  1. During this last Bette Davis marathon, I managed to record 10 of them. The only ones that I didn't record were "The Petrified Forest" which I already had, and for some strange reason, "Way Back Home" Otherwise, a DVD copy would be on its way to you even now.

When TCM decides to show these huge blocks of "never-to-be-played-again" pre-codes all in a row, (starting at 1:00am) we should decide who is responsible for recording what and then divy up the movies afterwards.

  2. My favorite is probably Bruce Bereford's "Breaker Morant" starring Edward Woodward, Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown in a true account of an incident during the Boer War where three Australian Soldiers were court-martialed (by the British Army) for murdering a Boer soldier of all things.

    Great movie!

  3. It turns out that Quo Vadis is shown straight through with no intermission. That is 171 minutes without interuption. I got up at the approximate halfway point (4:15am) and just waited for my first DVD to run out (right before the lion feeding scene) and then put in a new DVD...only losing about 2 minutes in the process. I could have made it easy on myself and just recorded it in 4-hour mode, but I did that with Ben-Hur recently and wasn't satisfied with the quality.

The greater loss was missing "Thank Your Lucky Stars" this morning which I mistakenly thought started at 10:30am, but really started at 7:30am. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the TCM online schedule? Mine flip-flops between ET and PT even though it always says ET in the box. Usually I catch it and reload the page, but I guess I didn't last night.

  4. Thanks sweetbabykmd,

I guess I will just set the alarm for halfway through and take my chances. Generally they insert the intermission approximately 3/5 to 2/3 of the way through a long movie, but who knows? I guess that I will after tonight.

  5. I saw that too. The Animals and the Dave Clark Five also had a couple of different numbers in that film, but Getz/Gilberto was by far the best of the lot.

  6. I pre-ordered this DVD when it was first announced. It looked like it would be right up my alley. The 1930-40's sci-fi/art deco style of movie is absolutely gorgeous. With the benefit of a better script, this could have been a great movie. As it was, I enjoyed it very much for the visuals. I hope that, based on its weak showing at the box office and less than flattering critical reviews, that Hollywood does not give up on making this kind of movie in the future.

  7. Sssshhhhh...

You are not supposed to be bringing things like this up. You will be labeled a naysayer or worse. It goes against TCM's advertised policy of showing movies unedited at least according to Martin Scorsese in TCM's oft-shown letterbox promo. I find this particularly irritating when I record a movie overnight and then wake up to find it was shown in pan & scan. I toss the dvd right in the trash as I don't consider a pan & scanned version of the movie to be the real movie. What little tolerance that I had for pan & scanned movies went out the window after 2 or 3 viewings of TCM's letterbox promo.

It's a shame too because this is a really good movie.

  8. Stoneyburke,

Here is a nice link that has lots of info on "Just Imagine"

    http://www.moviediva.com/MD_root/reviewpages/MDJustImagine.htm

It was on FXM on the day of the time change. I set the timer, went to bed and when I awoke, I rushed to the DVD recorder like a kid at Christmas. To my chagrin, the movie started one hour prior to the recording start time. Luckily, FXM rotates their old movies real regular so I anticipate it being on within a month or so. It had better be.

I saw that Groucho routine the other night.

I just checked and "Just Imagine" will air again on May 12, at 8:00am on FXM...YEA!!!!

  9. pktrekgirl,

I know what you mean. I like both Errol Flynn and Kay Francis so I am sure that I will like it. I just remember reading some lame review on IMDB that was less than favorable. Maybe they were expecting Robin Hood or Captain Blood. I usually don't worry about those kinds of things though if I like the actors.

  10. "Another Dawn", Good! I recorded that a few month's ago when they were showing the Kay Francis tribute. I haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet, but I will very soon. My all time favorite has to be "The Adventures of Robin Hood", followed by "Captain Blood" and the "Sea Hawk".

  11. T-C-M-A-M-C-F-O-X...S-E sounds better though. It's a shame about the Fox Movie Channel. There is a great deal of potential there but, they have absolutely no sense of purpose or direction. They run "Hot Shots Part Deux" something like 15 times a month every single month and then "Porkys" and some other really bad modern crap that would be applauded here if it were shown on TCM. Then, they run what appears to be the same 20 or 30 old classic movies month after month after month. This will play to my advantage though, when I am finally able to to record "Just Imagine (1930)" after blowing the last attempt due to the time change. Their (FXM) schedule is such that one could not spend more than a couple hours per week watching it. So, it appears that maybe Rupert Murdoch would not be our deliverance. What about that A-Hole from Virgin Atlantic ...Sir Richard Ramjet or whatever his name is?

  12. Gee, good thing we have broad shoulders, eh constarkel?

Yeah I know, you can't just take on one of the Stepford Wives, you got to take on all of them every single time. Not a lot of individuality in that group. But maybe that is just is just a limitation of their programing. "TCM shows it, I love it, that settles it".

It would be nice if some multi-millionaire or corporation did take those old movies off TCM's hands and started a whole new channel. Imagine a night of Bogart, Tracy, Cooper, Gable etc. going up against TCM's Primetime line up of "Good Times", "Honey I Shrunk The Kids", "He Laughed Last" and "Tootsie" oh and a couple hours of Dick Cavett interviewing Shecky Greene and George Jessel?

  13. I will explain the reference to the younger ones. hlywdkjk is referring to a quote by the esteemed vice president under Richard M. Nixon, Spiro Agnew of Maryland. Given who said it, I am proud to be one of those "Nattering Nabobs of Negativity". I bet your hero Spiro wishes he could get a nice big glass of ice water about now.

Like Stoneyburke, I have recorded just about everything I want off of TCM and I thank them for providing me with the opportunity. I guess I was wrong to expect to see nothing but classic movies on a station called "Turner Classic Movies", afterall I do pay about $30.00 extra every month in order to get it, but what's in a name?

When TCM goes by the wayside, and becomes an "all things to all people" channel catering to every conceivable taste, I wonder what they will do with all their old movies? Maybe someone else can buy the collection and get back to showing classic movies and let TCM attract the children, and foo-foo-la-la psuedo film experts with their clever themes and "cool" video montages and hope that no one notices that their programming is suffering. It seems to be working. It will be a standing joke in the future that one can remember when TCM showed classic movies.

  14. My advice to anyone that loves the old classics as I do is to get a dvd recorder, a bunch of dvds and record, record, record any and everything that looks even in the least bit interesting. TCM may not show them again. I was able to get a few obscure John Garfield movies today.

If you are a fan of the newer movies, (such as Benji, Tootsie, The Birdcage, Bad News Bears, Karate Kid, Plaza Suite, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Hook etc.) don't worry, TCMprogrammer will show them multiple times, month after month after month. Almost always in primetime too. An added benefit to these newer "klassux" is that many will be shown in their preferred pan & scan format. These movies are "showcased" to attract a new type of viewer.

It would seem that TCM is looking with a covetous eye towards the viewers of the Encore Channel. They too, have a disclaimer in their FAQ that they are at the mercy of their distributors and have no control over the format in which they show their movies.

The Dick Cavett Show is but additional evidence of TCM's attempt to gradually move away from its perceived pigeonhole. It is doubtful that much time and energy is spent by TCM in procurring older, more obscure classic films to add to their collection and least not in relation to the amount of energy spent in broadening TCM viewer's horizons with anime, TV Talk Shows, Bollywood etc.

I read in the TCM programmer's challenge thread, that TCMprogrammer wanted to "steal" some of the ideas of some of the contestants. Well, as far as I could tell, not a single one of them requested TV talk shows, Honey I shrunk the Kids, Sonny and Cher, Goldie Hawn etc. and yet there they are on the schedule.
