  1. I liked all of them, but especially their early ones. I found the one with Marilyn Monroe sad, as they were all old at that point. The asides from Groucho in the early movies were priceless, much as his comments on his television show were.

bobhopefan1940, I know it's OT, but I liked Hope in the Road movies and especially in the crime movies he did. I hated Crosby.

But, I caught some of a movie he did with Lucille Ball where he tried to have a tryst and I found myself embarrassed for both of them. What do you think of the efforts Hope made later in his career?

  2. Thanks for the pictures, GM. Yes, those were in the vein of the shots of her at home. Very MM-ish before she became a star. Naturally beautiful. Still and all, amazing what lights and makeup can do.

From the film I saw, it appeared that Stiller had a Svenagli effect on Garbo. She no doubt outgrew him and the rest, as they say, is history.

  3. It's sad, isn't it? But it's a reflection of the concentration of everything that is 'now'. I wonder what these same young people know about World War II?

I wonder, jdb1, if you remember the commercials, oh they must go back to the 1970s, with the English actor who oftentimes plays a butler or manservant, selling albums (real vinyl records, that's how long ago these adverts were) containg pieces of classical music? For example, they might have had Beethoven's Ninth and on the next track would have Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King.

It was shortly after I graduated college, and I remember my music teacher decrying these compilations. I didn't know enough about music then to understand the importance of immersing oneself in the entire piece.

But in their day, I guess these albums were the promos of classical music!!!! :0

But to the point, I understand that music and art classes are considered expendable in some schools. That is criminal, in my opinion.

And GM, that picture is just lovely.

  4. No, not yet inglis. One of these days, though. It seems the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get!

Stop in when you can, hopefully we'll all still be here.

And don't forget that pseudo-Latin phrase:

    Illegitimi Non Carborundum

  5. I'll be darned. From Wikipedia:

Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate.

I thought Emo was that loathesome comedian/mime/singer, whatever he was. Who the heck was that then??

  6. is more oriented toward mentally disturbed young people and drug addicts, in my opinion. I don?t want that type people to start showing up here on this board.

Fred, I admire you and what you have done in your life, and have to say I am surprised at this. But of course I respect your right to say it.

I am one of the most ornery people I know, yet I imagine with all that I am open-minded. I love the promo, for reasons I have shared.

I like motorcycles, but am too chicken to ride them. I like tattoos, but am too chicken to get them. I do wear a buzz cut and am not into makeup or possessions. I love my dog more than most of the people I know.

I hate Charlie Chaplin, Leonardo DiCaprio and most movies made after 1955.

I am a-political, a-religious and a-corporate America. I am old, I speak my mind and I enjoy being all of the aforementioned.

IF all this makes me 'mentally disturbed', then so be it.

But I am simply asTOUNDed at the reaction to this promo. I imagine Raygun has the Rob Zombie promo up and running, so I can't wait to see if I hate or love that one. I watched the Sept. promo again, and still love it. Honestly, it reminds me of the best of MTV, and of the Chuck Braverman clips on the Smothers Brothers Show.

Most of all, I am enjoying reading the diverse opinions that this promo has generated and also enjoying the fact that we are talking about it while trying to be polite.

  7. No, reality shows are not mine either. I stopped being interested when Pedro Zamora was near death on Real World on MTV. And now I hate Food Network's guts for their jump on the bandwagon.

But I appreciate the varied and wonderful tastes of the people on this board.

Be sure to be on the lookout for the moment near the end when one of the workers on the ship takes a little boy left behind into his care, however briefly. It makes me sad just thinking about it.

  8. Yup, exactly! But if there weren't the choices of Amazing Race and Project Runway, there would only be vanilla ice cream in the stores. No need for chocolate or strawberry.

I watch South Park and reruns of Dead Like Me, and they're certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

Then again, my favorite ice cream is coffee.

  9. Mr.Therapy,

mrsl left for our sake, and I appreciate that. That idiot troll followed her on every thread where she posted, and she left so we could continue to enjoy the board. IMO that means having your '**** together'. Since you are still around, you obviously don't know the meaning of Darwinism. Mrsl does and proved it by leaving, so you can put your Darwinism where the sun don't shine. I miss her and hope she comes back after a break to get her '**** together' (pardon me, mrsl).

And you are still a pompous ****, SamTherapy.

And yes, we do reap what we sow, so I pity you, SamTherapy.

  10. I agree, amerks96. I've loved it since way back when there wasn't cable. I loved it when I was able to tape it from AMC but didn't tape the ending. I loved it when TCM finally programmed it and I was able to tape it, complete with the lovely ending, ods bodkin!

I loved watching part of it again yesterday, and was as happy seeing the stars coming down on Costello and Reynolds (I had forgotten how much I loved that satin blouse of hers) for the umpteenth time as I was when I first saw it.

Interesting comment by Ben M., that the director worked on several movies with the team after that.

In case you couldn't tell, I loved that movie!!!!

  11. ?After Dark, My Sweet? is the movie that eluded audiences; it grossed less than $3 million, has been almost forgotten, and remains one of the purest and most uncompromising of modern films noir. It captures above all the lonely, exhausted lives of its characters.

Wow. Someday, when I get that DVD player, and get NetFlix, this will be one of the first movies on my list.

    Thanks, JonParker.
