Tis the summer for turning heads. This time, Robin Williams shocked by playing an obsessive sociopath in One Hour Photo.

One of my favorite 21st century films. Robin Williams gives his greatest dramatic performance as a creepy yet sympathetic loner obsessed with "perfect" family. This is a must to see in Blu Ray, as the colors in it are really striking. Excellent screenplay which explains our fascination with photographs.

The newest remake coming to the fore was Bedazzled. In place of Dudley Moore and Peter Cook, it was Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley.

It wasn't as good or funny as the original, but better than I expected. Brendan Fraser was very funny, some of the comic twists were clever, Hurley was not too bad.

It also would have been Sidney Lumet’s 95th birthday.
Not many people point out that Sean Connery was one of his most frequent leading men.
Primetime Lumet/Connery collaborations:
8:00PM The Hill- Connery was getting bored with Bond and Lumet gave him a meaty role in this military prison camp film.
10:15PM The Anderson Tapes- entertaining caper film with Dyan Cannon
2:15PM The Offence- Connery had returned to Bond in Diamonds Are Forever , in exchange he was allowed to star in this brutal film as a cop who beats a suspected child molester to death.
4:15PM Murder On The Orient Express- Connery was just one of a magnificent cast assembled by Lumet in this Agatha Christie adaptation.

I always thought she was very talented. I loved many of her hit songs, "Like A Virgin", "Material Girl","Live To Tell" (featured in her then husband Sean Penn's movie "At Close Range"), "Papa Don't Preach" ( a great video with actor Danny Aiello), "True Blue".
I enjoyed the movie "Dick Tracy" (1990) though I think she should stick to music rather than acting.

Can anyone fill us in on Give My Regards to Broad Street? Paul McCartney and his wife? Ringo Starr and his wife? What the hell was going on there?
Buy the album, forget the film.

Jon Voight then played a thinly disguised version of Pat Conroy in Conrack, the saga of the writer's years teaching in an impoverished island community in the Carolinas. Sweet film, and quietly touching.

Jon Voight had already made two of my favorite films by this time, "Midnight Cowboy" and "Deliverance". Once again the native New Yorker does an excellent Southern accent in this one. A funny, touching and realistic look at the challenges of being a teacher, I love this one. The Halloween sequence is one of the best parts. Hume Cronyn has some very funny moments as Voight's crotchety boss.

And speaking of ****, There's Something about Mary was like a bomb going off in the comedy world due to how outrageously vulgar it was by 1998 standards. As such, people went to it in droves.

I saw this with low expectations, but it turned out to be hilarious, one of the funniest movies ever. Matt Dillon was surprisingly skillful at comic timing as the sleazy private eye. A lot of politically incorrect humor and gross out gags, not for the easily offended. Unfortunately it lead to several imitations, none of which measure up.

4:00 p.m. Ride the High Country (1962)
One of my favorite westerns and 1962 is my favorite year in film.
Randolph Scott retired after this and Joel McCrea would make only 3 more films before also throwing in the towel.
Sam Peckinpah had his first hit film and has a great supporting cast. The violence is less bloody than his later films but some scenes are still pretty shocking.
The villains are the dirtiest, nastiest bunch of creeps in westerns up to that time, played by James Drury, Warren Oates, John Anderson, LQ Jones and John Davis Chandler.
