There, I feel better now.

As a reluctant subscriber to HBO, I can say with absolute certainty that TCM blows their movie programming away month after month. The only reason that a subscribe is to see their original series ie. Deadwood, Rome, Carnivale and The Sopranos. If it weren't for those shows, I would drop HBO like a hot rock. Their monthly movie line up consists almost entirely of pan/scan versions of movies that have already been aired on TBS, TNT, AMC, the rest of the networks and the airlines. What irks me, is that TCM will show some of these HBO quality films occasionally like "The Freshman","Wolf" and "Blew Lagoon" along with the odd Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin movies. Fortunately, it is only occasionally. I worry sometimes that TCM feels that it must try to attract new viewers by offering this drek--along with the unfortunate "Bollywood" fiasco. What TCM must realise is that there are countless venues for this kind of low quality programming and those that choose to watch TCM are here to escape precisely that.

Then congratulations to you!!! The secondary HBO channels, Encore and most of all network television hack the ends off all of their programming in order for you to see the intensity of expressions that you yearn for with your 27" and smaller televisions. You are so lucky!! Some of us scour the programming schedules in order to find programming in its original aspect ratio, while you, the fortunate one, can watch your altered pan and scan movies virtually everywhere. It may interest you to know that there are DVD rental services that offer further alterations such as the editing out of objectionable content. TCM and to a lesser extent, The Fox Movie channels are two of the few venues available to those who actually like to watch the whole movie. Why subject yourself?

Your best bet would be to just get a DVD recorder and record them for yourself. Very good DVRs can be had for less than $200 these days and the best blank DVDs are around .50 a piece when purchased online. It seems that that digitizing the old classics has taken a back seat to issuing entire TV sitcom series runs from the 70s and 80s...so this is probably your only option.

Wolf?
in Hot Topics
I noticed on the October schedule that the much acclaimed "Wolf" (1994) starring Jack Nicholson will be given a primetime showing. If any of you have had the pleasure to see this modern masterpiece, how would you say it compares to Nicholson's lesser works such as "Five Easy Pieces" "Chinatown" or "Carnal Knowledge"?

SEMANTICS? I have nothing against foreign films and I resent the previous post's inferring that I did. If I had meant "American" Classics, I would have stated exactly that. I thoroughly enjoy foreign classic films as a matter of fact, but have never bought into this hoopla about Bollywood. I find it amusing that someone who considers "Gone With The Wind" to be a "boring Soap Opera of a film" would be preaching to me about anything related to cinema. As you are a self professed "well rounded true fan of cinema" I would be interested in hearing what YOU define as a classic film. If it is a remake of "Chicago" Bollywood style then I will just stick with impressing sweetbabykmd.

It sounds like what most of you would like to have is your very own Bollywood Channel showing Bollywood and nothing but Bollywood. You should lobby your cable provider. What I would like is more real classic films to be shown on TCM. I know that I am probably in the minority here.

Enough June Allyson Already!!!!

I appreciate that you are a fan of hers and I wasn't suggesting that she be removed from the schedule entirely. She just seems to me to be on the TCM schedule a lot more than any other actress. I would love it if Bette Davis, Gene Tierney, Carole Lombard, Barbara Stanwyck, to name a few, were on nearly as much.
