"Visiting Virginia" Day Festival
I would like to see a day of films dedicated to movies set in Virginia called, "Visiting Virginia." I enjoy these "daily themes" that TCM has been doing lately and always look for their thematic line-ups in "Now Playing." My primary interest is to view a film of which I?ve never seen before, simply called, ?Virginia,? Paramount?s own version of ?Gone With the Wind.? It starred Fred Mac Murray and Madeleine Carroll. I read that the film was shot on location near Charlottesville, Virginia amongst the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling hills, and beautiful fall foliage that Virginia offers. I?m always looking for this film to show up on television or be released on video or DVD, but it hasn?t happened. I would really enjoy the opportunity to see this rare film. Another must would be a viewing of one of my favorite Virginia set films, which also happens to be in my opinion, one of Frank Morgan?s best performances, ?The Vanishing Virginian.? To add to the ?Visiting Virginia? Day, I have included a list of other good films where the setting is Virginia, along with three shorts about the ?Old Dominion,? two of which are Travel Talks and could be used for the ?One Reel Wonders? segments. Some of these films have been on TCM before and others probably haven?t, especially the one called, ?The Death of Ocean View Park,? which may not qualify as a ?classic? but would be fun just the same:
Virginia (Paramount, 1941) Fred Mac Murray and Madeleine Carroll
The Vanishing Virginian (Warner Brothers, 1940) Frank Morgan, Kathryn Grayson
Brother Rat (Warner Brothers, 1938) Ronald Reagan, Priscilla Lane
The Howards of Virginia (Columbia, 1940) Cary Grant, Martha Scott
In This Our Life (Warner Brothers 1942) Betty Davis, Olivia De Havilland
Shenandoah (Universal, 1965) James Stewart, Doug McClure
Unconquered (Paramount, 1947) Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard
Undercurrent (MGM, 1946) Katherine Hepburn, Robert Taylor, Robert Mitchum
Without Love (MGM 1945) Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
The Death of Ocean View Park (ABC, 1979) Mare Winningham, Martin Landau
SHORTS:
Travel Talks: ?Cradle of a Nation? (MGM, 1947)
Travel Talks: ?Visiting Virginia? (MGM, 1947)
The Bill of Rights (Warner Brothers, 1939)
