  1. 1) Following the boys into the headmasters office and the pan to the headmasters stern face imparts the feelings of dread. The shot pans back and forth between the headmaster and the boys. We are aware of the girl in the back but it isn't until she intentionally drops her purse that the camera pans into her close up and by her facial expressions do we see the ugly side of her however back to the boys they are still in a state trying to figure out what is going on. It was easy to be put in the shoes of the boys. 2) again Hitchcock uses the camera and needs to use little words to convey what is going on. As the saying goes actions speak louder than words. 3) From the first clip we watched to this film shows a graduation of technique. The detail, the panning back and forth of the head master, watching the ongoing expressions of the girl. In addition the body language of the boys. I also noticed when they panned to the girl the scene darkened. It appears that there is more of an improvement to detail.
  2. 1: Hitchcock begins the scene with upbeat lively people having a great time. He stays on that long enough for the viewer to be in that moment and to feel the moment and surroundings. 2: then we pan on the main male character. He is in another room talking with his people about another fight and becoming as famous as one of the other boxers. As we are now in the characters head we are listening half heartedly to his people and now watching his wife who is in the other room talking to a fella. This is where Hitchcock begins the montage where we are in his mind trying to figure out what to do. We are there with him in those moments now separated from the party. 3: The set is limited to two rooms. He pans out to get the living/party area. So we can see and get into that moment. He knows when to pan in and get stills of faces and shots such as the girl sitting down to drink from the bottle. We get close ups back and forth between the two gents with the added takes of his wife and her increasing closeness to the other man.
  3. 1: The Pleasure Palace begins with a happy setting. One of entertainment and frivolity. The Lodger opens with a woman screaming and the setting is in a darker backdrop. The similarities include the camera angles . In the beginning of the film they are placed to capture the essence of the film, enjoyment, entertainment to the darker seriousness of what was occurring. The camera angles, the setting along with the music sets our minds to take in the clips without needing words. 2: I believe as mentioned above I believe the positioning of the camera angles; the close up of the woman screaming, the witness acting hysterical. The. Add panning the crowd a famous thing that Hitchcock does in his movies which is where he usually inserts himself into the film. 3: the frame of the woman screaming. The close up gives us pause in our minds that we can hear it although there is no sound. As the witness woman talks again without saying a word the angles of the camera draw pictures in our mind to draw the conclusion as to what she is saying much as sign language and body language.
  4. The camera angles are signature Hitchcock. Without any words how he directs the camera tells the whole story.. As well it also reflects his humor, the gal with the curl. The second question. As above with his other films every cel tells the story. Number 3: I am not a real big silent film watcher because I don't want to have to try to read and watch the movie at the same time however this movie can be watched with limited words. Hitch was the master! I also think his varied background and eye for detail made his movies the greats they are.
