path40a, DeHavilland arrived in Los Angeles recently to promote the DVD release of GWTW and she was interviewed by the Los Angeles Times. The lady looked fine in the picture accompanying the story. DeHavilland, with white hair, now looks like the grand old dame of the cinema. I doubt if she would have traveled all the way from France if she was in declining health.
I purchased my copy of GWTW on Tuesday, but haven't as yet viewed the DVD. I would think she appears on camera. DeHavilland is also participating in the upcoming documentary on Errol Flynn.

Two more titles I would love to see FOX release in 2005 star Tyrone Power -- THE RAZOR'S EDGE and NIGHTMARE ALLEY. Both are neglected classics.

Fox will release the long awaited and wonderful A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN on February 22. I am not sure whether this will be part of the Classic Studio Collection or not. This is the last of three titles announced that I really wanted. The others are PINKY and LETTER TO THREE WIVES. TREE really needed restoration so I am anxious to see what this print will look like.

RIDE VAQUERO! is an OK western. This one is worth seeing only for its cast of three stars Keel, Gardner and Taylor. CALLAWAY WENT THATAWAY is a mild spoof with Keel impersonating a TV cowboy. It co-stars favorite Dorothy McGuire who I feel is wasted. KISMET is a visually stunning filming of the B'way musical. Director Vincente Minnelli does his best, but this 1955 musical come off as slow moving and dull. Its a film Minnelli did not want to make. KISMET is worth seeing only for the the lovely music which is beautifully sung by stars Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Vic Damone and the wonderful Dolores Gray. MGM did not always do the best for Keel. Fortunately, in between the duds he made a few classics for the studio.

Apparently there is something wrong when posting messages. It printed double on two different forums. Sorry for the confusion, if any.

Paramount has announced a February release date for Vincente Minnelli's last film musical ON A CLEAR DAY. Although visually stunning in flashback this 1970 musical was a disappointment. The film suffered by studio tampering in its final edit and by miscasting leading man Yves Montand opposite Barbra Streisand One would love to see the unedited version, but knowing Paramount it will probably be a bare bones release. Still this is better than no release at all.

moviejoe79, in regards to your comments about millions of people buying the classic DVD's, how wrong you are. People like us who love the classics are in the minority. I read that ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND sold only 2500 units. That's meager compared to new releases such as SHREK or THE MATRIX. The old titles just don't sell as well that is why MGM is trying to market them differently so they will sell in bigger quantities. And even more fans of these classics have to continue to buy these titles otherwise sadly many of the more obscure titles will never see the light of day.

feaito, you hit the nail on the head about Keel. Watching and listening to him being interviewed by Robert Osborne at the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN showing some years ago, Keel appeared to be very down to earth. He told the audience that he tried to get Betty Hutton to appear but that she declined. His last personal appearance was probably at a collectors show in North Hollywood, CA earlier this year and Keel appeared to be in the best of health.

It was very sad just hearing about another beloved MGM star dying. I first heard Keel's glorious voice when he co-starred in MGM's remake of SHOWBOAT. Later I got to see some other favorites: SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS and CALAMITY JANE. I always thought Keel should have been reunited with Doris Day in JUMBO. Originally MGM wanted Laurence Olivier to star in KISS ME KATE, but Keel turned out to be perfect casting. Oddly enough Keel's death follows the recent passing away of KISS ME KATE co-star Ann Miller.
I was lucky to meet Keel twice in person, first when he signed my poster for SHOWBOAT and some years later at an anniversary screening in Los Angeles for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN which was hosted by Robert Osborne.

sagebrush522, I think Cary Grant created an image for himself and he stuck with it. He felt the public wanted to see him only in these roles. Exceptions are NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART and PENNY SERENADE. If you have not seen the latter you should make it a point to. He is very, very good in a non Cary Grant role and you can see he IS a very good actor. Some of his scenes are very moving and he works beautifully with his co-star Irene Dunne. It's soap opera, but its pretty wonderful.

BRINGING UP BABY has never been a favorite of mine, In my opinion this "screwball comedy" is way over the top and over the years the film, for some reason, has gotten more and more acclaim. A much better "screwball comedy" is MY MAN GODFREY with Carole Lombard and William Powell, which was relased one year before BABY.

sagebrush522, since you brought up the subject of gay... informed sources tell me Wagner is definitely bisexual (although he won't admit it), ditto the same for Robert Taylor, and I don't think these are made up stories. There are plenty of bisexual people around in Hollywood and outside of Hollywood. As for Stanwyck her sexually has always been a secret, there has only been speculation. I think with Holden (my favorite actor), she nurtured his early career and pushed for him when he was going to be fired from his first important film role in GOLDEN BOY. I have a feeling she did this too with Wagner, but I could be wrong. Again, not putting Wagner down, I feel there is nothing wrong with being bisexual and have no problem with this.
-
I know something of Wagner's private life and I don't want to be gossipy, but I find it hard to believe of his so-called affair with Stanywck, but then again you never know. I don't want to slam him. I met Wagner (autographing hunting) and he has always been very nice. I know Wagner was taken in hand by such people as Stanwyck as well as Clifton Webb when Wagner came to Hollywood.

There is no news from FOX re their 30s catalogue. However, Region 2 (Europe) will release a 6 disc Shirley Temple set. I have no info as to these films being restored for Europe. The only 30s film I heard about being restored is CALVALCADE. Hopefully, FOX will get on the ball and eventually release some of their earlier films.

FOX has finally announced some film titles for next year in their STUDIO CLASSICS series. PINKY is set for release on January 11, to be followed by such titles as A LETTER TO THREE WIVES and LIFEBOAT. Also, the FOX FILM NOIR CLASSIC is coming with such titles as LAURA, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN and CALLING NORTHSIDE 777. I am personally looking forward to all of these titles.

I enter TCM contests religiously every month and I have yet to win anything. But there must be hundreds and hundred of people who enter the contests each time making ones chances very slim.
-
I've only seen THE BLUE VEIL which stars Jane Wyman, Natalie Wood and Joan Blondell once on television many years ago. Its seems to be one of those films that have completely disappeared. Can't help with the Leslie ANn Warren film.

My guess is the classics don't sell as well (with the exception of say GWTW, CITIZEN KANE, SINGIN IN THE RAIN) as the newer films, that's why WB as well as Universal is putting out these bargain priced boxed sets.

richardyn4me, FALLEN ANGEL is available on DVD but only overseas. Their DVD Region 2 can't be played on our Region 1. Hopefuly, ANGEL will be released as a part of FOX's new Film Noir series in 2005.
My take on Faye leaving Angel, she was disgruntled over the editing but she probably used this as an excuse to leave films and wanted out of her contract. Zanuck begged her to come back. Her fan mail was tremendous. He offered her roles in THE RAZOR'S EDGE and A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. These were terrific roles in terrific film, but she still refused. I think Faye was just a bit tired of Hollywood.
