I'm glad to see Emma Thompson mentioned. Talk about talent--an Oscar for acting AND one for screenwriting! "Sense and Sensibility" was the best adaptation of that story that I have seen--it had wit and charm. I have seen Ms. Thompson do drama and comedy and she does them both with exceptional skill--a lot of today's actresses would have trouble excelling in both genres. Her latest turn in "Angels in America" was excellent.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "legend" is. If it is someone who is glamorous, then perhaps Meryl Streep doesn't fit the bill. But if it is someone whose acting will stand the test of time, then she definitely qualifies. I don't know that modern stars are really all that "glamorous" anyway--at least not in the way that we think about stars like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. I also don't think of Katharine Hepburn as being particularly glamorous--but she is certainly a legend!

I've always considered Cate Blanchett to be a younger version of Meryl Streep, and I believe that she is well on her way to achieving the same level of greatness. She is a vastly underated actress. She was brilliant in "Veronica Guerin."

I remember seeing it on TV about 10 years ago. I haven't seen it on video or TV since then.

I agree that Kidman and Roberts are not legends. The only modern actress that I see fitting into that category is Meryl Streep. She is a consistently excellent actress with an impressive and varied body of work.

The film is "The Proud and Profane."

I hope I didn't miss this somewhere, but when will they be available for purchase and will it be through this site?

That would be "I Want To Hold Your Hand." I thought it was a great depiction of "Beatlemania" and a great comedy too!

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I'm afraid our cable company is just a little behind the times! "Libeled Lady" is one of my favorite films! I wish they would release it on DVD as I am wearing out my VHS! -
I'm glad to see that there are other folks out there who appreciate Leslie Howard! Stand In is a delightful film and Bogart's presence is an added bonus. I also love The Petrified Forest which also features them both.

Since I am new here, I thought this might be a good place to start! My favorite stars (in no particular order except for the first four): Charlie Chaplin, Leslie Howard, Robert Donat, Tyrone Power, Humphrey Bogart, Myrna Loy (especially her films with William Powell), Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Errol Flynn, Ronald Colman, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Buster Keaton I'm looking forward to participating in this forum--my cable company just added TCM and I'm SO glad they did!
