In the book, is there any mention of an abortion? I.e. that they have no children because Virginia had an abortion. The "son" is created to fill in the empty space created by that.
There is no mention of abortion, only that George and Martha cannot have children.

I believe the son is just a fantasy for them because they cannot deal with the brutal reality of their lives. George and Martha like to play strange games and the son was supposed to one only for their personal fantasies, when Martha mentions him to someone else, George kills him, according to the rules of their game.

Sundays and Cybele has been a difficult film to find. Is it now readily available on YouTube? Det. Jim, thank you for mentioning it.
It had been unavailable for many years, when it was finally released on DVD/Blu Ray by the Criterion collection in 2016 I grabbed it right away. I don't think it is on Youtube.

This French film won the Academy Award for best Foreign Language film for 1962. It's about a shell shocked soldier (Hardy Kruger) who develops a friendship with an abandoned little girl (Patricia Gozzi) staying in Catholic boarding school.
I love this film, it is touching and very unique. The scenes between Kruger and Gozzi are innocent and sweet, and the ending heart breaking. The final part of the film takes place during Christmas and it has become a Christmas staple for me to watch at Yuletide. The DVD has some special features and there is a great interview with now grown up Patricia Gozzi, she is still recognizable with those big expressive dark eyes. Is there anyone else a fan of this one?

NO JOKE JAMES, MAHER WAS SERIOUS FOR ONCE
He can't stand RALPH KRAMDEN
This is also the reason tv never airs THE HONEYMOONERS anymore as well Though they air All in the Family GO FIGURE?
ESSENTIALLY IT'S ALSO THE "ME TOO MOVEMENT"
& when Jackie was alive & in a superb interview just before going away on 60 Minutes he felt the need to defend RALPH & his treatment of Alice, but added he always apologized at the end
Pretty positive you can locate that interview though
He also shoots pool during the60 minutes bit, he was superb at it

And I'm going to need to see a link to where Bill Maher is calling for Jackie Gleason's statue to be taken down, as that's the type of nonsense that he typically speaks out against.
There is no link, Spence is imagining things again.

I've been trying to see this movie for years, because I've heard it's a great, underrated Christmas classic. I was disappointed it's not playing on TCM this month.
Do you guys like it?
It is not set at Christmas but it is a great movie. Judy Garland gives her best non musical performance and Robert Walker's second best after Strangers On A Train.
