More Treasures from American Film Archives

Fascinating is a good word. And amazingly commendable of TCM to show these gems. Where else would an average viewer get to see these historical documentations of the magic that was early film? Never mind that the cynic in me said, while watching people on a 1906 streetcorner attempt to keep their hats on while a wind blew mightily, why didn't they just give up wearing hats??? Thank you tcmprogrammer. I don't know who or how someone gets this stuff on the air, considering you also run 'Tootsie', but I commend you. -
Yes on the early Joan Crawford. I forgot Loretta Young, soooo gorgeous in 'The Bishop's Wife'.

Oh yes, ljenson, once and twice and thrice and mas on Sunday and even more if you open more than one Window. Oh yes, the logging in code written for this site was done in Ding Dong School by kids with crayons. A wonderful site? You betcha. Programming 101? You betcha again. Internecine? Holy crap, that's a cool one, gotta work that one into my conversation more. Internecine? You betcha, ain't it great? No censorship, no banning, no warning by percentages, no nuthin' in the way of pompous **** moderating. We don't need no stinkin' moderators. Wonderful board, ain't it? Welcome, welcome, welcome, realfuster. When are we all here? Who knows. I'm here now, I think. When I'm not here, I don't think I'm here. But ain't it fun? Film folks are fun. You want something to complain about? Go to A&E, go to Television Without Pity, go to aboutfilm.com. Three of the most horrid, obnoxious boards on the planet. Bet you'll come back here and don't worry, be happy. -
Jean Arthur, Gene Tierney (in 'Blithe Spirit'), Carole Lombard (sigh, she was sooooo gorgeous), Lizabeth Scott (aw, I just love that voice), and Jean Harlow. In the 'I don't get it' category, I'd have to put Veronica Lake. Neither pretty nor talented, imo. How about less than beautiful women? Edna May Oliver, Ethel Barrymore.

I am finding it hard to breathe, since so much ecstasy is so close but so far. I am in Westchester, a thirty.minute.drive from Manhattan, on a good day. But I can't go. I can't take off from work. I am this.close.to.retirement and I can't.take.off. jf51381, you just detailed my fantasy, about being locked in a room with every b/w film until I had seen them all. So, such is life. I can't see ALL the films at the Film Forum, therefore I won't see any of them. But thanks to your post, I called the Film Forum, and joined as a member. And they are NOT going to have that breathtaking array of films all in a row again, but they will send members an email with dates for when the individual films will be shown. Because I will.be.living.there when I retire. So, happy, happy, joy, joy, jf51381, I am in heaven. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Was that a movie where one of the kids has stigmata? I remember seeing a movie like that in Catholic grammar school, and it scarred me for life. Well, not really, but that was one heck of a nightmare-inducing movie to be showing little kids!

Thank you silentfan and kimbo, I'll have to put those on my 'must read' list.

slcsjjb, if there was ever a place to be out of place, this is the place! The only ones out of place in this place are the small minded, pompously cruel trolls such as 'greg'. Why such cretins come to boards like this just to bash other people is a mystery only known to those with enough of a lack of cerebral grey matter to be able to figure it out. Why they don't go to other boards where their minimally interesting verbal patter would be appreciated is, again, a mystery solvable only by those with a cranial compartment occupied with more space than substance. In other words (I include the 'other words' simply because the trolls here cannot comprehend well constructed, detailed English sentences) slcsjjb, welcome to the board and "Illegitimus non carborundum"!

If You COuld Bring Back Any One Person...
deeanddaisy666 replied to Jamie's topic in General Discussions
realfuster........ah, yes, the 'look' of Charles Middleton. Never knew his name. He reminds me of Tully Marshall, one of the 'gang' in 'Ball of Fire' who was sooo much more interesting looking (to me) than Gary Cooper. harlowkeatongirl...lol, so true! I sure got the train of this topic onto a lascivious track, didn't I??? -
If You COuld Bring Back Any One Person...

Cool question! Cary Grant, Cary Grant, Cary Grant! And I wouldn't want to talk to him! -
Good post, coffeedan. I stand well corrected, and immediately transfer my hate to Joseph Breen. So it was Breen who was probably the closet pervert, eh? As for silents, of course you make a very good point. I enjoyed both silents and subtitled films many, many years ago. I find, due to life 'stuff', that I currently do not have the patience to participate in either. Maybe...some day.
-
Really, balletstar86? Whereas I, an avowed movie lover and one who had a crush on Bela Lugosi waaaay back when, cannot hear Swan Lake without thinking of 'Dracula' and Bela.
-
Yes, 'A Man and a Woman' is as lovely as you remember it. It was on WNYE, an educational channel in NY, some time ago.

Leo, I didn't complain about the programming schedule TCM has chosen, please don't use my post on the I/T problems of this site to twist my words. Their programming suits me fine. In fact, I just last night saw a film I had never seen, Fredric March's 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'. Wonderful film. Loved the skin shot of Ms. Hopkins, NOT for the skin BUT for the freedom that the movies had in 1932 not to put Ms. Hopkins in a flannel nightgown. Boy do I hate Mr. Hays. Fredric March is a wonderful actor, just wonderful. So much better than Tracy in this role. However...and Leo I'm not agreeing with you on the inefficacy of any movie made before 1910, make no mistake...I just could NOT watch John Barrymore whom I love in the Silent version. It is a 'screen to brain thing' for some people, I have decided, I just can not watch silents. Again, that's me, and I applaud TCM for showing all the different versions of the Jekyll...pronounced Jee-kul, it seems!...and Hyde story. THANK you, TCM.

I too...thank you, stupid Cablevision...missed the documentary on pre-code films. I adore talking pre-code films, oh the language, oh the flesh! ltfripp, a hypocrite named Hays convinced the PTB to enact a code in 1932 or thereabouts (without checking on Google) to censor all of Hollywood forever and ever, until they deemed him for the nutjob (and for my money I bet he was a closet pervert) he was and ignored him. By then, it was too late, and all the real actors and actresses were dead. Speaking of documentaries, I would be remiss if I didn't ask for the documentary to be included on the life of David Reimer, a tortured soul who recently committed suicide and whose story I am sure I couldn't rewatch without again bawling my eyes out. What say you, TCM? The documentaries mentioned couldn't cost too many bucks, could they?

Okay, I can be as 'understanding' and 'accommodating' as the next person to poor little TCM, but again, come on. I don't retract telling them they should be 'ashamed', sorry. I have worked for a corporation for 28+ years, and I'm aware of every little spin that their PR department can put out, about how the little grunts have to be laid off due to there not being enough money in the budget, while the fat cats at the top are getting perks that would make your eyes roll around in their sockets. So no, I don't buy this 'woe is TCM' stuff. Money loss or not, the website brings people to TCM. Time Warner has more money than they know what to do with. I understand that this website is an afterthought to their revenue projects. However, INSTEAD of redoing the graphics on TCM, which DIDN'T need redoing (if it ain't broke, don't fix it?) they COULD have apportioned a tiny sum to update this site. As I said, I know a little about the I/T industry. I know they could have fed an entire village in India with a quarter of the salary paid to a programmer in the U.S., and a programmer in India could have knocked off the changes needed to make this site work better in a week. I mean no disrespect to TCM, nor to the patrons of this site. Cablevision took TEN long years to add TCM to their lineup, bless their stupid little hearts, so I'm not going to bite the hand that's feeding me. I love TCM, even with all its color films, it is STILL the one and only when it comes to 'venetian blind' black and white movies. ltfripp, I don't expect to 'influence' anybody. TCM is not about to listen to me, I just wanted to vent on what was obviously a very glitch filled day in I/T land. Perhaps it was the weather. And as to the notion that the glitches keep out those who are not VERY passionate about TCM and this board, well that's a very good point. There really IS nothing not to love about TCM!

kimbo, on the reliability of this site, I don't agree. With the money that Time Warner has to throw into the movies of today that will go straight to video due to their craptastic nature, I think they can afford to upgrade this site. There are far more modest sites at which I post where my id is recognized, I don't have to log in anew every time I open a new window, the search facility works consistently, and the edit facility works on posts. Really, there is NO excuse for the poor performance of the I/T on this site, none. Hell, programmers are a dime a dozen now, thanks to outsourcing, so they can commission an upgrade and feed an entire town for a week on what it used to cost to hire a U.S. programmer. On the subject of silents, more power to TCM and their programming staff. I haven't checked in to the ratio of color films to black and whites, so I can't tell if they're AMC-izing their schedule or not, but the number of tapeworthy films in November and December looks fine to me. And if they're keeping me happy with the obscure 'venetian blind' black and whites, and someone else with the color films, and still another audience member with the silents, well then they're doing their job. No matter WHAT the naysayers compose, TCM is still the ONLY station of its kind in basic cable. For that matter, I am not sure if there is a station like it in pay or satellite programming. Is there? Well, I've gotta go make sure I have written this post correctly. Because I don't know about you, but I can't get the edit capability to work.
-
Thank you, sage, real and moira. I appreciate your input. So the films sound tapeworthy. Cool.

update this site, it stinks. You know it, and I know it. I just tried to use the search facility, and NOT only does it not work, but it shut down completely on me. Okay, so I have to open a NEW window, AND log in again, just to ask a freaking question. Get with it, TCM, you should be ASHAMED of yourself. And don't ask me to use Feedback, you can stuff your Feedback. At any rate, my question. Can anyone here tell me what the block of movies on 11/14, from 10:00pm to 1:30am are? Are they silents or music videos or what, exactly? Not being able to bring up the November schedule from the main screen OR be able to search leave one little recourse other than to ask intelligent people if they recognize any of these titles. But really, TCM, use your GAZILLIONS of dollars and update this freaking site. How about it?

"Why have a beef with the one cable channel which serves those who enjoy the whole history of film, and not just those of the last forty years? I think that one must consider the overall vision of the cable channel. Don't go to an antique shop, and then complain they sell no Oakley sunglasses." Quite correct. I find it amusing that there are still those who come to this website to complain over and over about the quality of programming on TCM. It does not seem to me, who has only had the channel since January, that TCM has ever been a specialized station. They are obviously trying to appeal to more than one consumer. And they have NOT, unlike A&E, taken anything away just yet. I for one wish there were a channel which ONLY showed the black and white movies from 1930-1950, but there would, I imagine, be a receptive audience of approximately 25 people, if that. TCM cannot be everything to everybody, and I think they are still doing a damned fine job of mixing their scheduling. As the corporation for which I work told those from whom they had taken their promised retiree medical: 'get over it'. Now, in my book, a lifetime medical program is of more import than which movies one likes. Those who don't like TCM should go read a book, or watch Fear Factor, or get a Satellite hookup. Why continually complain here with an outrageous claim that Buster Keaton is being 'rammed' down your throat? Turn off your set, for pete's sake, and go do something else for the time being.

Wasn't Professor Irwin Corey a comedian who dealt in double talk? And for foreign language doubletalk, or no-talk, you can't beat Sid Caesar!

slcsjjb, Danny Kaye was YOUR COUSIN??????????? YOUR COUSIN? *sigh* I loved Danny Kaye, I loved his timing, his enunciation, his face, his body movements, his everything! I loved the fact that his wife wrote those wonderful songs...The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!...I loved his television show, AND I thought he was sexy. He was YOUR COUSIN!???!!! Please, can you share what he was like? Was he as nice a human being as he seemed? OH, and please, please tell me you remember a Victoria Meyerink on his show! Her name is stuck in my head for perpetuity, I can't get it out. Whatever happened to Victoria? LOL, have I said that I love Danny Kaye? I also love Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, George Carlin, Mort Sahl, John Byner, Jonathan Winters, Lucille Ball, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Parkyakarkus, Albert Brooks (his son), Denis Leary, Lewis Black, Totie Fields, Elaine Stritch, Robert Benchley, Abbott and Costello, John Belushi, Larry David, and on and on and on. I so much appreciate the entertainment genre that is comedy. It is soooo difficult to make people laugh, as opposed to making them cry. There are very few comedians whom I don't like, but I don't like the current ones who have no cleverness whatsoever in their routines, and rely strictly on filth or insults. YOUR COUSIN?????

Any "Lost" Films You'd Like TCM To Show?
deeanddaisy666 replied to ibadhatharry's topic in General Discussions
fredrandyp, did you hear Mantan Moreland's exchange with Ben Carter in 'The Scarlet Clue'? It was priceless: Moreland: "Why if it ain?t?uhhh?." Carter: "Ben Carter?s the name." Moreland: "Benjamin Carter, I haven?t seen you since?" Carter: "Longer than that!" Moreland: "Last time I saw you, you lived over?" Carter: "Oh I moved from there." Moreland: "Yeah?" Carter: "Sure, I moved over to?" Moreland: "How can you live in that neighborhood?" Personally, I would like to see 'Beyond Tomorrow' which I know was on AMC. -

George Sanders and Robert Osbourne question

An answer straight from across the pond..... George Sanders would have pronounced his name with a long 'a', as in 'art'.
