October 27th marked the 49th anniversary of the initial release of Rebel Without A Cause. One more year and the film will reach its 50th anniversary. Years passed but the legacy of this brilliant film lingers on. Many teenage problems mentioned in the film, sadly, are still existing in our society today: parent-child relationships, guy-girl relationships, gay and bisexual issues, and teenage violence.
Although it is still uncertain whether the film would be re-released in theaters upon its 50th birthday, some performing arts organizations have already made plans for Rebel's Golden Anniversary. One of these many organizations is the Barely Balancing Artists Group of New York City. This group is currently producing a live stage production of Rebel Without A Cause. According to the group's website, the play would be opened on March 9th, 2005 in The American Theatre of Actors in New York City. The cast include: Allie Mulholland (as Jim Stark), Aubrey Plaza (as Judy Brown), Joshua Blaylock (as John 'Plato' Crawford), Brendan Bradley (as Buzz), and Joshua Coleman (as Goon). For fans living in NYC, this will be a great opportunity to see the Rebel story live on stage. For more info about the production, please check out: http://www.RebelWithoutACause.net. If you would like to make a donation to the group (it's a non-profit group by the way), you are welcome to do so by sending it to the address printed in the website.
That is what I recently wrote about in my Rebel site. I am not participating in the play but I think it is a really interesting idea to put the movie on stage. Sadly, I am living in L.A. so I have no way to see the play in person. Anyways, hey, check it out! It sounds like a pretty good producion.
