In addition to Betty Grable, I think Alice Faye is very deserving of a box set. I believe FOX CLASSICS is due to release IN OLD CHICAGO. I would like to see a good print of Grable's LADY IN ERMINE and THE SHOCKING MISS PILGRIM.

MGM released SUNNY on laser disc back in the 90s (which I own) so maybe there could be a chance for the film to come out on DVD in the near future.

I bought the RETURN ENGAGEMENT book on its first release. Living in Hollywood in the 1990s I decided to see if I could get as many actresses who posed for pictures in this book to sign it. I know someone who got every actress to sign when the book came out at a special party. I was very lucky I got such actresses as Sylvia Sidney, Dorothy Lamour, the beautiful Evelyn Venable who was quite funny, she wanted to put a mustache on her recent photo which she didn't like. Others who signed include Luise Rainer, Margaret O'Brien, Jane Withers, Claire Trevor, Iris Adrian (I was invited over to her house), Jane Russell, Anne Jeffreys, June Haver, Ann Miller, Viginia Mayo, Cyd Charisse, Frances Dee, Ginger Rogers, Maureen O'Sullivan, Alexis Smith, Mary Brian (very rare, only seen her once), Ruby Keeler, Fay Wray, Dorothy McGuire, Martha Scott, Anna Lee, Marsha Hunt, Teresa Wright and Loretta Young. There were so many actresses either unavailable or by the time I was getting signatures deceased. I always had hopes of adding Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland to sign the book, but unfortunately this will probably never be although Fontaine is great for signing in the mail but I would not send the book since I could lose it. I also missed Vera Ralston. I had totally forgotten about this book until I read moviejoe's comments. I did have a lot of fun getting the book signed and something I will never forget!

I think the Darnell-Douglas segment is the best in LETTER TO THREE WIVES. The duo were reunited in the very funny EVERYBODY DOES IT. This is the second time Crain worked for Mankiewicz. The first being PEOPLE WILL TALK opposite Cary Grant. The studio wanted Crain for the part of Eve in ALL ABOUT EVE, but the director nixed it in favor of Anne Baxter. Gilcrest had a long career. She was so memorable as the maid in AUNTIE MAME as well as many other films, mostly for MGM.

If I'm not mistaken CINDERELLA on DVD will be released in the fall, although I am not quite sure of this. Looks like Disney is releasing two classics a year!
-
It's always unfortunate when the Academy fails to remember so many people. I just wonder who puts this things together, or are they just ignorant! Jan Sterling was even a former Oscar nominee. As for this year's OSCAR show I found it to be deadly dull. No surprises whatsoever. I think its about time Martin Scorcese was honored, he has been nominated so many times and the director has done so much for the preservation of film.

The GOLDWYN films including DEAD END will be released on March 8. As for Digitalbits, from time to time they get behind in their updates, but the last update was on February 25! I am not sure what is going on with this website.
When last heard, KING KONG (1933) was set to be released as a 2 disc special edition in November 2005.

I believe you just have to register to participate in discussions.

I found the Lucy film of MAME quite awful, ditto FOREVER DARLING. That duo I have no interest in buying. However, I would like to see several of the others released and I would add TOO MANY GIRLS, Lucy's best at RKO.

The Home Theater Forum will be hosting a live online chat with staffers from Warner Home Video on Monday, March 14th. Digitalbits.com will have a complete transcript of the chat the next morning. This is a chance to find out what is up and coming from WB and make suggestions to the WB people.

I thought of five classic films that could fit perfectly into a WB DVD box set that might be called: CLASSIC FILMS FROM CLASSIC BOOKS: ROMEO AND JULIET, DAVID COPPERFIELD, THE GOOD EARTH, ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1939) and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Also, I would like to see a double feature of both versions BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET. Is anyone out there from WB listening? Any ideas for other possible sets?

Disney always finds a great deal of info on their films to fill two discs. BTW coming next is CINDERELLA!

I made my comments just before I found out Paramount will release TEACHERS PET on DVD April 19, about the time WB releases their Doris Day collection. Incidently, both PAJAMA GAME and CALAMITY JANE have new art work for their reissue DVD release.
-
This is one of Day's best films and she works well with Gable. A laser disc was released so one hopes a DVD is forthcoming although there haven't been any announcements as yet.

According to the website Digitalbits and other sources, Disney is set to release SONG OF THE SOUTH next year. The website points out this is not an official confirmation.

As a child I used to watch both CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE and the CAT PEOPLE over and over again on TV and both films were quite frightening to me. About a dozen years ago I wrote a fan letter to Simon in Paris and she graciously signed several pictures for me. I always feel that as long as we have film a favorite star is never quite gone from us.

WB will be releasing three classics films in special editions this fall: BEN HUR (9/05): This Oscar winning film will be released in a 4 disc set much like the recent GWTW. Included will be the 1925 silent version of the film, plus several new features not on the current DVD release. I assume this one will be a new remastering. The aspect ratio of the current release is quite small for TV screens. THE WIZARD OF OZ (10/05): This one will be redone in WB new Ultra Resolution process on a two-disc set with several new features not on the current DVD release. KING KONG(11/05): Another 2 disc set with a promised beautiful remastering of the 1933 film. Included will be a documentary on the making of this classic among other features.

Ann Sheridan was so talented I thought she could have made it as a Broadway musical star after her film career was over, much like Alexis Smith and Angela Lansbury. I think Sheridan was extremely versatile being adept in comedies, dramas as well as musicals.

FOX is again dipping into their catalogue for May release of two of the best films of 1946: ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM which stars Irene Dunne, Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell and THE RAZOR'S EDGE which stars Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Anne Baxter and Clifton Webb. I personally have been waiting and anticipating these titles for sometime now.

FOX has announced several classic western titles for release on May 24. They include John Ford's DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK with Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda and the very funny Edna Mae Oliver. This one has gorgeous color and has been a fav or mine since watching it many times on TV as a kid. Another color western BUFFALO BILL with Joel McCrea, Linda Darnell and Maureen O'Hara and IN OLD ARIZONA with Warner Baxter as the Cisco Kid, probably the first talking western film. I can't remember if the latter has ever been televised. 2005 is shaping up to be a banner year for classic film collectors.

This is a terrific film that rarely plays TV. It has a great amount of standards sung by Peggy Lee and two by the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald. I was never a fan of Jack Webb, but I like this film very much. This one deserves a DVD release. I own the laser disc which I am holding onto since this film is one of my favorites.

feaito, Digitalbits.com announced it today along with a Marlon Brando box set of films which didn't excite me at all. Also, I am quite disappointed that Universal to date has not released the second box set of Durbin films that was released in Europe. BTW I thought of you when I read the Cooper announcement today, since I know you like 1930s films.
-
In a followup to my announcement of Cooper films, the set will be released on May 31 and list for $26.99. Knowing Universal there will be little in the way of extras unlike WB, but just to have these rare titles released at all is a treat in itself.

Universal is dipping into their Paramount library of films and will release a 5 film box set of rare 1930's Gary Cooper films in May. This will be a two disc set so the price should be right. The films are Lubitsch's DESIGN FOR LIVING co-starring Fredric March and Miriam Hopkins, PETER IBBETSON (a film I have never seen) which co-stars the beautiful Ann Harding, THE GENERAL DIED AT DAWN with another favorite Madeline Carroll, BEAU GESTE and THE LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER. This is a terrific set and to me a must have! One only hopes this is the start of Universal releases from the 1930's Paramount library.

deborahwakid11, I was able to get all these autographs by going to different events in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. It took a few years to obtain them. There was a big party when the book came and and I think all these or maybe most of these ladies attended. Its wasn't easy getting Mary Brian. At first for some reason, she really did not want to sign, but I talked her into it. The only actress whose house I went to was Iris Adrian. She's was just as funny in person as she was in the movies. It sad that so many of these ladies are now deceased. I would love to have had Mary Astor and Ina Claire's autographs.
