minded boiling them in oil! Message was edited by: uh, boiling them IN oil! daddysprimadonna

George was a little scoundrel How can we forget the inimitable "Asta" in the "Thin Man" series? I love the scene from the second Thin Man movie(forgot the title!), where Asta goes to see Mrs Asta, and chases away the interloper! That scene is hilarious, and Asta was a little ham! -

I've seen Daisy Kenyon, and I don't remember that scene, dog lover that I am. I'll make a note to watch for it the next time that TCM shows Daisy Kenyon. -
I don't think that it's been that long since TCM did show it,as I recently ( some months ago) bought the DVD based on seeing and enjoying it on TCM.

I've not watched awards shows of any kind for years-for one thing, there's so many of them now, that they're meaningless, and for another thing,I suppose that they've never been perfectly objective, but these days the pandering is shameless.
-
I'll have to nominate Lassie,in about anything, for now-both because it's true, and because I need to refresh my memory on this subject

The ending of Waterworld with Kevin Costner when I realized I spent $8.50 to watch that garbage! LOL! I say that I never watch modern movies-there are a few miniscule exceptions, and "Immortal Beloved" ,about Beethoven,is one. I cry everytime that I see the heartbreaking ending of that movie. It's a "what if" kind of ending, based on a bit of historical fact-it could've been true, but nobody really knows,I gather. Because it's not a really old movie,I won't spoil it for those who may ever wish to see it,but if you do,you'll see what I mean. Nothing's sadder than a lifetime of unhappiness caused by crossed wires. But oh that glorious music!
-
OK, I'm back, and I'll mosey on over to the GWTW thread in the "Essentials" forum GM, I hope to be able to see "Tortilla Flat" soon. You got the "feelthy piano" reference in one,LOL. I just love my fellow classic movie fans, who else would've understood immediately

A wonderful well-deserved tribute

Hi GM,either the picture was changed at the site from which I linked it,or it was edited for being too large, here. I'll try to find a smaller one later this evening
