  1. Tonight, as I was watching Magnificent Obsession, I noticed that my 4:3 TV screen was completely filled...top to bottom and side-to-side. It had evidently been formatted to fit my screen. On the schedule, the aspect ratio is said to be 2:00/1. Why is there no disclaimer that the movie was edited at the beginning like the other channels do? Does TCM think we don't notice...or care? I recorded the movie, but once I saw that it had been edited, the DVD went straight into the trash. TCM should disclose that they will be showing an edited, Pan & Scan version of a film. That way, those of us who would like to see the real movie can avoid them.

  2. If you are referring to the Redford/Farrow (1974) version, the name of the tune is Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" It is performed by Nelson Riddle. I actually have the old vinyl LP of the soundtrack. I just checked and it does not appear that it is currently available on CD.

I hope that is what you were looking for.

  3. As a youth growing up in California, one of the rules during summer vacation was NO TV during the day. If my dad ever came home from work and caught us with the TV on ..... Anyway, one day for some reason my mother stayed home from work and decided to watch "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" on "Dialing for Dollars" I think. Well since she was watching it, I did too. I became an instant convert to classic films at that point. A few years later, my parents took me to see "Casablanca" at the "Castro Theater" in San Francisco. That set in place my love for the old movie palaces as well.

    stoneyburke,

I too, get upset at the ending of King Kong.

  4. Slagman,

Did you watch Saturday night's "Lovers and Other Strangers"? That movie was originally shot in a wide-screen format and yet it was shown in an altered pan&scan format. Had you been watching, you would have gotten your full money's worth with that film at least. Your entire screen would have been full to bursting with magnified (blurry) movie goodness!

  5. TcmProgrammr,

I appreciate your candor. If a movie is only available in pan & scan, why would it be placed on TCM's schedule in the first place? I know that TCM can prempt movies when it wants to such as in last month's Robert Montgomery movies with the Shelley Winters tribute. So why wasn't this movie (Lovers and Other Strangers) yanked? The actor/actress linkage was THAT important to adhere to? And if it was, than maybe the person responsible for linking those movies should have came up with an alternate. To put a pan & scanned and possibly edited movie (and let's be honest, not a very good one at that) in there to make it work is kind of like using a file and scissors to put together a jig-saw puzzle.

  6. lzcutter, I did not call you a sycophant, I am sorry if it looked like I was responding to you. You actually have something worth while to say and while I do not always agree with you, I respect your point of view.

I was speaking to those one-sentence-canned-comment-charlies out there.

  7. No, we won't get "The Glass Key" but I bet we're in for some "Ghost and Mr Chicken" and "Incredible Mr Limpet" in the upcoming month and most likely at the expense of the Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy features. Tonight's Pan and Scanned and Edited For Content showing of "Lovers and Other Strangers" shows a blatant disregard for lovers of classic film. Notice that the mindless sycophants haven't chimed in, in defense of this one? They are all waiting for someone else to post first then they can bleat their imbecilic "You Rock Dude" and "You are a Gem" posts. There is nothing more pathetic than some geek deciding to try to be "cool". Hey sycophants, do you think TCM gives a damn that you love every thing that they do? Of course they don't care, you would go along with anything that they do anyway. If they decided to show a month of Barney the Dinosaur, I can guarantee there is at least one person on this forum that will be in full support.

  8. At least it appears that they edited out the "Laugh Track". Am I to assume then, if somebody switched out "Sleepless in Seattle", or "Bridges of Madison County" with a porno movie, TCM would just air it in its entirety like it is doing with "Lovers and Other Strangers"? This is not quality programming!

  9. This thing looks like a made for TV movie! I know it is formatted to fit my screen perfectly. It was originally rated R so I suspect it has been edited for objectionable content as well. The soundtrack is provided by "The Love American (Out of)Style Band" Maybe we are being "treated" to a glimpse of TCM's exciting future? The only thing missing is the commercials.

  10. Having once watched "Summer Lovers" myself, I can attest to the fact that the entire movie is made up of idiotic segments just like that which sweetbabykmd describes. Nobody in that movie should have ever worked again if there was any justice.

  11. And how many times are they going to run "Karate Kid" and only during primetime? They are really pushing that movie for some reason. I think it will be three months in a row. Is there something about that movie, as well the "China Syndrome" and "Sleepless in Seattle" that is supposed to appeal to lovers of classic films? TCMs primetime showings seem to be repeated month after month after month. I fully agree that they are giving us the worst of the academy rather than the best. How many of the modern movies have they shown that have won anything major? For instance, the "Karate Kid" was nominated for best supporting actor, but lost, so why the multiple showings? How about the other night when TCM and TBS were both running "Back to the Future" at the same time? Is there anyone that wants to see "Airport" on the schedule month after month? I know there are some on this forum that are handy with the numbers of films shown by decade for any given year, how about a similar report on the repeats? Another thing, everybody is slapping TCM on the back for their clever linkage of all the movies on their February schedule. It is obvious that they simply took "The Karate Kid", "Sleepless In Seattle"and "China Syndrome" and simply worked backwards, knowing full well that once they got to "Airport" that the rest would be easy as everybody is in that movie.

  12. You're seeing a whole team of psychiatrists aren't you? What does all this bile that you are spewing have to do with "Looking for Help in Naming Computer"?

Are you saying that just because Melanie lives in Biloxi that she is a racist? How many times did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby? If you have a lot of pent-up frustrations steming from your civil right's experiences in the 60's, there have got to be better venues than this to voice them. I don't buy that "I was just testing you to see if you could spell" line for one second either. I don't think that you do even know how to spell "Biloxi".

  13. And Mongo, don't forget the absolutely delightful "Glass Bottom Boat" that TCM will be showing on April 3, in a rare primetime showing.

If you could only take one song with you to a desert island, which of these two delightful morsels would you choose: "The Glass Bottom Boat" duet with Doris Day and Arthur Godfrey or "You're so very Scrumptious" from "Chitty Chitty Bang-Bang"?

    Movie Heaven, Indeed!

  14. Can you imagine getting a surprise gift box full of these titles? Hello e-bay! Aside from the awful, brain-rotting TV shows (excellent re-watchability!!!) the one movie that they threw in ("Up The Academy") is so exceptionally bad that I would rank it right up there with "Manos, Hands of Fate" and the "Harrod Experiment"as among the worst movies of all time. This is what makes money these days?

  15. jarhfive,

I am glad that you liked my comment. A scrolling message to that affect would have helped poor Fred C. Dobbs as he thought there was something wrong with his satellite. He must have thought that they were "trying to put one over on him."

There have got to be thousands of reasons why "They Died With Their Boots On" could never be re-made in addition to the fact that there will never be another Errol Flynn.
