  1. If it helps no,no it is as the other poster stated a movie with Steve Martin and a fine movie. If it helps it has Jason Robards in it and he does a fine grumpy but big-hearted guy role in this one. It also has (msp) sorry Dian Weiz who won the Academy Award for Hannah and her sisters and a just starting out Keenue Reeves, Martha Plimpton and one of the Culkin brothers or Pheonix brothers(not the more famously known ones). Give it a try I think you will like it or I hope you will. I should tell you there is some funny but potentially offensive scenes and I wonder if TCM will show it(them). It also has the actress who plays the mother in Joan of Arcardia in it she plays Steve Martin's wife. Let us know how you liked it if you watch-take care.....gwtwbooklover
  2. I have lots of views on this like back in the 50s-60s and before I bet it was unusual for ladies to go out casually not to do up the hair and don the gloves etc. Atleast this is what it seems things were like. I mean these movies showed fashion as part what was and part what they want it to be. Think of all the movies or TV shows showing people doing housework in heels....heels that is not real and did people really wear bandanas over their heads to do housework? Another question did they really dress to the nines to do housework?-of course not. You are seeing someones ideals of 50-60 or 40s fashion. I applaud the lifting of certain silly rules like pants for women it just to me goes along with the lifting of the burden of society of being a divorced woman which existed in the 50s and 60s. Sad to think that the revolution of wearing pants probably came before a woman could apply for and receive bank loans without a husband on the offer. I know I have come left of center of the original post and I am sorry. It just irks me and I feel it should you to that not to long ago as a woman they wouldn't let you in to certain establishments simply because you had on slacks. I do agree that today that midriff look is horrible and the low hip jeans has got to go. I have to admit I am a casual stress the casual dresser I mean my son spends more time prinning before the mirror than I do but I hope I'm not offensive. Then just as a thought I thought of the 70s and I have a question please was there a big, big deal when it was apparent that ladies weren't wearing a bra like on Rhoda? Guys I am 34 and therefore don't remember or even better wouldn't know. Please forgive the TV question.
  3. Minnelli filmed Cabin in the Sky with such beauty. He showed the vitality of Lena Horne, the beauty, the sexiness of her screen presence. She is so beautiful. Minnelli could have taken the road of others who chose not to make (at the time) a sophisticated black musical or to show blacks in beauty. I wonder how Cabin in the Sky was accepted at that time by African-Americans?
  4. Guys off the subject a bit what does **** stand for? Who did Burton lose to? Thanks
  5. Don't tell me they colorized Cabin in the Sky-can hardly believe it. That must have had Minnelli spinning in his grave. Minnelli pictures were stunning he took great pains to capture a look with what he had to work with I mean B&W film and film in color I can hardly believe that they colorized it. Other than that (maybe they can leave off the colorized version) I support your idea. The King Kong and Fay Wray idea sounds good to just so sorry we had to lose Fay.
  6. edge I'm so jealous but I am glad you had a great time is there a mailing list to join or receive mailings from the academies you mentioned?
  7. Welcome loveoldmovies04 I love Gone With the Wind also as you can tell. Have you read the book? Welcome again.....gwtwbooklover
  8. Man,jposkitt1983 I hope you get a response to your questions the end confused me and I've only seen it once. I know you didn't want to talk about the film but was Burton nominated for an Oscar? Also, I have stated in another thread I feel Burton did a bang up job in this flick so much better than Taylor he is the glue that holds(as much as one can hold this play/movie) together.
  9. Guys I would be shocked..if TCM showed The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Keithfromkc I saw Horror at a midnight show myself-how about that? It was alot of fun. What constitutes a cult film? Good Question-how about those people who start flocking to a movie to emulate what the screen showed like the recent Pride and Prejudice with Emma Thompson and then people started groups inspired by this movie. Also I read in the book Still Me by Christopher Reeve that the movie he and Jane Seymour made(don't know if it was for the TV screen or the silver screen) Chris writes of people vacationing at the lake prominent in the movie taking their honeymoon there and starting little groups with that movie in common. He was amazed that it touched so many people.
  10. A wild incorrect guess Random Harvest-atleast I know there is memory loss.
  11. good point Clark I guess the bootleggers wouldn't care if the logo is there or not-would they? I wonder if logohater has complained to the TCM team in the Feedback section. If TCM says they will only show said logo for a brief time then they should. Someone once posted that maybe someone was asleep at the controls or on a bathroom break and forgot to remove the logo. I honestly don't pay much heed to the logo. It disappears for me but then I'm just me. I can understand how it could bother someone like scratching a chalkboard does to certain people.
  12. p2ndary I remember the stick over Ted Turner wanting to colorize movies. I remember seeing a news clip of Jimmy Stewart telling "Mr. Turner to keep his crayolas from my movies" The process at that time sucked. It looked cheesy and the color seems washed out. They may have advanced in trasnsferring b&w film to color by now due to the advances of film but don't know if they will try. Again, due to the backlash. I was not impressed by the first colorized batch of films. I think they colorized the movie made with Pat O'Brien(msp-sorry) and James Cagney don't know the name. Cagney plays a bragger in the army who's actually a coward and O'Brien is the understanding priest. The green uniforms were a washout an odd light shade of green almost like watercolors. Hope you find what you are looking for-good luck.
  13. Talk about your pet peeves. Bless your heart. Logohater be one with the logo or look at it this way maybe just maybe the logo ain't a logo really it is talking to you it says (following the TCM in TCM) Totally Comic Man...Terrific Can-do Man....Take the Cat out Man(got a cat?) it could be speaking to you....Take Care Man....Terrific Caring Male....Tomatoes Mustard Canned-biscuits(maybe you need to go shopping).....Totally Masculine Champ....Tuck the Mattress Covers....bless your heart. this silly Putty has to go to bed
  14. myidolspencer-I saw the Hard Gut short and couldn't believe my eyes a young, young Spencer Tracy. If Robert Osbourne hadn't told me it was him I wouldn't have known it was him. Have you seen the short with James Stewart? The one where he is working at a newspaper? I remember I saw Hard Guy when TCM was showing early works of the stars some years ago.
  15. you are right classicfan1119- Posey killed a man with one punch, Bronson's character shot someone in the back and Maggot killed a woman- off camera of course but being interviewed by the major they thought it was justified.......congrats ML

  19. clue#6-Either they were in or either they were out.If they were out then that alternative wasn't a good prospect hard times were ahead. But if they were in that was just slightly better hard times were here, there, everywhere with a way out of hard times if they lived through it.
  20. That was clue number 4 have to go child anxiously waiting use of computer(he is tapping his feet) Now his is tapping the other one
  21. for these acts against others- shooting someone in the back and killing a woman the offenders feel there is a justifiable reason
