    Term of Trial (1962)

    I love this one. 8/10.

The dank, dreary look of early 1960s England is one of the best things about it. Olivier is excellent, avoiding the overacting he would do later in his life. Signoret is good too, though not a very likable character here.

    13 West Street (1962)

I give it 5/10. It was similar to "Key Witness" but not as good. Ladd's puffy eyes and once sharp but now ragged voice were a distraction. Mark Slade was a good baby faced thug, he would play similar creeps in 1970s crime shows like "The Rookies"

  3. I thought this was great, 8/10.

It was a good followup to "The Strangler" which was shown right before it. That film had the obese and weird Victor Buono and this one has the handsome and outwardly normal Grant Williams as the killer. Buono was dominated by his mother and Williams had a problem with his father.

The direction (by Owen Crump, who I had never heard of) was good, with eye closeups and flashbacks. There was some bizarre hints of incest in some of those scenes. The final moments are very suspenseful. I had seen Williams only in "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and always thought he gave a fine performance and does so again here. Shirley Knight was good as the receptionist who falls for Williams, she was having a great year in 1962, appearing in another exploitation classic "House Of Women" and got an Oscar nomination for "Sweet Bird Of Youth". Onslow Stevens plays the psychiatrist and this turned out to be his last film. Ironically he had some mental issues of his own as well as alcoholism.

  4. TCM is loaded with psycho killers this morning. "The Strangler" stars Victor Buono as psychotic murderer of nurses. If you have never seen it and you like lurid 1960s films about mad killers I highly recommend this one. Buono has a rare leading role and he is excellent, being very menacing and somewhat sympathetic at times. Ellen Corby plays his nagging mother who drives him to kill. The B&W cinematography is outstanding, the sets are low budget but I didn't mind that. Please let me know what you think if you have ever seen it or watch it for the first time today. It is on at 9:30AM EST.

I loved how crazy Cody Jarrett was, but I thought Cagney downplayed the psycho side most of the time.  I thought he was brilliant and I was greatly disappointed to hear Muller mention is dislike for this film.  While I was watching it I thought it was such a brave and bold move for Cagney at that time in his career, but that all came apart when I heard he hated it.

Cagney had said his autobiography that people would often ask him how did he psych himself up to pull off that scene when he goes berserk in the prison mess hall. He never had to psych himself up for a scene, he just said that he sometimes heard the screams of the mentally ill in asylums in New York to know what he needed to do.

It sounds like she missed more notes in this trailer than Judy did in her entire career.

I had no idea this was being made, it makes me want to see it, though I will keep my expectations low.

Original intent was name actresses appearing nude, not the nudity itself, I don't recall either the black actress or the white actress as being in more films but I could be wrong.

The black actress, Thelma Oliver appeared in "Black Like Me" (1964) with James Whitmore. She also did Broadway appearing in the original "Sweet Charity" in the role Paula Kelly would play in the film.

There's only a few in which he's NOT a singer or that even have ANY of him singing in them. WILD IN THE COUNTRY('61) is the only one I can think of,...

I think "Flaming Star" is his best. He is heard singing the title song over the credits and sings some western folk song with a guitar at the beginning and that's it. It's a challenging role of a half white half Indian who torn between two worlds. Veteran supporting cast (Dolores Del Rio and John McIntire) along with great director Don Siegel also help.

Japanese War Bride was directed by King Vidor and was a saga detailing the fight against anti-Japanese feelings.

This is a good one though seems to be very hard to find today. I saw it in a revival theater several years ago. Don Taylor (he was the young cop in "The Naked City") is a WWII vet returning home with his Japanese wife (Shirley Yamaguchi). Taylor's friend Cameron Mitchell is accepting but Mitchell's wife Marie Windsor is not.

  10. I was going over my lists of my favorite films and I noticed that most were "guy" movies with male leads though some of those had great actresses in good roles. Below are 10 actresses which are not necessarily my favorite ones (though some are) but appeared in my favorite films. I included my favorite film in which they appeared. Does anyone have a list like this, or what are your favorite films by these actresses?

    1. Teresa Wright - Shadow Of A Doubt

    2. Eleanor Parker- Detective Story

    3. Deborah Kerr-From Here To Eternity

    4. Eva Marie Saint-On The Waterfront

    5. Maureen O'Hara-Miracle On 34th Street

    6. Shelley Winters-Night Of The Hunter

    7. Mia Farrow-Rosemary's Baby

    8. Natalie Wood-West Side Story

    9. Bette Davis-What Ever Happened To Baby Jane

    10. Doris Day-Lover Come Back
