A Constant Goof in Movies Set in the Past is ...
johnm001 replied to Palmerin's topic in General Discussions
I find the 60s the worst offenders of this. Especially the women. No matter what the time period, the women have 60s hair and make-up. -
If YOU were guest programmer, your selections would be:

My choices would be: THE TAMARIND SEED - 1974 HOME SWEET HOMICIDE - 1946 ME, NATALIE - 1969 THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD - 1961 -
Of course. My comment was about the woman's emphatic "no", and bitterness about being told she really didn't know how he life would have been with children, since she didn't have them. A person who was comfortable with their decision, wouldn't be bitter about that conversation. Pensive, yes. Bitter, no.

I love THE UNTOUCHABLES, even if it does have dreary old Kevin Costner in it.

True. I guess I just like Muni better than Pacino. Pacino is such a ham, to me. As for mush-mouth Brando, meh.
-
I hate this film and Pacino in it. It's just so over-the-top that I find it annoying. I'm a pretty big De Palma fan (not so much Pacino), but this one is just unwatchable, to me. I do love De Palma/Pacino - CARLITO'S WAY, however.

There isn't a single second of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS I find boring. I've seen it at least 20 times.

Which says to me that she wishes she had children, but is in denial. Otherwise there is no explaining her bitterness.

Also, Robert Wise, Fred Zinneman, Stanley Kramer, etc., etc., etc.

Except, if they aren't compelled to watch the entire movie, then that says something about how they feel about it, doesn't it? I never walk out of a film, or turn it off. I always get to the end, even if I hate it; but, I don't think it's lazy of those who do. Actually, I think it's rather smart of them. I'm sort of OCD about it, which is the only reason I don't.

Great Movie Performances By Child Actors

It is interesting that no one mentioned her. I love her, even in her adult roles, but I suppose none of them would qualify as great. Good. Reliable. Entertaining. Fun. -

I agree with the selection of Martin Stephens in, not CHILDREN, but VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. Not sure why I didn't think of him for my list, as it is pretty much my favorite motion picture. -
Well, I'm a heterosexual male and I say, "Meh." So, you're happy he didn't make a motion picture that entertained people? That was my expectation, at least. I stayed awake and didn't walk out of the theater. I endured the whole bloody thing. Finally, why would you take any offense that people don't like a movie, in a thread for people who hate the movie????!

Without manipulative, a movie is pretty dull. -
Musicals that DESPERATELY need to be remade...

and it would flop. Of course, it would probably flop, either way. Look at JERSEY BOYS. Even the couple that were moderately successful in the past 20 years, were just that, moderately successful. Besides not being able to make a musical today (nobody knows how to keep a shot for longer than 3 seconds), people just don't have much interest in them. -

The aforementioned Dean Stockwell in pretty much anything Patty Duke in THE MIRACLE WORKER Peggy Ann Garner in A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN Patty McCormack in THE BAD SEED Haley Joel Osment in THE SIXTH SENSE -
I find almost nothing to like about Lean's films, past BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. And yes, I've seen them in their original road show presentations, the way they were meant to be seen. Repetitive music scores, with scene after scene just screaming for better editing (even in KWAI, just not as bad). Like a still photographer got his hands on a movie camera and wasn't exactly sure what to do with it. Pre-KWAI, when he still understood how to make pictures that MOVE, I quite like his work.

I detest the score, so not safe to assume.

NANETTE is a great musical that has never had a proper film version. -
"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" - on the Essentials tonight.

Other than THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, it's the only time I don't think Burton horribly overacts. I've seen him several times on stage and always really liked him. Not in films. I definitely think he should have won the Academy Award. I can't imagine what they were thinking?! -
Could TCM give "My Fair Lady" a rest for a while?

I was once on a film musicals board (until I realized how few film musicals I actually like), and was amazed at how many people said they liked the film version of ANNIE. I actually wanted to fall into a hole in the floor of embarassment from how horrible I found every single thing about it (other than the Annie). I felt ashamed to be sitting in a theater watching it. I started to quiz the people who liked it, and in every single case, they were children when they saw it. I then realized what a major impression film makes on a younster. I was an adult with my own children when the film was released. It is true that films I saw as a child, particularly during their original releases in a theater (like JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS) made an indelible impression on me, and even if someone points to the flaws, which I can appreciate today, it makes no difference on how I feel about them, or how they make me feel. The same holds true for films I disliked as a child (like MY FAIR LADY). No amount of discussion of its attributes (I find none), can make me think it is anything but a major lost opportunity. I feel exactly the same way about it today, as I did in January of 1965, when I first laid eyes on it, during its roadshow run at Philadelphia's Stanley Theatre. Films I've seen as an adult are completely different. I can see a film that I disliked as an adult, years later, and discover something I now like about it. Or, vice versa. Not quite as visceral as the childhood experience of film. -
Thanks. Yes, I'll stay away. But I'm glad someone did it, and wish they were more of these type documentaries on songwriters.

If you don't find JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS good, what do you find good? I think it's one of the best motion pictures ever made. I'm not bothered by how many times they show it, because it's not a film I've watched on broadcast television in years and years. I've owned it on almost every imaginable home media, video, laserdisc, dvd and Blu-ray. -
All those made-for-television movies are the true "lost films". We have to settle for inferior youtube videos, or dupes, if we can find them, at all. Would love to see quality releases of them. Hell, I'd be happy if the myriad channels that show old shows and movies would include them in their schedules. I really don't need another release of METROPOLIS. I want WOMEN IN CHAINS!!
