This is the only MGM film to have no director credit. Supposedly directed by George Cukor, he had his name removed after the film was badly edited. The only reason for seeing DESIRE ME is if you are a fan of Greer Garson. I wouldn't stay up late for this film, I would tape it.

In 2005 FOX is set to release what I heard is an expanded version of STATE FAIR. I hope by expanded they mean to include the rare 1933 version directed by Henry King which starred Will Rogers and Janet Gaynor. The third remake in 1962 with Alice Faye is quite inferior, but it would be nice to have all three versions on one DVD.

This film was originally released and co-produced by RKO with director Leo McCarey's company Rainbow. That could explain the black bar at the bottom. Republic eventually acquired the distribution rights.

tmsenzig, both ROYAL WEDDING and TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY were issued on Laser by MGM. I've seen the technicolor prints on the aforementioned films and they are pretty lousy (especially CLOUDS). I would wait until legit versions made from original transfers by WB are issued. I would save my money on these PD musicals.

Boy, I must have some mental block. I keep forgetting to put the s after g GANGSTERS!!!!
-
I made two errors in my entry. First, obviously I misspelled Gangters, second there apparentely are 6 titles in this set. Also included is THE ROARING 20s. The set will sell for $68.92 which is a big bargain. Individual titles sell for $19.97. I guess the reason for having these films is each print will most likely be in pristine condition for the first time and the extras (not yet announced) that will probably be included

pgm80s, PUBLIC ENEMY was censored by the Code for reissue, and WB found the 35mm elements of the complete film in Britain now making the print more complete. At this point I don't know how much footage was restored.

WB is releasing a 5 DVD set in January 2005 entitled WARNER BROS. GANGSTER COLLECTION. The set includes WHITE HEAT, PUBLIC ENEMY, THE PETRIFIED FOREST, LITTLE CAESAR and ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES. I am looking forward to seeing the uncut/uncensored PUBLIC ENEMY.

I rarely buy PD films, but the 99 cents stores in Los Angeles continues to bring in more titles. They are packaged in an open-up paper sleeve. The new ones have fairly nice covers. No extras, however. For 99 cents I figured I can't go wrong. I picked up two from the 1950s:
BENEATH THE 12 MILE REEF. Essentially a 'B' film from FOX to introduce their new CinemaScope process. Its letterboxed on this DVD. The print is pretty clean, but the color is on the soft side, not bad though. I bought this one mainly for the gorgeous Bernard Herrmann score. When D.F. Zanuck heard the score he was very impressed and thought Herrmann's music gave the film an added dimension it did not have before. This print sells elsewhere for much more money on other DVD companies.
SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO. I was hoping this print would be better than the prior one I had bought. Its a might better, but not much. It contains many scratches, and the color at times is very muddy and so dark you could hardly see the images, mainly in the scenes supposedly filmed in Africa. The print seems to get a bit better half way through the film. Again, I bought this for the haunting and gorgeous score by Herrmann. His "Theme for Cynthia" and "Memory Waltz" written for the segment with Ava Gardner is some of the best he has ever written. In fact Herrmann put together a suite containing these two themes. This film cries for a restoration and I wish FOX would reclaim this PD and remaster the film.

George Feltenstein did mention Astaire & Rogers for 2005, also more Film Noir. Go to Digitalbits.com for the entire interview. I had occasion to meet Mr. Feltenstein and talk to him over the phone some time ago. Not only is he nice, but he's also a big film buff.

venerados, in 1928 there was BEST PICTURE (WINGS) and UNIQUE AND ARTISTIC PICTURE (SUNRISE). The other categories according to Osborne are Actor, Actress, Direction, Writing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Engineering Effects and Special Awards. There are no other categories listed.

Just read an advanced review of the upcoming special 4 disc DVD of GWTW and it sound quite exciting. The review of the film which was highly praised talks about the color print which was done in WB new ultra resolution process, making the technicolor print practically jump off the screen such as in the WB release of ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD.
Among the many extra features included is the 38 minute Melanie Remembers: Reflections by Olivia DeHavilland. This is Ms. De Havilland's personal experiences with making this classic. I am really looking forward to this feature and adding this wonderful new DVD to my collection.

In Robert Osborne's book on the Oscars it clearly states BROADWAY MELODY as "Best Picture". There was never a title "Best Production". Apparently Osborne was somehow forgetful and ignored the earlier film. Something unusual for him to do, but I guess everyone is entitled to a mistake.

THE NIGHT STALKER and THE NIGHT STRANGER. Both TV movies star Darren McGavin and were recently released on DVD by MGM. Although shot in the 70s, both films are pretty creepy and still scary!

oops,in my comments I should have said January 8, 2005.

On January 8, 2004 Paramount is set to release the 1952 William Wyler film CARRIE which stars Jennifer Jones, Lawrence Olivier and Miriam Hopkins. Also, being released on that date is the screen version of THE MATCHMAKER, which later became the basis for the big musical HELLO DOLLY. This 1958 film stars Shirley Booth as Dolly Levi, with Shirley MacLaine and Anthony Perkins. Both films rarely play TV anymore.

I find this topic to be quite silly, since I feel my favorites never went away to begin with. The classic stars are always there on the big screen and available to see any time in one's favorite movies whether its on TCM or in DVD's I have purchased.

George Feltenstein, V.P. at Warner Video in connection with the recent release of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT box set did on online chat about DVD's in the works and upcoming from WB. He stressed that the studio is looking for only the best elements when releasing their DVDs and that so many films are in the works for restoration and release over the next few years.
Feltenstein mentions that they found uncensored footage in England of Cagney's PUBLIC ENEMY and WB will be releasing for the first time the uncut version in a pristine print. They also found the original camera negative, thought lost, of DAVID COPPERFIELD. The prints circulating for the latter are fairly poor. The studio is also preparing an 80th anniversary edition of King Vidor's THE BIG PARADE. They also have plans to release many more silent films. He promised more film releases of Crawford and Davis, plus Garbo.
Also coming are the films of Errol Flynn including the documentary ADVENTURES OF ERROL FLYNN with the participation of Olivia de Havilland, Patrice Wymore, Flynn's widow, and others. More THIN MAN titles are promised and two cult films A FACE IN THE CROWD and THE LOVED ONE are upcoming.
WB is working on restoration of THE JAZZ SINGER and if that sells well GO INTO YOUR DANCE will follow since they found a pristine print of the latter.
All in all this is my favorite studio of classic films and the next year or so looks pretty exciting for film buffs.

I'm not sure about Anita Page's participation in the release of BROADWAY MELODY OF 1929, but the DVD which is supposedly to be released around Oscar time will include a half dozen rare Metro Movietime Revue shorts. EASTER PARADE will be released in a 2 disc ultra resolution print (like Singin' in the Rain) and will include the American Masters PBS special Judy Garland: By Myself.
-
TCM has a new documentary on Errol Flynn which is called ADVENTURES OF ERROL FLYNN and its to be included on a new box set of Flynn films coming next year. I assume TCM will premiere this documentary sometime next year on their cable station. The exciting this about this special is the participation of Olivia de Havilland.

As a movie vehicle I don't think BRIGADOON will ever happen, especially considering today's audiences. But I can see it as a TV special like the others, e.g. MUSIC MAN, GYPSY. Actually BRIDGADOON was done for TV before with so-so results. Robert Goulet starred. On Broadway, BRIGADOON was strictly a singer's vehicle with obviously some dances. When Gene Kelly was cast it was switched to an all dance vehicle and several of the numbers were dropped. Another remade would obviously follow the B'way show, not the movie. I do however, think BRIGADOON seems better today than when first released in 1954.

silentfan77, I read about LAURA back in October on one of the websites, however an official date from FOX has not been announced as yet. The website had mentioned 4 noir titles. We should know more as we approach the early part of 2005. I will post any further info I hear. Haven't heard anything about the gangster box set. I have heard of a Martin & Lewis box set (16 films). I am only interested in a few of their films like LIVING IT UP with Janet Leigh and ARTISTS AND MODELS with Shirley MacLaine.

FOX is supposed to start their Film Noir classics beginning in March with LAURA. Like the Studio Classics one a month is supposed to be released. I heard initially there would be four releases in March including CALLING NORTHSIDE 777. Hopefully LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN will be part of the Noir package coming next year. I think FOX picked ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND since the laser was a pretty terrific print. LETTER TO THREE WIVES needs restoration, but I am sure its coming. Much of Mankiewicz has been released and it is an Oscar winner, which is in its favor. Grable should be coming in a box set. But when? Hopefully, in 2005. My personal pick is WITH A SONG IN MY HEART.

I just bought a Fay Wray double feature of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME and VAMPIRE BAT. I'm sorry to say the print of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME was pretty horrible. The soundtrack was scratchy and the print was very blurry and looked like it was duped from second or third generation prints. I guess there are several different public domain prints circulating. My DVD lists for $10.00. Fortunately I only paid 99 cents for it, so I don't feel too bad. I've bought PD's from this company (Triton) before and their quality has been pretty good. VAMPIRE BAT is pretty awful too. The prints were so bad I couldn't even bring myself to watch the entire films.
