    9) Act of Violence. In this film, Ryan appears as an old army friend of Van Heflin's who seeks revenge for Heflin's role in the death of their comrades during an escape attempt at a Nazi POW camp.  It seems that in exchange for food, Heflin informed the Nazi's of the escape attempt assuming (for some reason) that the POW's would not be harmed.  Ryan survived the ordeal, but was left crippled.  After seeing an article in the newspaper about Heflin receiving a civic award, Ryan is able to deduce where Heflin lives with his young wife (Janet Leigh) and child. Throughout the film, Ryan terrorizes Heflin and Leigh, trying to give Heflin his just desserts.

This was an interesting one. Ryan appears to be total nasty psycho at first but things are not all what they seem.

The seedy ambience of the small town is magnificently realized in this atmospheric small budget gem, with its flashing neons and restless crowds strolling the streets looking for some kind of action. The billboard on the town arena says it all "Boxing Wednesdays. Wrestling Fridays." The atmosphere is carnival like.

    Excellent review

That's another great thing about it. Many films of the 40s were about beautiful people in beautiful settings. This was about as gritty and nasty as any movie could look at that time.

I think ICEMAN was his last feature film, yes?

I believe so, but some sources have pointed to the JFK conspiracy film Executive Action. Another later one was The Outfit (1974) which was released after his death, It starred Robert Duvall and Karen Black but had a dream cast of old time noir character actors, not only Ryan but Timothy Carey, Richard Jaeckel, Marie Windsor, Jane Greer and Elisha Cook Jr.

  4. A great actor, here are my favorites, what are yours?

    1. Crossfire
A scary, intense performance as the anti Semitic murderer.

    2. The Set Up
He plays a washed up boxer who refuses to take a dive. His kindly wink to James Edwards may be my favorite Ryan moment on film.

    3. On Dangerous Ground
A great performance as a bitter, violent cop who is transformed by the love of a gentle woman.

    4. The Naked Spur
In contrast to the mean, grim villains in other films, this bad guy is actually pretty cheerful about his evilness. He is a sly outlaw brought in by bounty hunter James Stewart. He really seems to enjoy messing with Stewart's head.

    5. Bad Day At Black Rock
Another racist bad guy, played with much subtlety but still very dangerous.

    6. House Of Bamboo
He is a syndicate boss being investigated by undercover agent Robert Stack in this great Samuel Fuller film set in Japan.

    7. Odds Against Tomorrow
He is playing another vicious bigot, but does it very well in this tough crime drama.

    8. Billy Budd
He is the sadistic Master at arms who make life miserable for the angelic title character(Terence Stamp)

    9. The Wild Bunch
A great supporting part in this violent western,as a lawman hunting for his outlaw friend. He has one of the best lines in the film "We're after men,and I wish to God I was with some!"

    10. The Iceman Cometh
I just saw this on DVD and it is great version of the Eugene O Neill masterpiece.Ryan is brilliant as Larry, the cynical barfly who is both yearning for and afraid of death.

  5. PeeWee was Bobs Watson in Boys Town

Lionel Barrymore was Dr Gillespie in Young Dr Kildare

Cedric Hardwicke was Bishop Bienvenue in Les Miserables

The movie is On Borrowed Time

    Next-

Captain Ahab seeks help from Margot Frank and private eye Willy Clark but gets beaten up by Dragline

  6. Trog Poster

    Trog (1970) Movies Network 3/10

A missing link is discovered in an English cave, an anthropologist (Joan Crawford) studies him.

Crawford's last film and I doubt if she was very happy making this low budget  misfire, but she does keep a straight face during the ridiculous dialogue. Trog is played by Joe Corneilous, who mostly played bit parts as prize fighters in other British films. He wears monkey mask that looks like a reject from the cave men in 2001 A Space Odyssey. A lot of talk until things pick up at the end when Trog escapes and hangs a butcher on a meat hook and later kidnaps a little blond girl who reminds him of a doll he played with. The girl is played by Chloe Franks who appeared is some other good 1970s horror films like Who Slew Auntie Roo and The House That Dripped Blood.

COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA (1952) *Score: 3.5/5

Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth are both very solid in this. I had seen snippets of this several years ago, and finally sat down to watch it in its entirety.

I re watched this recently, Shirley Booth was heart breaking and deserved her Oscar. Many thought Lancaster was miscast since he was so young, but he was quite powerful in the drunk scene.
