Along the Great Divide (1951) This was Kirk Douglas's first western and the first time I have seen it. The plot concerns a federal marshal (Douglas) who saves an accused cattle rustler (Walter Brennan) from a lynching as he is also suspected of murder by the victim's father. Brennan swears he is innocent of the killing. Douglas takes the man in to stand trial. However he meets some opposition from the man's feisty daughter (Virginia Mayo). The title would make you think this may be a routine western adventure, but it is actually a tense, dark little psychological drama. This came out the same year as two other iconic Douglas performances, as the bitter cop in Detective Story and the heartless reporter in Ace In The Hole. Here he is a no nonsense but fair minded lawman and another fine addition to the list of great performances he has. Other notable things about it is the direction of Raoul Walsh, who keeps it tight and suspenseful. He is reunited with Virginia Mayo who appeared in one of his best remembered films White Heat just two years ago, she shows a lot of spunk and toughness in this part. Walter Brennan plays another one of his wily old coots, but since we don't know for sure if he is guilty or not, there is some danger to his performance as well.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) Cinemax On Demand 9/10 A young woman escapes a cult and tries to return to normalcy with her sister and brother in law. A rewatch for me. This one of my favorite films of the last decade. Elizabeth Olsen is excellent in the lead role. It is a quiet, slowly paced film which shows the main character Martha living with her sister in a nice house and constantly having flashbacks of her time with the cult. In some scenes we are not sure at first which time period she is in. The cult seems to be based on the Manson family, John Hawkes plays the leader in a very subdued but still disturbing performance. The film does not explain everything, so it is left to the viewer to decide what is happening. Many will be frustrated by the ending but I found it haunting. First time director Sean Durkin is someone to watch, he just had another film The Nest, which premiered at Sundance this year, I hope I get to see that.

The Naked Kiss (1964) VHS tape 10/10 An ex prostitute tries to escape her past in a new town and gets a job in a hospital as a pediatric nurse to handicapped children. I love this Sam Fuller directed lurid melodrama. I just rewatched it for the first time in years and it still stuns me with it's jaw dropping themes. The opening scene is still a shocker, as bald hooker beats and robs her pimp. Constance Towers stars as Kelly the hooker and she chooses her final client to be the local corrupt cop Griff (Anthony Eisley). In a surprising twist she gets the job in the hospital even though she had no experience. She then falls in love with the rich philanthropist war hero Grant (Michael Dante), but he has some dark secrets. None of the actors were big names, they all found work in TV but usually in guest shots. Patsy Kelly was the most familiar face in the cast as a wisecracking head nurse. I know many on here have said they hate the scene where the kids in the hospital sing a song with Kelly. I thought it was a strange and weird scene and later when we found out a twist in the story, it becomes very disturbing. After it is over, I still feel stunned at what I saw, especially since this was 1964.

I was lucky to see her in a great revival of Born Yesterday on Broadway in 1989, she was wonderful as Billie opposite Edward Asner.

I was able to see it at Film Forum in NYC, not sure where it can be seen now. I don't want to spoil anything but it is the saddest chapter in the series so far.
