  1. therealfuster, thanx for the info. I remember seeing WHERE'S CHARLIE on TV years ago and then it just vanished off TV. I thought it might be legal rights. Its seems silly Mrs. Loesser not wanting to make the film available on video, everybody loses this way. Maybe she just hated the filmed version.
  2. moviejoe79, there were rumors that FOX intended releasing CALVALCADE on DVD soon. They supposedly are working on the restoration, That it is an Oscar winner for best picture probably has something to do with its pending release. Incidently in TV Guide I notice FMC is running the rare DELICIOUS with Janet Gaynor and Charlie Farrell and HELLO FRISCO HELLO with Alice Faye next week! It would be great if TCM could lease all the early FOX films that never play TV anymore or haven't been in circulation at all.
  3. tcmprogrammer, Is this 1952 screen version of the B'way play in the Turner library? It's been off TV for years. The film seems to have vanished. Ray Bolger recreated his role from the stage. Could there be some legal rights about WHERE'S CHARLIE being off TV?
  4. On the recent DVD release of ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND they included a featurette of the London premiere of this film. At that premiere the host announced one of the stars attending and coming up to the mike now is George Sanders (pronounced "Sand"). So its seems both America and Britain pronounced the name the same way.
  5. bansi4, the lady seems to be interested in money alone and she has to have her name on everything released today that is associated with Astaire at MGM. She says she is protecting the Astaire name and like you said why the commercial!
  6. bunderw170, I agree with the lookalike appearance of Charisse and Gardner. This was very, very apparent in the early 50's especially the way Charisse was photographed. Oddly enough I have never seen pictures of Charisse's son from her first marriage. I guess she kept her private life, private. BTW I met Miller and Charisse many times during my autographed collecting. Both are very nice. Miller was more outgoing very much like Janet Leigh. People think Charisse is aloof, but I blame this on what I am sure is basic shyness. Tony Martin incredibly is still active in showbiz and looks pretty good for age 90.
  7. I've seen the movie and am pretty sure that is Dore Schary. Also, he was supposed to appear as himself on the classic I LOVE LUCY episode when the Ricardos visited Hollywood, but for some reason he backed out and Philip Ober (Vivian Vance husband) played him.
  8. The one I regret not writing to was Ava Gardner who by that time was living in Europe. I heard she did sign autographs by mail Also, there are several I did write to in the early 90s and then shortly after they passed away, such as my all time favorites Greer Garson, Irene Dunne and Eve Arden. I could kick myself for waiting just a bit too long.
  9. About ten years ago I met Liz Scott in person. She looked pretty good, very, very tanned. Friends used to see her grocery shopping in West Hollywood. Also, about that time I went to an Ann Blyth concert. She looked terrific and her singing voice was still great. Blyth always had beautiful skin. Of course ten years is a lot of time to pass. Alot can change in those years. Would love to see Ms. Blyth interviewed by Robert Osborne.
  10. musclephoto2, like you I could only afford to see a select few of the 3D films at the Egyptain, but it was a lot of fun. I know some people saw them all. I didn't have the time nor the money. There was some talk there were plans for a 2nd mini 3D festival of films that weren't shown the first time.
  11. tmsenzig, all these titles were originally released on laser discs, which I have. I'm sure many are coming or in the works for DVD. WB can do just so much restoration at one time. Apparently they are working on the big ones first: THE BAND WAGON, BRIGADOON, AMERICAN IN PARIS. And as I stated before one Minnelli title is glaringly missing: GIGI. This one has been released before on DVD but its long overdue for a special edition. But when??? It would be nice for an Astaire box set of YOLANDA AND THE THIEF, BELLE OF NEW YORK, THREE LITTLE WORDS and ROYAL WEDDING. These are all good in their way, but not top notch titles and probably would sell better in a box set.
  12. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY is a rare Deanna Durbin film which hasn't been on TV in years. Now that TCM has Universal films, would hope that this one would air. I would like to see this one on DVD. A film noir which is a very unusal for both Durbin and Gene Kelly.
  13. I believe you are talking about NEVER SAY GOODBYE which starred Rock Hudson and Cornell Borchers released in 1955.
  14. TCM needs to license more of the WB films from the early 50s. No classics but some real goodies including STORM WARNING with Doris Day and Ginger Rogers, CRIME WAVE, an exciting film noir with Gene Nelson and Phyllis Kirk, THE GLASS MENAGERIE with Jane Wyman and Kirk Douglas, COME FILL THE CUP with James Cagney, SO BIG with Jane Wyman and I could go on and on. Where are these films?
  15. Unfortunately, I too have to agree with these comments. I find myself watching less and less of TCM since too many of the films are repeated over and over again. Many of these films I already own on DVD. I realize this is a 24-hour non stop movie station without commercials but I am hoping the station will be adding many more films to the library and do a better mix next year. Would love to to the entire FOX library of classics go over to TCM!
  16. nickdimeo, Yes prints of the 3D versions of DIAL M FOR MURDER and HOUSE OF WAX still exist. Hollywood had a 3D festival earlier this year and they included the two above as well as such films as KISS ME KATE, CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER, THE FRENCH LINE, MISS SADIE THOMPSON, and SECOND CHANCE.
  17. Let's face it, how many movies released today are worth seeing more than once. Pictures like ALL ABOUT EVE, AFRICAN QUEEN, CASABLANCA, THE GODFATHER, ANNIE HALL, SINGIN IN THE RAIN, THE BAND WAGON can be enjoyed over and over again. I can go into these films and watch small segments of these classics which I definitely can't do with today's films. I can't think of one film released this year that I would want to add to my DVD collection. I might want to rent, but never to buy!
  18. The 99 cents store in LA is selling dozens of PD films in paper sleeves for 99 cents. One of the DVD's I purchased was McClintock. I know this one is not PD. But the happy surprise was this DVD is letterboxed. I think this is the film's first release in that format. Its pretty amazing a budget company would release a film in this format, but who's complaining!
  19. They are supposedly coming in 2005 along with several Harlow films.
  20. Marge and Gower Champion finished their movie career with JUPITER'S DARLING which was Esther Williams last starring vehicle for MGM. A very offbeat film but a total flop. The duo then co-starred with Betty Grable in her last vehicle at Columbia called THREE FOR THE SHOW. A very silly movie with some great dance production numbers by Jack Cole. Later Marge played a small part in the Burt Lancaster vehicle THE SWIMMER. These days Marge Champion is out and about. I think she lives in NYC and is very good at signing autographs through the mail as well as in person when she comes to Los Angeles. She even sent me a recent photo!
  21. Shirley MacLaine is great in person. Through the mail I don't know whether her signature is authentic. I wrote Liz Taylor and all I got was a picture with a printed signature. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. did autograph through the mail. Virginia Mayo I have gotten many times in person. I found Carroll Baker to be a bit secretive about giving out her address or receiving mail. I got her many times in person. Loretta did sign through the mail when I sent her, although I am not sure this was authentic. I did get her in person as well. Marie Windsor sent me an extra picture as well as responding with a note. Ditto Marsha Hunt. Very nice ladies. Some actresses like Anne Shirley took a long time to answer and only after I sent her many letters begging her to sign the photos I sent, then she responded. All in all I have been very lucky sending pictures through the mail. Unfortunately many of these stars are now gone and I only started collecting in the very early 90s. I'd say 98% of the old-time stars are good or were good about signing pictures.
  22. It seems like Ms. DeHavilland has been writing her autobiography for the past 10 years. I was lucky to get a typed letter with her signature stating she did not have time to sign. Now you will only get a typed letter from her secretary.
  23. CURTAIN CALL hasn't been telecast for years nor was it ever available on home video. This film as well as other Universal films from that era seems to have completely disappeared. Now that TCM is running many films from the Universal library hopefully more of these obscure Universal B&W films will show up on TV again.
  24. DeMille badly wanted Hepburn to play Nefeteri in his remake of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, but when he saw her in the costumes he decided Hepburn was all wrong for the role and replaced her with Anne Baxter a more voluptuous woman.
