Meg Ryan, Cate Blanchett to re-do "The Women"
edgedrv replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
Everyone forgets MGM remade THE WOMEN in 1956 as the musical THE OPPOSITE SEX with June Allyson in the Shearer role, Joan Collins as Crystal, Dolores Gray as Sylvia and a good supporting cast consisting of the wonderful Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell and Agnes Moorehead. The film, although it had its moments (to me Sheridan came off the best) was a pale remake of the 1939 film. I think times have changed and women have changed and no matter who stars in this film, I just think this story line won't hold up with today's audiences. -
On February 1, 2005 Universal is set to release Preston Sturges' 1942 wacky comedy THE PALM BEACH STORY which stars Claudette Colbert, the always underrated Joel McCrea and Mary Astor. This is a welcome release, although for some reason Universal is slow to dig into the Paramount pre-48 library which they own, for the many gems that have yet to come out on DVD.

richardyn4me, FALLEN ANGEL is available on DVD but only overseas. Their DVD Region 2 can't be played on our Region 1. Hopefuly, ANGEL will be released as a part of FOX's new Film Noir series in 2005. My take on Faye leaving Angel, she was disgruntled over the editing but she probably used this as an excuse to leave films and wanted out of her contract. Zanuck begged her to come back. Her fan mail was tremendous. He offered her roles in THE RAZOR'S EDGE and A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. These were terrific roles in terrific film, but she still refused. I think Faye was just a bit tired of Hollywood.

Two more titles I would love to see FOX release in 2005 star Tyrone Power -- THE RAZOR'S EDGE and NIGHTMARE ALLEY. Both are neglected classics.

Fox will release the long awaited and wonderful A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN on February 22. I am not sure whether this will be part of the Classic Studio Collection or not. This is the last of three titles announced that I really wanted. The others are PINKY and LETTER TO THREE WIVES. TREE really needed restoration so I am anxious to see what this print will look like.

RIDE VAQUERO! is an OK western. This one is worth seeing only for its cast of three stars Keel, Gardner and Taylor. CALLAWAY WENT THATAWAY is a mild spoof with Keel impersonating a TV cowboy. It co-stars favorite Dorothy McGuire who I feel is wasted. KISMET is a visually stunning filming of the B'way musical. Director Vincente Minnelli does his best, but this 1955 musical come off as slow moving and dull. Its a film Minnelli did not want to make. KISMET is worth seeing only for the the lovely music which is beautifully sung by stars Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Vic Damone and the wonderful Dolores Gray. MGM did not always do the best for Keel. Fortunately, in between the duds he made a few classics for the studio.

Paramount has announced a February release date for Vincente Minnelli's last film musical ON A CLEAR DAY. Although visually stunning in flashback this 1970 musical was a disappointment. The film suffered by studio tampering in its final edit and by miscasting leading man Yves Montand opposite Barbra Streisand One would love to see the unedited version, but knowing Paramount it will probably be a bare bones release. Still this is better than no release at all.

I enter TCM contests religiously every month and I have yet to win anything. But there must be hundreds and hundred of people who enter the contests each time making ones chances very slim.

I've only seen THE BLUE VEIL which stars Jane Wyman, Natalie Wood and Joan Blondell once on television many years ago. Its seems to be one of those films that have completely disappeared. Can't help with the Leslie ANn Warren film.

This is the only MGM film to have no director credit. Supposedly directed by George Cukor, he had his name removed after the film was badly edited. The only reason for seeing DESIRE ME is if you are a fan of Greer Garson. I wouldn't stay up late for this film, I would tape it.

In 2005 FOX is set to release what I heard is an expanded version of STATE FAIR. I hope by expanded they mean to include the rare 1933 version directed by Henry King which starred Will Rogers and Janet Gaynor. The third remake in 1962 with Alice Faye is quite inferior, but it would be nice to have all three versions on one DVD.

This film was originally released and co-produced by RKO with director Leo McCarey's company Rainbow. That could explain the black bar at the bottom. Republic eventually acquired the distribution rights.

venerados, in 1928 there was BEST PICTURE (WINGS) and UNIQUE AND ARTISTIC PICTURE (SUNRISE). The other categories according to Osborne are Actor, Actress, Direction, Writing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Engineering Effects and Special Awards. There are no other categories listed.
-
In Robert Osborne's book on the Oscars it clearly states BROADWAY MELODY as "Best Picture". There was never a title "Best Production". Apparently Osborne was somehow forgetful and ignored the earlier film. Something unusual for him to do, but I guess everyone is entitled to a mistake.

THE NIGHT STALKER and THE NIGHT STRANGER. Both TV movies star Darren McGavin and were recently released on DVD by MGM. Although shot in the 70s, both films are pretty creepy and still scary!

oops,in my comments I should have said January 8, 2005.

On January 8, 2004 Paramount is set to release the 1952 William Wyler film CARRIE which stars Jennifer Jones, Lawrence Olivier and Miriam Hopkins. Also, being released on that date is the screen version of THE MATCHMAKER, which later became the basis for the big musical HELLO DOLLY. This 1958 film stars Shirley Booth as Dolly Levi, with Shirley MacLaine and Anthony Perkins. Both films rarely play TV anymore.
-
I find this topic to be quite silly, since I feel my favorites never went away to begin with. The classic stars are always there on the big screen and available to see any time in one's favorite movies whether its on TCM or in DVD's I have purchased.

TCM has a new documentary on Errol Flynn which is called ADVENTURES OF ERROL FLYNN and its to be included on a new box set of Flynn films coming next year. I assume TCM will premiere this documentary sometime next year on their cable station. The exciting this about this special is the participation of Olivia de Havilland.

Clooney, Nick that it, is running for Congress. I guess his interests are in politics at present

Oddly enough Gardner became a blonde for a while. With her coloring it did not really work. However, when Turner went brunette in such films as FLAME AND THE FLESH and BETRAYED, it did work. No one mentioned both gals were married to Artie Shaw at different times. Shaw said some unkind things about Turner's intellect and Gardner wouldn't put up with Shaw's nonsense. For some reason he tried to educate all the women he was involved with.
