  1. Yes, Carl Reiner (the writer) actually lived in New Rochelle for awhile....although he lived in the nice part of town and I lived in the grittier part of town!

At the time, though, I didn't realize it and loved every minute of growing up there.

  2. LOL, mrsl, hey I'm the first to do a Chicken Little on TCM and commercials, but since I'm into techno music (or whatever the heck MUSE is) and MTV videos, I'm enjoying these. So, am I a hypocrite since these are commercials? Or are they not commercials, since they're self promotion, which even PBS does?

I don't know anymore, I'm so confused lately on these boards.

To my mind, mrsl, a commercial is something wherein a sponsor has paid for advertising time and is trying to make you believe you need a BRAND NEW cell phone, because the perfectly good cell phone you have is outdated or ugly or has cooties or something. In other words, create a need and fulfill it aka conspicuous consumption.

These videos that Raygun created, imo, are the best that the medium of video has to offer. Again, IN MY OPINION. I like loud music and erratic images and a cohesive theme, IF done well.

In addition, I just realized what MUSE's Time Is Running Out reminds me of, at least the beginning chords. It reminds me of Twin Peaks, another whacko show from years ago that I loved.

At the same time, I also love Chet Baker's Sunny Side Of The Street, so you can't go by me.

  3. These films aren't some celluloid memory closets, they're vital, living works of art that should challenge us no matter how old they are. The promos make viewers reassess what it is they're watching and when you catch a bit of a movie you know, you're forced to change the context and your perception of that context.

Kudos, Jason Els, on this observation. That's EXACTLY the point those of us who are more paranoid about TCM turning into AMC are trying to get across. The films from the past are ART and not money-producing media that some corporate suit should be trifling with. They are HISTORY and as such should be given landmark status.

bobncase, go to the Raygun website (I have had luck there) and replay to your heart's content. tcmprogammr guy said it was a rights issue, but yes, they would get a gazillion 'eyeballs' if they put those excellent videos on this website. I can't get enough of Muse's Time Is Running Out.

I'll be hard pressed to complain about TCM in the future after this executive decision. I'd be interested to know if a suit hired Raygun or whether it was some cool kid from the mail room.

tcmprogrammr, inquiring cynical minds want to know! :)

  4. Good idea, Sandy! Fortunately, my limit is 1. I think $12. is an outrageous price for a drink, but hey, the public is paying it, so what the heck.

There is a new restaurant in the town where I grew up, New Rochelle, that is featuring $58. steaks for one, and $88. steaks for two. I kid you not, AND they are a la carte!! Imagine?

My preferred drink is a Manhattan with Jack Daniels, pass the vermouth bottle over the glass. Or the aforementioned martini.

As to nightmares, I have the market cornered on them. I've had them ever since a kid (my brother does too, I think they're genetic). Mine can involve sitting bolt upright, eyes open, talking to poor mr. dolores, and then lying back down, remembering nothing in the morning. Or, getting up, going into another room, doing who knows what, and then returning to bed, again remembering nothing in the morning.

Sandy are you a Type A personality? I am, and think that is somehow tied into having nightmares. Ah well, no biggie.

As to baking, I love it (when I am not tired from working). Cheesecake and pies are my specialty. I can easily eat my weight in dessert, it's the most important of my three food groups. :)

  5. LOL, ok jdb1, are you calling me a drunk? :)

JK. I 'think' well drinks are those which do not use top of the shelf liquors. IOW, IF you ask for a specific vodka, e.g. Belvedere, then that is not at the happy hour price. If you are happy with the 'house' vodka, then that is a 'well' drink and that is included in the happy hour price.

  6. SusannO, glad you're back with us chatterboxes!

Don't you all say 'swet tea' for iced tea? I remember asking for iced tea in Greenville one time, and boy was it sweet!!! Then again, I also found Krispy Kreme way back when (in Winston Salem was it?), so I am not consistent when it comes to sweet.

Hah, I like your hiding place!

How funny, the 'front' of the pie is my favorite part....so no, I don't share pie either. :) Yup, I make a New York cheesecake that must weigh a ton, but every bite is worth it.

Your dad sounds cool. Nothing weird at all about your traditions, they sound charming.

  7. inglis, depends on personal preference imo.......my recipe is fresh mint, crushed in a glass with sugar and a little water, until it gives up all it's mint 'essence'.

Then, discard the mint, and add bourbon to taste and ice. Sit down, because one will knock you on your keester.

If you like Mojitos, follow the above, only use rum in place of bourbon.

    :)

  8. Sandy, SusannO, try Belvedere now and again (supposedly as good if not better than Grey Goose), pass the vermouth bottle over the extra large glass, never mind those teeny tiny ones, make the extra olives big ones, and expect me to blather on, even more than I do now. Perhaps even dance a Twist if Chubby Checker comes on the radio. :)

Make my filet rare, hold the potato thank you Atkins, and substitute with a piece of cheescake (screw you Atkins), New York style and no I don't share, don't even think about it.

Coffee and vanilla are my favorite ice creams, and Haagen Daaz, fake as it is, rules.

I'm a Pisces and after I found out that dogs are slobbering sycophants, I can't get enough of them.

I hate vegetables of any kind, and tofu and anything else healthy. Healthy people drop dead at an early age too.

I have always had nightmares, and still have night terrors. Scares the beejeezus out of mr. dolores. I love the X-files and all sorts of other genre of everything. I'm an eclectic maniac, heavy on the 'maniac'.

I love Robert Fuller and Warren William and come on, let's take this message board back from the Dark Side.

P.S. Oh, and I'd like to be a bartender after I retire from Corporate America, but they probably don't hire wimmen with buzzed grey hair, now do they?

  9. mrsl, as I've already said, I'm puzzled by this one.

I too believe RR is not TMN and I am sorry to see RR leave. I haven't seen Rusty lately, either. Shame.

I think the true evil person in all this is Snarfie, who has deleted his offensive posts along the way. If you remember, he engaged GarboManiac who left, to the loss of this board.

Darins I believe is Snarfie in another guise or a copycat moron.

At any rate, here's to free wheeling message boards and members who don't leave.

  10. jdb1, you are correct. I've walked the worst streets in Manhattan, and no, you don't make eye contact with a potential mugger on the street or on the subway. NO, Manhattan is NOT all about mugging, but it's a wonderfully scary city, and you soon learn to pick out the nutjobs from the so-called normal people, emphasis on 'normal'.

Funny story, jdb1, and I bet I am repeating myself. Then again, there have been sooooooo many posts on these boards the newbies might like it.

I was wallking the streets one day and saw something I didn't particularly like, and so burst out in a comment. Well, not ONE person turned to look at me. Why? I put it down to the newest and best technology, Bluetooth! A person can have a Bluetooth in their ear these days and be talking to themselves with nary a sideways glance from passersby.

So, jdb1, I think there will be a new definition of 'crazy' on the streets of New Yawk!

As to ignoring trolls and ugly people on message boards, you make a good point. However, I take exception to the good innocent people who engage them and are usually victim to their continuing vile. Therefore, I will continue to blast them to the best of my ability. This latest incident has me flummoxed, however, as I thought good people were evil and evil people were good!

    :(

  11. Bill, not to worry, Snarfie did the same thing. Just pity the ugly people who are capable of acting like that on a message board peopled by good folks.

Perhaps it's because Pluto was denied it's rightful place as a planet, but these boards have been stark staring mad lately.

However, believe me when I say this folks, this is as GOOD as it gets. If you hate censorship as much as I do, you will have to take my word for it.

The TCM boards are the best I have ever seen.

  12. Yes, filmlover, I turned on the radio at the hour of the murder, and was able only to bear the moment of silence at around 9:00am. I refused to turn on the television to see what insult the talking heads were giving to those murdered. I am a little more than 30 minutes from the site, and still have trouble driving into Manhattan.

Unfortunately, we will not in my lifetime wipe out terrorism.

I wish peace to all those who lost loved ones on that day and in the ensuing war on 'terrorism'.

  13. I wish, beg, plead, TCM to put these promos on the web for download because seeing them disappear when their run is over is just a sin.

tcmprogrammer, I agree. There can't be any objection on TCM's part, we the viewing audience are begging for a commercial. How odd is that???

Perhaps a note to info@raygun.com will yield the answer.

This promo is as good or better than many an MTV video I've seen, and I was there from the beginning.

they're all there on the Raygun site but you have to click on the This Month on TCM link. I think it is five or six links down from the top.

    Thanks, oldfilmbuff, got it!

Ah, so my 'shipping is directed at Raygun. And to whomever hired them.

Jason Els, agreed. Raygun takes our beloved films and updates them in an irreverent way with (so far that I've watched) good covers of songs I already like. Very, very, very clever. Very.

Would Raygun win an Obie for these promos? Do they qualify as commercials?

    dolores

  14. Did Raygun produce the current video? I can see a similarity with the flickering, migraine inducing images. Still, I like it.

Quiller, I don't know what anything has to do with anything on TCM anymore. Maybe 'time is running out' before TCM has commercials like AMC? Joke, it's a joke. I think it's a mood piece, like something that would belong on IFC. Still, I like it.

I still don't see 'Divorce Remorse' or 'Make It Home' anywhere, even on the Raygun site.

tcmprogrammer, aren't past videos stored somewhere? LOL, I'm actively pursuing a commercial, doesn't TCM want me to find it????

  15. I still haven't watched Gilda but I didn't realize Rita Hayworth was Hispanic. There was just yesterday a PBS special which talked of this and how her dark brown hair was lightened and then tinged red and voila...Rita Hayworth! No more Margarita Carmen Cansino. Typical studio system, I imagine.

    Interesting.

Also, they noted that Desi Arnaz preferred his name to be pronounced Ar-nas, not Ar-neh-z. I never knew this.
