an independent free-thinking renegade soldier which has a fellow soldier asking him if they were in the same army-weren't they? -
Was that her real name Hedy Lamaar or was it Hedley like in the thread about no movies on her birthday or was Mel Brooks doing a play on words? If it is not her real name how did they go about picking this one and what is her real name? I have always wondered the same about Rock Hudson- I would imagine he chafed at this name I could just hear it you know an agent saying "I know it will work-keep saying it Rock Hudson" What was his real name? Did John Wayne ever go by Marion in his early, early career? Or was it changed by 1929-wonder if he made it up if not who did? Was Clark Gable's name really that one or did he change it? Just what are the original names of certain stars and how did they find the names they gave themselves? Thanks for any info

loliteblue that's not it. Clue #2-all for one and one for all.... reluntantly...but survival depends on it -
I disagree cj I mean if one wants to get so technical or picky and if this was true then why did they show 2 songs from Jailhouse Rock as videos? They showed the jail scene of the Jailhouse Rock song and the singing okay lip sincing of Baby You're so Square. I saw these in the infancy of music videos. However, I think the Singing in the Rain is early music video or even the whole Gotta Dance Number. There are numerous others but I've got to go because someone is breathing down my neck to use the computer. Also, I think the real first music video was a Martha and the Vandellas song either Dancing in the Streets or Love is like a Heatwave produced by Murray the K which shows the Ladies going thru a car factory in a car being built as they sinc the song.

clue#1- one punch and a man is dead -
Difference of old movies and new
gwtwbooklover replied to lococardinal's topic in General Discussions
Doing tons of laundry and between loads here I go. The restrictions old Hollywood faced by censors-this is gone. However it has let in alot of garbage but I have heard of the censors wanting to change a film to punish a wrong doer though the Director didn't want to film this but without the change no release of film. Vincette Minnelli talks about this with Madame Bovary in his book I remember it Well and it is mentioned throughout early Hollywood History. Also the length of movie making or the adding footage on DVDs is a grat improvement. I was outraged when I read of the butcher job done on A Star is Born of course this was reportedly done by one of the Warner Brothers but I don't think he could do this today. Or atleast something would be preserved. Cukor said of Star (of its length-the human mind and the human a## could not sit thru such a long movie) wrong as Titanic showed and other long movies. I think one has today a chance to say this is mine all of it and not woorry about the film being recycled for its nitrate. Which leads to advancement of film to preserve it and to restore it which couldn't have happened without modern techniques and "modern moviemaking". So when they preserve(heaven forbid-Howard the Duck) they will turn their attention to GWTW or My Fair Lady as they have. I know I am jumping to so many subjects sorry but guys have you forgotten those animated gems? Like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? or The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast or The first Lion King it would make Walt proud to see these movies. Granted it will be unlikely to be another 1939 when all those movies in all one year came out that are still marveled at today like Stagecoach,GWTW or The Wizard of OZ just to name a few but I hope great movies are still on the way. -
Difference of old movies and new

Oh, I need to be in bed but here I am. Are you guys forgetting that there are always rooten apples in the bunch? This is true in the olden days of hollywood and today-be honest. Let's don't forget Dances with Wolves or The 6th Sense. Surely there has been some goodies Jaws for instance that was moviemaking though it ushered in some unwanted residuals it was moviemaking on the grand scale. It had a plot, good effects and actors who put there body and soul to those roles. I agrree that sequels suck except the Star Wars ones and the 2nd Rocky. They should have stopped the Rockys after that. I think the studios falling helped the movies-they were so rigid. The move to independence in the late 60s was refreshing, the moves to actotrs being directors was a big step. I think it is wrong to dismiss the currents as trash and forget about the clunkers old Hollywood made over and over again except the gems were more numerous to be sure. Clint Eastwood is still directing. Which leads to his recent The Unforgiven what a movie-loved it. The Cedar House Rules was a fantastic movie.Although I didn't see it I heard Seabuscuit was a good remake-how about that. Philidelphia there's a movie and old Hollywood wouldn't have touched it with a 10 foot camera. This subject reminds me of a friend of mine who once told me "I don't watch old movies if it is in black and white I don't even bother" Don't shut new Hollywood out there's a great movie I know out there all the ideas aren't gone just hang in there all the old movies weren't great. Just thought of Shindler's List by that Jaws director Syeven Speilberg-what a movie indeed. -
My parents talked alot about Elizabeth Taylor and they both agrred that if he was still alive she'ld still be married to Mike Todd. I was so young 10,11,12,13- Strange how early memories are kept- I remember Mom buying the tabloids esp. if Liz was on the cover.

I like Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith who I have heard people are comparing to Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

J I hope you are okay maybe you live in Florida and didn't get to post your clues. I know how hard it is to come up with clues and post those babies. I was posting clues in my jammies before work. However, I would like to propose a new rule to the other posters perhaps if a player does not pick up the game after 24 or 48 hours one can chose to pick up the game or the previous person can log clues again. -
Loved To Kill a MOckingbird a fav.

Roles originally meant for another

I forgot about that Temple being considered for Oz before Judy talk about dodging a bullet. What really chaps me is though Dorothy is the main character the person playing her got paid less than all the others playing scarecrow, tin man and cowardly lion. Even worse though was how much the difference of pay was between Garland and Rooney in the movies they made together he got paid so much more than her talk about unfair. -
Yes carollombard01 that is the part of the book I was referring but there is so much more that I didn't get words I don't know or know they existed. Then there's parts of the book that I just love and want to use in everyday language so far I haven't had the chance to use you can't "hunt with the hounds and run with the hares" but I have it handy. Thanks for the info carolelombard and everyone else. I wrote down the website you gave me morriafinne (msp-sorry) and will check into it. Thanks again everyone

It is about GWTW-there is a lot of words that I don't understand in this book are there websites that exist thyat one can go to to find the meaning of the words or the context or the book? Like when Scarlett opens her lumber businness Rhett gives her a name to put on the sign and Ashley has to tell her what it means and of course it doesn't go on the sign and there are so many more. If you even vaguely know of a website or a GWTW one that talks about the book in detail I would greatly appreciate it.

carolelombard01 where did you see the story in the sequel to GWTW? I looked and couldn't find it. You know Rhett and Scarlett were not together much in Mitchell's book either when they marry it is a few hundred pages from the end. However Mitchell would weave Rhett back into Scarlett's life throughout the book and this was sorely missing in the sequel. I wish someone would tackle the sequel again. The only part of the sequel I like is Scarlett growing up if Rhett said to her "Scarlett could it be you've grown a woman's heart, a real woman's heart" she would have and when Rhett is in Ireland and he and Scarlett run into each other and he looks at her "as if he was seeing her for the first time" this is a good passage and then he tells her I hear I'm dead. She told everyone her husband had died in Ireland. The humor is missing also the original book is so funny and richly described. I think Ripley the sequel author took the easy way out on this book and if she couldn't do it justice why try and the publishers made a mistake in printing it. I know that Mitchell's brother was pressed to name an author to pen the sequel before the copywright ran out ? So can there honestly be another sequel-if one was so inclined? Can they get on it like a duck on a junebug- southern expression for ASAP.

carolelombard01 you made me think of a favorite line from the Wizard of Oz when the spook discusion comes up and the cowardly lion is chanting "I'm not afraid of spooks, I'm not afraid of spooks" then something happens to-the tin man he's picked up or was it scarecrow? Anyway the cowardly lion then starts saying "I am afraid of spooks, I am afraid of spooks" which makes me burst out laughing everytime I see it.

Humphrey Bogart and his baby Lauren Bacall-there's a couple I wish they would have had more time together but what they had they enjoyed. It is very touching to read about in her book Lauren's book she is so truthful in the ups and downs of her being married to him and he to her but the love jumps from the page. The courtship was so straining to read about I can only imagine what is was like in real life. They went down such a long road to be together and it just makes you so happy for them as you read of it you can see the clouds part and the clear skies ahead for them before the end. I also like June Allyson and Dick Powell another May-December romance. June writes so lovingly about him. It was true love on both their parts I can just hear him call her Monkeyface and Juniepie. Allyson tells how tickled he was she was to have a baby since she and he thought it would never happen. Then the mishaps her telling a partyhost the reason they weren't at their party was that they had a cow in the pool(they were raising cows) and her mistelling the name of Powell's movie The Enena down Below instead of The Enemy Down Below. Then how slightly miffed she was when Powell said Debbie Reynolds was making June look old to him if he wasn't careful. I cried buckets when she talked of his death. Betty Grable and Harry James seemed very happy I saw them many a time on TV with Ball and Arnaz on the shows after I Love Lucy. I always thought how wonderful that looks aren't everything to some people. I also like Anne Bancroft to Mel Brooks and remember finding out they were married the serious actress to the funny man and being surprised.

In To Be or Not to Be they show the stage troop rehearsing and they are dressed as Nazis and the "hitler " guy walks in and of course you hear the Hail Hitlers and then Hitler guy says as he raises his hand "hail me" and it is not as funny probably written down as it is to see it on the screen. The kids and I rolled though because it was so silly and one can hear him saying it since they always parroted it hail Hitler. I guess it has to be thrown in with the hilarious Springtime for Hitler from The Producers.

The movie Places in the Heart has a realistic showing of a tornado and its aftermath esp. chilling is the showing of the lady in the car who wanted Will to get the car with her. Of course there is always Key Largo but which storm is worse the one outside or the one inside? Then there is The Wreck of the Mary Deare(msp I'm sure) I never got to see the end but I know Cary Grant is in it. Then there is a movie I can't recall the name to but it showed reactions of groups of people to the news that a hurricane is on the way and some get ready and some have a hurricane party. I'd like to say it is an older 70s movie.

I stand corrected- sorry for all the msp will ask my son if I can check spellings and still recall the page I am on. Should probably make a copy of spellings and at it to the stack of papers I am saving. Guys you should see our computer area had pledged to clean the house this Labor Day weekend and got pulled to the TCM website. The computer area is slowly slipping into the work station that Dennis Nedley had in Jurrassic Park.

Welcome carolelombard01 hope you enjoy the site as much as I do. My favorite Lombard movie is To Be or Not To Be with Jack Benny. I haven't seen to many Lombard movies but I applaud her effotrts to her country and her dying in the line of duty. It was truly a great loss.

In The Apartment I like the line Fran says while crying in CC's apartment "if you are going to see a married man you shouldn't wear mascara" and the "shut-up and deal" line by Fran and all the wises CC says cookiewise and etc. but my favorite is how CC tells Fran what he knows about her from her file and mentions she's had an appendectomy and she tells him to keep that info to himself so no one will get the wrong impression as to how he found out.
