It's A Great Life (1943) Movies! TV Network 5/10 Mr Dithers sends Dagwood on a an errand to look into buying a house, but he misunderstands and buys a horse instead. #13 in the series and the first one without Blondie's name in the title. It's not one of the better entries, but some amusing bits. Cookie is now walking and talking and Alexander getting bigger. The most interesting things are the topical references to WWII where Alexander charges money for kids to whack a picture of Hitler bending over. The guest actor is Hugh Herbert as a scatterbrained client who likes horses.

When Cornel Wilde was a guest on I Love Lucy, he was plugging this film. I wonder what Lucy fans thought when they saw this brutal, edgy gangster film.

That's OK. Why do you think he rides away at the end? -
Love With The Proper Stranger (1963) TCM 9/10 A Macy's salesgirl (Natalie Wood) has a one night fling with a musician (Steve McQueen) and becomes pregnant. I had seen this a few times years ago, loved it then and still do. There is romance, comedy and stark drama all in one and it is a minor miracle that it works so well. I believe Wood gives her best performance ever in this film. She has such great chemistry with McQueen that it is a shame they never did another film together. Much of the comedy is provided by Herschel Bernardi as Natalie's blustering, over protective brother. Some hilarious moments are also provided by Tom Bosley (his film debut) as a lovesick klutz. The scene with the abortionist is still disturbing today. Other things I liked were the on location filming in New York and seeing Augusta Ciolli as McQueen's mom. She made only a handful of film appearances and I will always remember her as the drama queen Aunt Catherine in Marty (1955).

I have seen this film many times and I watched the intro and outro last night. I saw bits and pieces of it switching back from other channels. Ben and Brad Bird seemed to think the ending has Ethan riding away alone in the saddle because of the western myth of the cowboy on the trail. I thought it was a powerful ending but Ethan has not changed that much. He cannot bring himself to kill Debbie, but he cannot fully accept her. He might still think "Comanch" every time he looks at her, so I believe he is still worried he could go into a rage and kill her. So, he rides away at the end, probably never to return... -
Do you know the names of this actor and actress?

Blondie For Victory (1942) Youtube 6/10 Blondie organizes the housewives to do their part for the war effort. #12 in the series goes patriotic in WW II times but there are still many laughs here. Dagwood and Mr Dithers feel neglected by their wives. Mrs Dithers is giving away rooms to soldiers and Mr Dithers is forced into a hotel. Dagwood has take care of the children and the housework. Blondie and her squad of housewives have a job where they have to guard the dam in town. Mr Dither's has a funny double entendre line " A woman's place is in the home, not by a dam site!" Alexander and Alvin use Daisy and her puppies for the war effort, collecting money for "Buy A Bomb". There are timely references to the rubber shortage as Mr Dither's is very concerned about the tires on his car. Stuart Erwin is a guest actor playing a lonely soldier.

The Weak And The Wicked (1954) TCM 7/10 A woman (Glynis Johns) is framed for fraud and sent to prison for a year. This was a episodic but entertaining women's prison film with surprising humor. It is definitely does not have the brutality and grittiness of Caged (1950). We meet a few other inmates and get flashbacks with some of their stories. Funniest one is a one woman who comes from a family of bumbling shoplifters. The most tragic is one of a mother who leaves her two young children alone one night. Most memorable is an ironic story of two elderly women who plot the murder of the husband of one of them. Diana Dors plays the close friend and fellow inmate of Johns, however we don't get any backstory on her. Rachel Roberts has an early role as a tough talking pregnant inmate.

Man Bait (1952) TCM 7/10 A book dealer (George Brent) and his pretty shopgirl (Diana Dors) employee are drawn into a deadly blackmail plot. A first time viewing for me, this was an entertaining British thriller with a lot of talent involved. It was directed by Terence Fisher who would later direct many the best Hammer horror films. The writer was Frederick Knott who wrote two classics of suspense Dial M For Murder and Wait Until Dark. Brent is very good in one of his later roles after his glory days in the 1930s and 1940s. This was part of SUTS day for Dors, and she is listed in the credits as "introducing" when she had appeared in many films before this. It is interesting seeing her in this role, she is quite demure and sweet but is forced by a creep (Peter Reynolds) into a life of crime. It is so different from many of her later roles where she is often the scheming, seductive platinum blonde.

I agree. He is one actor who should never play villains because he always overacts horribly in these roles. Like in Broken Arrow (1996) or the 2009 remake of The Taking Of Pelham 123. He was also badly miscast in the Divine role in the musical version of Hairspray (2007)

Tom Cruise. I don't have anything against him personally, he seems like a nice guy, but I don't think he is a good actor. He was cringe worthy in The Color Of Money and A Few Good Men

One thing no one has mentioned is that Quasimodo is a cold blooded killer in this film. He tosses heavy objects on the crowd below killing several of them. He also throws another character from the tower. And he also pours molten lead on the people below, killing what seems many more. I guess that is why it is considered horror.
