  1. I agree with the Poster who wrote why Can't TCM air the deaths after the first of the year that's a good idea. Plus, there are some descriptions left off like Paul Newman an actor well he directed also more than one film..I thought that was an obvious oversight and Cyd Charisse would be nice to see Extraordinary dancer(though she is not my fav but she could hoof) or My father's favorite pair of legs seriously the dancer for Cyd should have been included. I've seen a couple of others but they don't come to mind right now.

    > Have you seen "Battleground"?

No but it is listed on Van's movies at the netflix website so I'll have to see if I selected it and if not I will. I think I saw it listed there...

  3. When I learned Van Johnson died I was upset. He is one of my favorites. He just seems so lovable, so cuddly, so sexy...I loved it when he was shirtless what a man in The Last Time I saw Paris and his voice I love to hear it and I also have to post I especially love his line to the airplane in 30 Seconds Over Tokyo "Come on baby give" he could say it to me and I would. I am hoping to catch A Guy Named Joe I cried at the end of that movie when I first saw it. I am going to look for 23 Paces to Baker Street on Netflix. I love Van Johnson when he is making love to his leading lady god he was good. Like The Last Time I saw Paris he romances both of those sisters and he and the gals steam up the screen without bad words or nudity. He clutches Donna Reed's arm and you know what he is thinking, feeling and when Elizabeth Taylor plants a kiss on him the scene just sizzles and did I mention the changing of his shirt in this movie HOT, HOT, HOT. I would like to see the movies van made that were straight dramatic roles, not romantic roles but dramatic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  4. I have only seen it once this morning and I can't believe all the passings that's what I said aloud so many stars passed...I found the tribute moving and especially haunting with the song that ends...let it be enough....I missed coming on the website when Van Johnson died. I LOVE Van Johnson that big hunk of man with his own Van Johnson voice which sounded like no other. RIP Van your fan gwtwbooklover and thank you for work and the memories. I went to Netflix and ordered some Van Johnson movies like 3 Guys named Mike, Miracle in the Rain, Divorce American Style, and The Purple rose of Cairo and a couple of more......Did TCM do a TCM remembers specifically for Van Johnson?

  5. I leaned much from this book and I have to tell you I was eating a tiny pecan pie while I was reading one night. You know the little pie with the aluminum tin when the pie was gone I wondered what in the world those men would have done with this little piece of aluminum. The movie is true in lots of spots to the book and they do change the names of the characters in the book like Bushnell was called Bartlett in the movie. Because of reading this book I searched on the internet for more info and it is rich with info if you look in the right places. One blaring problem with the movie to the book is no American escaped; the American prisoners were moved before the tunnel was finished;the British and the Americans were getting along to well. It must have been heartbreaking to leave all their work behind but they did. There was another tunnel started George but it wasn't finished the Germans moved all the men out on a march as the allied war was coming to the prison camps. My heart sank as the prisoners could hear the war and then the Germans would move them till finally they were liberated. I found a list of the 50 and it is heartbreaking how short liberation was but I bet it was tons better than being in the prison and such a relief to know that it worked the plan after so long in the construction- the tunnel worked. I ached for the men and you will to read this if you get the chance.

  6. I just finished this book and thought everyone needs to read this. I could not put it down. I read it in 3 days. It is Paul Brickhill's writings about the The Great Escape from Stalag Luft 3 that the 1963 movie The Great Escape is based. Paul writes from a bird's eye view he was there and knew the men digging and watching and forgering papers and uniforms. He also knew the men doing the escaping. He writes of things I can't even imagine men would pool themselves to do. He tells how it was done and how the Germans dealt with the escape and helps us to discover the ultimate outcome of the escape. What is so fascinating is the extent of cunning, of the brainpower of these men and the way they did not give up. I can only imagine the undertakening of men who decide to build tunnels, dig them out, disperse the sand, forge the documents, sew near enough civilian clothes or German uniforms, dummy rifles, holsters for imaginary pistols,a pipe out of powdered milk cans so the air can be pumped to the diggers and a pump to make the air. Amazing is all I can say. Let me give you some examples they mimeographed sheets as by way of a primative xerrox which Brickhall explains but I didn't follow but they made copies and copies of maps this way and letterheads. With the heel of a rubber boot the made stamps and seals see they carved the image in the boot heel and the inked it and the pressed it on the paper. They received ink from some of the guards who took kindly to some of the prisoners. What wasn't given to them they stole with mass precision. Some guards were stringing wire for a speaker and a fight breaks out and the guards watch and then 80 feet of wire is missing. A car pulls into the compound and the driver is left with the car and the prisoners take to admiring the car what harm can come from this? well the driver is conversing with a prisoner and on the otherside a prisoner is lifting out tools and anything else he can find. We meet Bushnell and the other key players. What strikes me is we learn of Bushnell's occupation of acting- one tries to occupy his time in the bag. If he hadn't escaped he would have been opening on the stage playing Professor Higgins in Pygmalion in a few days. But he tried his hand that frigid night of 3-24-44 and we learn and feel why one would do such a thing and why some people chose not to and we learn how 3 tunnels, 3 tunnels people are implemented without a bat of an eye to the enemy. 600 men knew something was being done they didn't know where, how deep, who was going, they watched the ferrets, sewed clothes they wouldn't wear, got rid of the sand, gave up their bedboards for framing the tunnel, concocted prison granola bars for the trip out all this without one single person letting the secret out.

  7. MissGoddes if you don't mind I would like to interject in your explanation of Scarlett/Ashley/Rhett. Ashley did lust for Scarlett but he also admired her very much and this cord of admiration was shared by Melanie, they Melanie and Ashley loved Scarlett for her strength and free spirit and this they both shared together openly to others and to each other. Ashley of course has that lust for Scarlett but who could blame her ( for loving Ashley) he LEAD her on squiring her around and he knew he had nothing in common with Scarlett and they were ill matched but he indulged in his fantasies as far as convention could let him. He never kissed her on these "dates" but he enjoyed taking her out and calling on her especially. He takes her little girl heart and swells it when he knew better but did it anyway because he can't help himself. Which leads to Rhett who fell for Scarlett the same reason Ashley does ( for her beauty) and sees the qualities in Scarlett that Ashley and Melanie both admire. It is sad that Rhett and Scarlett who don't want to lose themselves to the other which would give the other control and they feel the other mate would exploit those feelings. But it takes awhile for these 2 to fall in love it is such timing that he loves her and she's holding back and when she loves him well he doesn't reciprocate thus being at cross purposes. Yes, reading the book helps one to understand the relationship better. Many, many times Rhett is watching Scarlett to see if she does love him waiting for the love watching her as Scarlett thinks like a cat watching a mouse hole. He wants her to love him and he covers his true feelings and she therefore doesn't see it she evens questions it "he doesn't love me?" could he...darn these 2 ! The mask goes up on the both of them and when the put them down it's to late. I do have to also say that Rhett who had said to Scarlett over and over again his feelings for all things proper ( he wasn't keen on it) when he was calling on her he wasn't a marrying man, he was out for number 1, he asked her to be his mistress which is a very funny part of the book, he made fun of people, poked holes in commomnly held beliefs, the only woman he held in esteem was Melanie. So he proposes to Scarlett and is surprised that Scarlett took all his words of love being a crock to heart. He says as much oh to have my own words held against me. He asks Scarlett do you love me and she says didn't you once say that it was bad form for a man and wife to love each other and he says to her have you in all your reading ever read where the disinterested wife falls in love with her husband and she says you know I don't read but he doesn't pursue it lets it drop. He would have loved to shout his love for Scarlett from the roof tops. He LOVES Scarlett but she'd LORD it over him and vice a versa that is until she loves him and he has hit the end of his love. I love GWTW and I wish people would read it to truly understand the character of Scarlett.

  8. Nick it was HBO you were watching it when my sister and I were watching it. It was hokey but campy fun my sister and I watched it every time it came on HBO. It is amazing how 2 people are thinking of the same movie or the same question. Occasionally I think I need to order SuperFuzz on Netflix if it is available...show the kids....Superfuzz his weakness was the color red wasn't it? Plus now that I think about it wasn't Ernest Borgnine his partner? Or was it someone who looked a lot like Ernest?

  9. TikiSoo I was going to ask the VERY same question you asked I thought when Burt came to tell Mildred she could have her divorce that I was hearing the Now Voyager music! Thank you for asking and thanks to the poster for their response. I can watch Mildred Pierce over and over again and Now Voyager it never gets old.

  10. Goldie, girl if you haven't done it yet and if you have do it again for me give that honey bunny of yours a kiss and squeeze you know for your birthday. I for one would like to see Foul Play on TCM this is a movie with Goldie and Chevy Chase and Dudley Moore it sounds like Dudley is a hoot in it. Happy Belated Birthday Goldie!

  11. Mongo Hello! I have just read a book about Dudley Moore it is titled Dudley Moore The Melancholy Clown by Barbra Paskin. It was very interesting, illuminating and sad. It became especially horrific when I read about Dudley's 4th marriage to Nicole Rothschild and I was wondering about the little boy who would be 13 now that Dudley and Nicole had in 1995. Is he with his mother? and any info about him would be great. Plus, his son with Tuesday Weld- Patrick how is he doing? Many thanks in advance....gwtwbooklover

  12. ok...ok...see if you can relate I have been known to but other people's TV on channel 14(TCM) and try to guess the name of the movie..I love to watch movies but I haven't been TCMing lately since they show ones I'm not keen to see or since Dancing with the Stars is on again.....so I would say per week I watch between 5-10 hours.

  13. The trailor for Return to Peyton Place has a scene where someone is being engulfed in flames. It looks to be Ted trying to rescue his wife from his mother's burning home. Sylvia Stoddard talks about the book(Return to Peyton Place) having a huge fire but they didn't use it in the film BUT I saw flames, the scene in the trailor but not in the movie-any idea why it is not in the movie? Much thanks in advance to solve this mystery.

  14. I want to report that the DVD Return to Peyton Place has a few gems on it. There is commentary by a woman named Sylvia Stoddard who is an author and film historian and very, very informative. On this same disc are trailors for both Peyton place movies, A Letter to 3 wifes, and All about Eve where a man sits and briefly talks to Bette Davis about this movie plus another film that for the life for me I can't remember. Then there is movie tone footage that is very brief but fun to see. They also tell and show how they restored the film. And much to my delight the original Peyton Place has extras on its DVD which I'll be ordering shortly. According to Sylvia it has some footage of Grace M.(the author of Peyton place) doing interviews like Allison does in the sequel(a press junket if you will). Sylvia was very informative about the stars, the studio, the book, the author, what was happening in the world at the time. Also on the DVD of The Diary of Anne Frank, the one with Millie Perkins, has commentary by Millie and George Stevens Jr. the son of the director of this film. Their commentary was very informative also with the back stories that they would only know. The movie A New Kind of Love has no extras. If you know of any classic films with any extras please share.

  15. lzcutter when I read your response I thought to myself yes and i have it on my list at netflix Liza with a Z however I will have to check that for a fact.....don't know if you are a Liza fan but have you seen the show Liza live at Radio City Music Hall? I saw it on HBO years ago in the early to mid 80s and was so enchanted by it....this was before my forage into old movies and movie stars I was into Elvis who of course was long dead by then and old rock and roll and then my nostalgia for all things classic bloomed ....I still remember how awed we 4 kids were when Mom and Dad told us Liza was Judy Garland's daughter from Over the Rainbow then here I am years later discovering what a talent her father was and sharing it with you guys.
